I'm A Little Mystified By The Reviews I've Read On

I'm a little mystified by the reviews I've read on hosting-unlimited. I've been with them for a few years now and find them to be reliable and quick to help when you have a problem. All for £22.95 a year - can't be bad!

At One Time, Well Over A Year Ago, Hosting-unlimit

At one time, well over a year ago, Hosting-Unlimited were able to provide a fairly lacklustre package at an affordable price. At the time of writing, all three sites that I've yet to move away from their hosting are down, and they have been for the last 24 hours. Their support system, such as it is, is also unavailable.

In the past year they have either lost or rolled back by as much as 12 days entire databases, and pray that you never incur the wrath of their Technical Support Director by using anything other than the registered email address to get support.

Their own website forum was recently brought down by a hacker, and to cap it all, their server side software currently contains a Trojan which they are unable to remove. There is worse, but I'm sure you get the picture already.

I am in the process of removing my data to a proper hosting company.

They Were Great When I First Signed Up With Them A

They were great when I first signed up with them about 3 years ago. They were cheap and reliable, and support was reasonable. The only problem I had was them randomly deleting my entire site and database, with absolutely no explanation or apology whatsoever, despite repeatedly submitted support tickets and posts on their forums. As the site isn't critical, I just accepted I was never getting any explanation and just restored it from my own backup.

Despite this incident I wasn't really put off Hosting-Unlimited until about a year ago, when reliability started to plummet, leading to poor uptimes and problems with PHP etc. Their support system is appalling. Their staff seem utterly incapable of even understanding what the problem is, let alone fixing it. The fact that they have no telephone support, which would be fair enough if their online support were competent - means that you have no assurance that problems will be fixed quickly.

Of particular note are a couple of problems that have surfaced this year and affected a large number of users. One was the output of PHP scripts being truncated for some reason at 65k. This problem first appeared in July 2006, and as of November 2006 it still hasn't been fixed, despite a total server migration to a new clustered solution (which was supposed to improve reliability, but if anything it has made things worse). Another more serious problem is malicious javascript being inserted into all pages served from their servers. Again, HU seem to have no idea what's causing this, and they still haven't fixed it, 2 months after it first cropped up.

I get the impression they're technically competent, but just too busy to provide a decent service. This would be forgivable for a couple of months at most, but not the year or so it's been like this.

Staff Are Sometimes Friendly, But The Up-time Is O

Staff are sometimes friendly, but the up-time is often around 90%. Whole days of sites being down. Poor communication. Terrible customer support - I often had to tell the support staff at Hosting-Unlimited what the problem was and how to fix it. Payment system lists domains that have long expired and doesn't update domain renewal dates.

Hosting-unlimited Forced Me To Conclude That Such

Hosting-Unlimited forced me to conclude that such cheap hosting is truly a false economy.

1) Consistent service has always been a problem since joining them almost 2 years ago, with random periods where the web site becomes unresponsive. I forgave it, as I could not find a cheaper hosting company in the UK. More recently it got really bad and I complained. I guess quite a few other people did, as they finally decided to migrate to new servers. (The migration was a moderately successful, but intermittent unresponsiveness is still there).

3) They use tactics when dealing with violations of their acceptable use policy. As a result of an exploit in out-of-date software installed from their tools, my site was suspended. I was not notified at all; the site, email and all access was simply shutdown. I managed to get things back up 2 days later. Two weeks later they cut me off again without warning for the same problem (which had long since been resolved in coordination with their tech staff), and only after a couple of emails and putting 'legal action' in the last one did I actually get a response from someone outside of tech support, who then somehow had the time to write a two page accusatory email. For example, I was blamed for "100's of other clients loosing service because of the exploit". Little did he know I had two other friends on the same server that didn't experience a minute of problems. And after almost two years of being with them I felt that they had no loyalty to me what-so-ever.

4) They brag about quick response times, but it only happens when the issue you raise is a very simple question which only needs a quick answer - the rest of the time you do get responses, but the first 2 or 3 can be generic (possibly automaton generated). There is no way to contact them by telephone. So when the chips are down and you want to yell at someone you can't. Forget about it until Monday if you have problems on a Friday afternoon.

Hosting-unlimited.net Is One Of The Poorest Hosts

Hosting-Unlimited.net is one of the poorest hosts I've ever used.

Usually there is something positive that can be said, but unfortunately there is nothing when it comes to Hosting-Unlimited.

The Hosting-Unlimited service is extremely poor. Sites will go down frequently and without warning. Support is extremely poor, and problems are unresolved. Their forums are unhelpful.

Hosting-unlimited (aka Goltho Grange Aka Scotoni A

Hosting-Unlimited (AKA Goltho Grange AKA Scotoni and who knows what before) seem to be barely able to fulfil the services they offer. I have had my account cancelled "by accident" and I have been given instructions to change DNS settings on my domains after a recent migration of their servers, which was also a "mistake". Not only this, but in the past I have had to actively chase support in order pay the company and avoid yet more account cancellations. Support is very unhelpful, and in my 10 years of internet experience this has been one of the worst services I have come across. At times I've felt that I was the one giving them technical support. I chose the service because of the relatively expensive fees, but in this case you just don't get what you pay for.
