Shabby, High Mileage
I strongly recommend to stay away from Scotties Christchurch: Good price came with a hefty price tag for gas for me (16l / 100 km!) for a very old, small car.
Please note, I tried to contacted them directly, but no response, hence the warning here. (I left a note in the car with a list of all things broken, I wrote another e-mail to the Christchurch office. Then I wrote another two e-mails to the headquarters. All without reaction.)
Step by Step:
I picked up a gold Nissan Tiida on a Saturday morning in February. Car was pretty worn down and old like all cards on their lot that day. Short overview: Mileage over 150.000km, cuts in the seats and scratches all over. But I was assured the car had just passed official inspection. As I don't mind old cars, I went my way. After half a day I realized that the smell was permanent and the car moved to the left whenever I let the wheel go for a split second. Then the door seal came off. I called and went back to Christchurch the next day to pick up a replacement.
After much apologies I received another Nissan Tiida, with similar scratches, mileage over 150.000km and "optimizable" tires (btw their cars only speak Japanese, because they are direct imports). When I asked about the inferior condition of the cars, I was told "you booked a cheap car". I did not mention that cheap and small does not equal crappy and small, because the car seemed alright and I finally wanted to leave town. The woman assured me she test drove it herself.
Fast forward a few days. Found a few broken things, but nothing major. But after three days it occurred to me that the car might be using a lot of gas. Instead of the usual 8-9l I ended up with AN AVERAGE OF 16L/100km, as the car's information system indicated. My credit card statements should confirm this, I think. For a 2.000 km/10 day trip this equaled in roughly another 350-400NZD for gas. Thanks, Scotties.

We are currently upgrading our fleet but do tend to keep our cars longer and grade them differently as they age. We feel it is more environmentally friendly and more cost effective to do this. We are committed to the environment and so servicing for optimal running is important. Petrol is more expensive than some countries in New Zealand and also we use a metric system so maybe you were looking at cost rather than consumption We care about our staff and like them to be able to spend evenings with family and so use technology and self drop off close to airports after hours so the customer has a good experience and it is cost effective for them. We have 2 excellent mechanics in Christchurch. We suggest next time you come to New Zealand speak with one of our helpful team to get the best option for your needs. We try to respond to all calls and emails.

Hired a car from Scottie’s then came back after a couple of day and asked I could up grade to a van for one day and swap back they were so helpful and made the trip a great experience well done guys will be back and would recommend them to friends

Good Car For A Good Price
Pleasantly surprised by how well this rental went - good service at pick up and drop off, clean comfortable car (Toyota Estima) - despite its age - and had no issues mechanically during 2 wk+ rental. Vehicle was well spec’d (electric sliding doors, revolving mid seat, etc) and comfortably fit 7-8 people for 2-3 hr journies. Only blip was a sometimes faulty headlight which I’m sure Scotties will attend to.

We were met by a lovely young German lady, and she also came to pick us up within 5 mins of our initial call from the airport.
The Toyota RAV4 was high in KMS but then it was alot cheaper than other companies, but it went really well and it was a credit to Scotties as was the service from the young lady.
We would not hesitate to recommend them to others. IF you are not hung up on having the latest vehicles, and just want something that is reliable, cheap and affordable then Scotties is a great choice.
There are alot of choices but Scotties are definitely worth a look see.

Dated, But Well Worth It
We needed a minivan and the price at Auckland airport was outrageous. Scottie's is off-site, across from the Park and Fly location. They pick you up. We got a 2005 Toyota Previa with what appeared to be new upholstery. It was in great shape even though it had 151,000 (or was it 1,151,000?) on it. The vehicle came equipped with a tape deck and CD player but no modern conveniences. We put more than 3,000 kms on it in about three weeks and it ran like a charm.
The cost was about NZ$35 per day. Well worth it. The only drawback was that our departure was after 5 p.m., after their offices closed. We had to bring the car to a nearby Best Western, where the kind lady drove us to the airport, charging $15 in total. If you are not wary of vintage, I would highly recommend Scotties.

Quick Service On Late Booking
I booked at last minute , 1 1/2 hours before pickup, and still got good rate. Friendly helpful staff and car was fine. Just a bit confused with Insurance and ended up paying Expedia AND Scotties(low rate special at least).
Would book direct with this small company next time.
