“Generally good experience plus tip to cut costs”

★★★★☆

I have travelled a lot with adventure companies including 6 times with Exodus. Generally I would say that Exodus is one of the better companies, but with all these companies a lot depends on the local leader. If you are not happy with the way the trip is run and can justify this, ask the company for part of the cost back. I have done this (not with Exodus) on one occasion and got money back.

Over the last few years there has been a lot of consolidation in this industry. Exodus is now owned by the giant TUI group which also owns many other adventure companies. Check that your trip is actually being run by Exodus and that you are not being sold a trip organised by one of the other TUI companies such as Gecko. The companies operate slightly differently and attract different clientel.

A good company trains and then monitors its local leaders to maintain standards. Some people feel that the consolidation in the industry has led to a more profit-orientated approach and loss of the original pioneering spirit with which the companies were founded. Ask if the local leader is an employee of the travel company or is self-employed. In the second case they will have less commitment to the company and to a successful experience for you.

Also check to see if the company offer a land only price for the trip and if you can book the flights cheaper yourself. The companies charge an average price having pre-purchased from the airlines, but if you are travelling at a quiet period you may be able to buy the flights much cheaper yourself. I have just booked a trip with Exodus and saved over a third off the price Exodus was charging for flights.

Don't be afraid to ask questions before you commit yourself - that's when you are in the strongest position.
