“NEW RELEASE BY SINGER-SONGWRITER KATHY SANBORN”

★★★★★

Vocalist and composer kathy sanborn takes us on a cosmological ride a couple of years ago singer and songwriter kathy sanborn heard about astronomers on hawaii who discovered that our milky way galaxy is part of a major cluster of galaxies which they named laniakea, a polynesian word that means “immeasurable heaven. ” so sanborn took that galactic idea as the theme of her new age music album, lights of laniakea, in which she explores outerspace and innerspace -- traveling throughout the cosmos, admiring the light from multitudes of stars in the universe, and searching for the light (god, enlightenment, inner peace, pick a pleasure). Sanborn, a former jazz singer and american songwriting awards winner, has previously written and recorded albums ranging from straight-ahead jazz and latin-jazz to new age and r&b. But on this album she wrote new age lyrics and placed them in gentle new age settings with the help of arranger ricky kej, a popular musician in his own right, who spends much of his life in india and so brought to this recording a number of musicians based in or influenced by india (the propulsive and rhythmic percussion instruments are mostly from india as well as appearances by a sitar and santoor). Key also helps out on bass and keyboards, and there also are appearances by other musicians playing flutes and trumpet. It all works together to form an interesting new age pastiche of spaceology, gentle sounds and ethnic-music backgrounds that swirl around sanborn’s hypnotic vocals. When you can say that an album of music does not exactly sound like anyone else, it is generally a compliment, but also a bit scary for listeners used to familiar touchstones in popular art. But when the music is this good, it over-rides all concerns and simply pleases anyone who takes the time to sit back and enjoy this cosmological ride.
