“Hard sell tactics ”

We’ve been going to Spain ( Malaga) for some twenty + years now and this awful service by the car hire companies sucks. Majority of them now use hard sell tactics to buy the extra insurance at the desk. On our last trip in August I booked my car via cartrawler( Ryanair on line) and knowing previous experiences I took out the extra insurance at roughly £40 ( as it’s usually £200 in Malaga airport) and had all the policy documents and vouchers with me. “Rude and unhelpful ”

I got a ticket and waited in line, at first very pleasant, when I didn't accept the Insurance, things changed. I have worldwide car rental insurance. I had used Goldcar previously and actually had no problems so on a return trip less then a week later I was disappointed that the whole experience was just awful! “Licence problem”

Arrived BHX airport UK,went to pick up car from interrent (goldcar) i had to wait 1hr for man to call DVLA to confirm i had held my licence for more than 5 years as i have changed it in Aril this year to the country i reside in. DVLA confirmed i had no endorsements and licence since 1991. Guy accepted endorsements over the phone but wanted a hard copy of UK licence which DVLA could not send. “Mistake of a couple hundred euros”

I booked with Goldcar because they had actually unbeatable fares in the Lisbon airport. I booked online an Economy classe car for 25 EUR for a week, what a bargain! When I arrived in the Lisbon airport I paid the deposit and off I went. When I came a week later the problems started. “Unauthorised charges”

I hired a car from Castellon airport, explained clearly "I do not require insurance waiver as I have my own" within two weeks of our return to the UK £177 was withdraw from my credit card. I have taken out a dispute with the bank but still waiting to hear. The same for their agent Carflexi who withdraw an extra £54 for the same hire. When I booked the hire car I declined their insurance because we have an annual excess insurance. We picked the car up in Bilboa and the attendants were very jovial and helpful. At no point did they mention the additional insurance. We returned the car and was told all was fine. When I received my credit card bill I noticed an extra £290 had been taken out. Firstly, the car was three or four levels from the bottom due to the secluded villas and high mountains where we always holiday. “Fuel charge ”

Hired a car with Goldcar in Malaga last week. Was charged 98 euros fuel charge for a Fiat 500, ( the tank holds 40 euros maximum ). Returned the car full and was told it would be refunded 24 hours to 3 days later. The reality is 6 days and still waiting. They have confirmed that the refund has been processed, but 6 days???? They must be earning a fortune in interest from all the fuel charges sitting in their bank account. Everything else was fine, but this has spoilt it for me and so hence… Read Full Review

“They will suprise you with costs you were not told about”

Although the car hire was fine from a car point of view and even the costs are reasonable, they do not tell you the true cost when you book online. Although many car hire companies have done this in the past, GoldCar continue to not tell you what the real cost will be. In a 3 day hire we were charged an extra 90 Euros for something I couldnt quite work out, yes insurance but not quite sure for what as I had paid the extra £60 for the full cover avoiding exesses but who knows? On the issue you described, please note that our policy contemplates the requirement to leave a deposit in order to pick the car and start using our services. However, we always offer additional cover (Super Relax Cover), because it already includes an excess and it exempts you of this requirement. This service is always offered as an alternative to blocking a deposit on a credit card.

I've used gold car before and been reasonably happy. I was glad to see they now have an office and keep cars at the actual airport. The value is great and was also happy to pay the extra fee for after hrs pickup. The people at the desk where very nice and spoke good English. On the issue you described, please note that provision number 6.2 of our General T&C establishes: “charge for 'special cleaning' for the costs incurred from an additional valeting service arising from the clearly inadequate state of the vehicle at the time of its return, with a maximum charge of €150.” This was stated on your contract as well. According to it, we expect our customers to valete the vehicle before returning if needed and in your case it was needed.

So we book through Ryanair to pick up a hire car from Madrid Airport to book and pay only to be informed after payment had been made that this company operate from a Hotel 15mins away .Our other family members who travelled before us booked through Ryanair before us but had been allocated a car from FireFox from the airport. I had to wait for an hour before being seen to pick up the car (apparently that was not as bad as others, one having to wait over 2 hours to pick his pre-booked car up) and was then told to go and find the car in the car park nearby and inspect it and come back if I found anything wrong with it. “insurance pressure from ACE, Gold rodium car rentals.”

I got the feeling that the salesman dealing with my car hire was on some kind of commission to sell excess car insurance cover. I paid £135 for the car for a week in Catania, Sicily. He then tried to aggressively sell me £150 of excess car cover. Basically they frighten you into thinking you will get financially penalised serious bucks if the car is even slightly scratched. Please note that our staff always recommend our clients to take additional insurance out for their own safe and tranquility on the road. But in no way they force our clients to get it. Customers are free to decide what they want to do, but they should be aware of what could happen if, unfortunately, the car has damages.

After reading your post, we understand that you booked a third party's coverage.
Therefore, I'd like to explain you how our coverage policy works. We always make the customer choose from two different options: you can purchase our additional coverage or you can leave a deposit in which you'll be liable of any damage made to the car, as our agent explained you at the counter.

We are aware that third parties offer customers their own coverage, as in your case, but it should be explained that this coverage is only applied when a charge is debited from the deposit left by the customer to the rent-a-car company - this is how the third party's coverage policy works. This information should be given by your broker.

That’s why our agent told you that we would charge you any damage made to the car if anything happens and we're not aware of the conditions of the third party's coverage refund.

That's why we'll always offer our additional coverage to the customer for their peace of mind because thanks to it, customer will be fully protected in case of an accident and we won't be liable if any damage is made to the car.

Please note that our basic coverage always contemplates an excess (please see our T&Cs). If customers have third party coverage, they can request a refund from them in case of damages. I rented a GoldCar car in Nice in Sept/Oct 2015 by prepaid agreement through HolidayAutos. I go frequently as I have a house there, but this was the first time with GoldCar. Unlike the other rental companies, their office is not in the airport... no warning until after booking! The car was dirty and marked, with Italian number plates, obviously had just come in and not prepared. Just got back from Nice, had lots of hassle including one lovely GoldCar employee shouting at me " if I loved my children upgrade my car to a bigger one." Nearly as terrible as " clean the car upon return, no bottles, no paper, no sand".

Please note that all information regarding the location of our offices (and shuttle services for the few that are not in the airport facilities) can be found our webpage, on the booking voucher as well as in our official YouTube channel.

Allow me to explain our Flex Fuel policy: customers pre-purchase a full tank and receive a refund for unused fuel, minus a handling and administration fee (the vehicle needs to be driven to be refueled and cannot be rented out in the meantime). With this plan customers benefit from our Quick Return System, they don't have to worry about refueling the vehicle close to the office before returning it or wait for the tank to be checked.
