Scotties Car Rental, New ZealandOur first Prius was dirty on collection and the girl who gave us the car did not explain how to start the car, which was very specific and we had issues starting it which caused us delays on a few occasions. This is involving an experience where I rented a car from Economy who subcontracted out to Scotties in Auckland New Zealand. I rented through Expedia who was amazing at helping me to rectify the situation. Unfortunately, when started experiencing major problems with Scotties I was told by Economy Rent a Car it was not their problem (Expedia agents were told them same). We tried a discount car rental company to see if we could save a few bucks on our vacation. It was a nightmare. The first car they gave us wouldn't even start. The next car either. The last car they had was an old jalopy with 140,000km and a japanese radio and no usb to charge our phone to use GPS. After being tired from a long flight we took it. My experience was Bad from the start. Price was very high. They didn't have the SUV I had booked. They tried to fit my family of five with 10days luggage, car chairs, pushchair and surfboards into a sedan that I couldn't fit two standard travel cases. NEVER EVER AGAIN, would I consider, refer or use this mob. Self described as a budget rental car company which is appropriate when booking but very different when it comes to being charged. An initial charge of $85.99AUD (booked via expedia.com.au) in the end costing me the tidy sum of $219.22AUD. I had a very bad experience with Scotties at queenstown. We rented a car via economy rental car and we booked an economy size car. By economy car we meant small car (golf, polo, etc) as it is easier to park and they gave us a 2002 nissan @ 75 USD with 200k kms and all scratched from outside and bad from inside. We are very sorry this did not work out for you. This was through our very busy time. We were answering phones but the share volume of calls was crazy. We are looking at our phone systems to cope with this. Most companies charge for flat tyres to be changed as it is not us but the company that we call to assist them charging. We do sell windscreen and tyre insurance which he did not take. The cost of the car was $45.00 per day not $75 or $112.

Thanks for your valuable feedback and we will discuss what we can do in the future to address these issues. We would never say " Renting car with us does not mean that we are at your service" and"its not their problem if the car breaks down". We always help our customers and do not want them to have to pay unnecessary money for someone to change their tyre. If they were nearby we would have assisted them but can not drive hours to change a tyre over a busy Christmas period.

The sentence that I quoted about service was litterly told by your french agent. Had your agent been polite we would have let everything go. We were travelling all the way from Canada and got this type of behaviour. Nothing is more expensive than self respect. The car was 45 USD but with taxes it was 75 USD but we were charged 112 USD. These were the rudest people we have had the pleasure of meeting all year.

Yes one of our staff made a mistake entering the booking but as soon as the customers mentioned they booked a bigger car they were immediately changed into one. No wait time as it was fixed while they did the paper work.

The car was checked for faults after the hire and none were found. The next customers raved about it.

They had 3 options presented to them for after hours drop off ,none of which they did. They rang one of our staff at 0500 hrs , woke them from a deep sleep and abused the hell out of them. They would not listen to any solutions that were put to them.

If they thought this was horrific I hate to think how they would react to a real crisis. Avoid at all cost

This was the most unorganised, unefficient car rental company i have ever used! Not to mention more expensive than other companies. I am disgusted with the service that they provided for us when using them on our new zealand holiday trip, and do not recommend this company to anyone. “Don't use them - pay more”

Booked a car via Atlas.com and paid in advance. Booking was passed to a company called Letz who passed it on to their sister company called Scotties. The car was due to be picked up close to our hotel in Downtown Auckland. After several phone calls, we had to take a taxi ride to their depot. The car had over 230,000 km on the clock, had two hub cabs missing, no tono cover so our luggage was exposed, windscreen wiper blades worn out, air conditioning barely functioned. We looked after these people when no one else would as every one was booked out.They left it very late to book. We only had our backpacker range left. We give customers a clear drop off sheet and a Toll free number to contact us. Letz is not a sister company to Scotties

Just got back from New Zealand after a holiday visiting family. Fantastic time. The only downside was the hire car and service we received from Scotties. Sorry to hear this customer was not happy. It is always a play off between spending to much time going through every detail and getting on the road to enjoy your holiday.

Most companies do not cover tyres unless the customer takes extra insurance. This customer elected not to take any extra insurance

Because of this incident we have done a lot of surveying of others practice and found a lot of companies [including large multinationals] even if you take extra insurance do not cover tyres.

The good news is thanks to this being drawn to our attention we now offer an extra tyre insurance offer.

Rented a Daihatsu Sirion from Canada. When I arrived at Auckland Airport, I had to wait over an hour for the hire to show up. we do have different categories of cars , some older and cheaper and some not. We are not perfect and occasionally get it wrong, but good to know this customer was put in the right car. If you think you were overcharged please call because what you were quoted should always be what you were charged unless you opted for extras

“Beware of Scotties”

I booked a car through Honk and they put me onto these guys. Keith Scott initially said he would pick us up from our flight. He then wrote me an email 2 days later saying that he would park the car for us and we could get it out of the park for $36. I then read this review centre (very helpful) which gave Scotties Car Rentals a bad rating. I cancelled the booking through Honk who were very helpful but didn't give me all my money back as promised. I will definitely not be dealing with Scotties… Read Full Review

Thank you for your valuable Feed back.We do pick ups from 07.00 to1700 hrs from the airport or city hotels in Auckland

After hours we leave the vehicle at a location best for the client. The airport car park costs $36.00. This is an airport cost not a Scotties charge. We have no extra charges for after hours. If we could find a better way we would. Every airport in the world has high car parking costs and we have no control over this.

We hired a car from Christchurch to Auckland. On arrival at Christchurch we were told our car had a light fault so we were sent round the corner to get a coffee,at Scotties expense, on returning to the depot we were offered a Mitsubishi Pajero as I could drive a manual gearbox, I am an H.G.V. driver with over 45 years driving experience, after 2 weeks the gearbox fell to bits leaving us with just 4th gear, we were about 1 1/2 hrs north of Christchurch. Good to get your feedback. we try our best to get things right but cars sometimes give you grief even the Mitsubishi experts were at a loss as to why a car as young as this had a gearbox malfunction.

We are sorry if you had to get your own way back to Christchurch but it was at exactly the same time as a large earthquake had hit the city with a large number of people dead. It was difficult to get someone to drop everything to drive a car north to meet you. If you never got your refund I am sorry email Annie and I will sort it out.

Terrible - they are off airport, with their airport office in a motel. Cars are old and knackered and staff unfriendly. They'll also try and overcharge your credit card once you've left! Avoid, it's not worth the $$'s you save over Hertz/Avis/Budget etc etc… Read Full Review

There are over 200 rental car companies in Auckland and NO New Zealand companies have offices in the terminal - only the big multi-nationals (eg Avis and Hertz). Scotties has been operating 25 years and offer great service and the staff are very friendly.
