World class Home style cooking in the Hart of the Swansea Valley with a Christamas menu to die for and Real ales served to perfection 5/5.

We were looking for somewhere for a relaxed unplanned lunch within easy driving distance and from somewhere the idea of venturing to the newly re-opened Ancient Britton pub in Abercrave / Penycae, Swansea Valley came to mind. The decor is dodgy and confused - harldy oldie worldly but the welcome warm, as was the array of real ales on display. On this first visit our bar meals were good, home made and tasty. I had Faggots, mash and peas with gravy - not a gastranomic challenge as such but this traditional local dish is easily ruined and the locals will be the first to tell you. Delicious and earthy. So father in law's birthday arrived last weekend and we thought we'd risk taking the old goat for a roast dinner and a pint of ale or two. Both he and mother-in-law enjoyed their rare venture to a pub and ale went down a storm. Food equally made an impact - plates were virtually licked clean. Roast Beef and Pork were good, if a little over seasoned, and the vegetables plentiful, firm and fresh. Staff again were amazingly attentive without being in our faces and the warm welcome memorable. It's not a Michelin star type place, the decor is a bit sad but the food, welcome and real ales are well worth indulging in! Pr9ce wise the four of us had three courses each and a few drinks and got out for under £50. Amazing. Da iawn! Recommend.
