What A Shame Shimano Has Discontinued The 5000b Gt
What a shame Shimano has discontinued the 5000B GTE series. It is a brilliant reel smooth sturdy and in its gunmetal finish looks the part. Couple this with the quality aluminium spools it is a reel that oozes quality. Looks alone do not make a good reel but I have to say in use the reel is faultless with so many features you would need a page to list them. The end result is a reel that is smooth, has plenty of power and has a baitrunner and rear drag system that is virtually micro sdjustable. The reel casts brilliantly no doubt helped by its aero wrap system. There are not too many of these reels about now however if you are lucky you may be able to pick a decent one up at one of the many auction houses. If you are even more lucky you may still come across the odd new one here and there. They still command high prices even second hand. As allways parts and spare spools are not a problem and are readily available. I would seriously consider having the reel serviced though if it is used. As I have said you may be lucky enough to get a good used one but from personal experience I would not part with mine.
This reel continues to give unblemished performance in to its third season of use. Super smooth and with lashings of power able to handle everything I throw at it. There are still a few to be found on auction sites but have been discontinued for some time. Shimano servicing is second to none though so even if your reel develops a fault it can be readily fixed. It will be a sad day if I ever part with my reel.
