Avoid SMH Car Hire in South Africa (they have offices in Cape Town and Jo'berg). I recently hired with them and, after I returned the car, they took several thousand Rand of unauthorised charges from my bank account without notice for non-existent 'damage' to the car. The money they took was even over and above the damage excess set out in the hire agreement!
Also, take care if using Around About Cars in Cape Town because it seems that they sometimes refer customers to SMH. So although you start dealing with Around About Cars, you end up hiring the actual car from SMH.
i agree with they took my money about R10000 without even informing for a damage that resulted from their negligence. they could not even provde a report to back their claim. they just robbed me and thats all they do robbing people.
I've just had a similar experience. Unauthorised debit of my credit card for 'additional' costs. I'm still fighting it.
Vehicle was fine, but equipment (camp equipped 4 x 4) very poor. Leaking tents, no tent pegs, damaged zips on tent, dirty cutlery and crockery, leaking (and therefore useless) water tank, faulty locks on vehicle so couldn't leave it unattended anywhere etc.
Then to get additional charges taken from my account ..... !
Don't go near them.
