I Bought A Used Zx50 2003 With 1,000 Miles. It Is
I bought a used ZX50 2003 with 1,000 miles. It is is perfect condition and serviced regularly, ams synthetic oil and premium gas. When I returned to Florida after a 8 month absence, scooter wouldn't start even after putting in a stabilizer before we left. I took it to a scooter mechanic and the motor has to be rebuilt (lower end issue & needs new crank bearings). The scooter will not start only backfires. Any suggestions or any same problems? 3 Years Of Absolutely Trouble Free Performancefrom
3 years of absolutely trouble free performancefrom Kymco ZX 50. Ridden daily and still using OEM spark plug and belt. 75 mpg hauling around a 260 lb rider. This thing paid for itself in the first six months. General maintenance, I do run high quality synthetic 2-cycle oil and premium gas. Battery is just going after three years of riding. Thinking about upgrading to a larger Kymco. Due to quality, reliability and loud pipes, I call it my Taiwanese Harley-Davidson

Stable And Sturdy Moped. Never Fallen. 3 Years O
Stable and sturdy moped. Never fallen. 3 years of use. Fast, mostly reliable.
At best performance moped would kick into some gear sounded like a jet and would go 48ish on a flat and ~55mph down a hill. Now regularly gets a respectable 42mph.
Good gas mileage though could be better.
Maximum drop of 5mph up hills!
Good steering / Cornering!
The main problems with this moped are the spark plug and CDI box.
Stock CDI box has an rpm limiter so that even down a hill does not get more than 42mph. When replaced with a working Honda Spree or Honda Elite CDI (~$35 used) it will roll freely.
Stock Spark plugs (NGK) need to be replaced often ($3) and it's a pain. It took replacing it 4 or 5 times before I popped for an Iridium Spark plug ($10), which also increased performance, and now I haven't had to replace it (it's been 6mo).
RECOMMENDATIONS: If you get this moped: make sure it's derestricted (aka take the governor off), buy the iridium spark plug and replace plug at first sight of poor performance, buy the cdi or alter the existing cdi by clipping the light green wire (the cdi that youd buy does not have the light green wire input - don't take my word on the color it's been a while)
After a few years replace the stock belt with performance Kevlar belt (replacement due to normal wear and slows down moped- Kevlar belt is $45)
Also - I guess mice sometimes will get up in the wheel wells if it's cold out and they bite through my blinker and headlight wires - it was interesting but a simple fix.
A little louder than some other mopeds...
Slower acceleration than much smaller mopeds (w/ half its weight) but that makes sense.
A good buy. Reliable. Fast. You should always get at least 40mph.
