Over the years we have rented dozens of cars at Spanish airports, many at Alicante for the past decade. Have tried most of them but natural try to get best value for money vs standards of service. Cheapest is certainly not always best, nor does a high price guarantee quality of service. Dear eurotraveller,

We thank you for your insights and feedback on your last rental with us.
Please note that in order to pick up a car it is compulsory to block a deposit on a valid credit card or purchase our additional coverage. Our staff will always inspect the cars after each use and will mark the damages on the check-out sheet, however, we always ask customers to double check this since the cars can receive damage during their stay in the parking lot. This way both parties are aware of the damage that the car has on it before departing. On return, if our agents find damages that were not marked, they proceed to investigate and if it's considered that it occurred during this rental period, the customer will be charged for it.
We always take photographic evidence and provide it to our customers and to the insurance company in case they need it.

I hope you understand and consider all this when making a reservation with any rental company.

“Be aware of hidden currency charges”

Rented car for week at Feurteventura Airport. Car was OK, it was cheap and I took out excess insurance to avoid their inflated excess insurance cost. I'm pretty savvy but admit that I was fleeced. You have to get the excess charged to your credit card - 1100 Euros. No problem, expected it and its refunded if theres no excess charges however I was in a hurry and failed to notice that they charged me in Sterling and applies a conversion rate of 1.0!!!! On the issue you described, please note that all of our basic procedures are stated on your confirmation voucher as well as on your contract. If you are noticing differences between the amount refunded and the one that you received it must be due to the currency exchange and the possible commissions your bank charge you for these transactions, as you may understand we cannot be liable of the exchange rate they are applying on this matter.

“Beware of upgrade offers”

We recently hired a car from Malaga airport. We were told we could upgrade the car we had booked, the cheapest, to a Ford Fiesta for 2 Euros per day extra. On the issue you described, please note that a vehicle upgrade does always cost an extra fee if you are changing from the original category you hired to a bigger one. The cost of it is always detailed on your contract at the top right of the sheet, where you can check the itemised price of all the services you hired.

“Okeish service but toooo slow and insistent!”

Got a car at Milano Bergamo airport and took sooo looong at the desk! Assistant there very polite but too insistent and painfully slow.....he kept me there for a good 40 minutes despite I had a prepaid voucher and all the necessary documentation. We're trying to improve our services and the opinion of clients is essential to do so.
On the issue you described, please note that you could always have asked to add our priority check in service at your arrival to our counters in order to avoid any extra time of queue. Bear in mind that our rentals are very concerned about giving all our customer the relevant information about their rental before giving them the car in order to avoid any future issue, for that reason the process could take a while sometimes.

On the other hand, you have to know that our policy contemplates the requirement to leave a deposit in order to pick the car and start using our services. However, we always offer additional cover (Super Relax Cover), because it already includes an excess and it exempts you of this requirement. If customers have third party coverage, they can request a refund from them in case of damages, but our additional coverage is always offered as an alternative to blocking a deposit on a credit card.

“Bit of a banger”

Longish wait as only one staff member and several customers in front had not booked in advance. Car was not washed and had many dents and scratches which worried us in case we missed any on our check. Car engine sounded a bit rough and after an hour or so warning lights came on for tyres and service. We checked tyre pressures, oil and water and all was ok but lights stayed on and were a worry. “Good service, but too long queue to pick up the car”

I have used ColdCar in Alicante several years now. I think the service is good when you finally get it and the cars have been fairly new. This time I could even choose the brand (VW, Citroen or Peugeot) :-) The extra fees I have got used to, but you have to pay attention when booking. The fuel and extra insurance is of course to expensive, but it is the total in the end that counts. However I will point out that the queue to pick up the car in Alicante Airport is far to long. I emailed Goldcar to ask where the refund of my fuel was, I recieved a reply which was took me by surprise, they said there was a small amount of sand on the floor and also in the cup holder. They said it needed a special clean so they would not be refunding my 30€ excess fuel. Vacuuming a small amount of sand is extra to the clean they give the car after I returned it? “Great Price, Car was shabby though”

We hired from Goldcar in Malta from 7th-14th March 2015. They were easy to find, the desk service in the airport was phenominally good, we were even greeted in the car park and shown to our vehicle and there was someone there to meet us on our return. We hired a car in Tenerief with Goldcar in December 2014. We first navigated our way through the hard insurance pitch (No thank you) I had to pay for a full tank of fuel £64:73 and was told any unused fuel would be refunded to my card. I took a photo of the instrument panel on returning the car which showed over well over 3/4 of a tank remaining and 117km travelled. Recently returned from fuerteventura. Staff were polite on arrival, didn't have to wait too long, they didn't speak excellent English but we survived! you keep saying to book direct with you but for the rental i was looking at 6-14 sept for a fiesta , through a broker with an additional driver it was €98.27 but direct with you it is €143 which is 43% dearer, this is not a very good way to encourage people to book direct.

“Fuel refund”

overall pretty good although they really do try and force sell the extra insurance even if you keep saying no! I used them at Malaga at Easter and had 7/8 of my fuel refunded to me with a couple of days of returning the car. However I also hired one on 5th June 2014 for a few days and still as at today (27/6) haven't had a fuel refund even though I handed it back 7/8 full! Rented for one week in April 2014. A short wait on pick-up but less than some other companies. Had to insist to get petrol and not diesel car. A few people were waiting at car drop-off but no problem for us. Just left the car, dropped the key in the box and went to check in for my flight. Quick tip, if you take the elevator from parking next to autos Lido to 2nd floor (departures) there is a mechanical belt that makes the long walk a little bit better.
