147Weeks's review of Alamo Car Hire

“They'll make a claim damage from you! You can...”

Written on: 08/09/2017 by 147Weeks (1 review written)

So, after reading a number of negative reviews and knowing what to look out for we went with Alamo to hire a car at Figari airport Corsica. Prior to taking it we did an extremely thorough investigation of the car, taking photos of everything we saw. We then took the photos and our car damage inspection checklist back to the counter to ensure we wouldn't get charged for these later on. Their original damage inspection form had only 3 of the marks and dents on there, and we had included 10 additional marks including a scratch running the entire length of the left rear passenger door where it had been keyed.

The person at the counter effectively said that unless its a deep scratch which wasn't picked up then they didn't really care about it.

As an aside,we were told that it had a full tank of fuel and to return it full, but it was actually less than half when we drove away. That's our fault for not returning and forcing them to give us a full tank, but just another thing to look out for from these guys.

Upon return of the vehicle a week later without any damage caused by ourselves, including stopping on our way there to vaccuum the car to avoid their 65 euros charge for cleaning, the lady at the counter came and did an extremely thorough inspection of the vehicle, including pointing out each bit of damage found on the vehicle which we had already marked in the pre-hire inspection form. She came by a tiny pinpoint dent, about 1-2mm wide and no more than 2mm deep. It would be virtually impossible to pick up by anybody not knowing where to look and can only be seen with the right angle of sunlight. Of course its the one we missed because of how small it was, and somehow they claim that damage alone will cost 590 euros to repair.

Its funny because the customers taking our car after us had already arrived, and they were given the same pre-hire inspection form we got with only 2 of the 12 marks found. We discussed with them to ensure they didnt have the same experience as  us.

The horrible part of this is how they do the bare minimum when hiring out the car to the customer, excluding all existing damage so the customer finds each mark and dent themselves (and most likely similar to us will miss one) then going to extreme detail upon return of the vehicle to get the money out of you. I wouldn't have been as upset if they weren't so disingenuous by deliberately leaving out the same damages on the damage inspection form to every customer, just so they can try to claim it.

In terms of the vehicle, apart from the scratches, the vehicle was nice. The additional cleaning charge which we avoided, but some people rushing back to the airport might forget about, is pretty obscene, and the routine of continuously charging each customer for the same scratches is just disgusting.

If you decide to throw caution to the wind and hire a car with this company, I would say don't! And back out while you can!
