After extensive internet research, we opted to stay at the Pera Rose for our recent 5-day stay in Istanbul. We booked directly with the Hotel via their website which was a smooth and efficient process without any hassles.
Turns out that the research paid off!
The hotel is an absolute gem in pretty much every respect. Their customer service is exemplary, the rooms very tidy, the beds are supremely comfortable, the breakfast sumptuous, and the general hotel infrastructure proved just perfect. Unexpected details included a "pillow menu", in case your head wants to rest on something particular.
The location was also exactly what we looked for - the hustle and bustle of the vibrant neighbourhood is virtually at your doorstep (without being in direct earshot!).
It is evident that the business is very well set up; it certainly seems to operate like a well-oiled machine.
We found it to be a place of genuine smiles and felt very welcome. In fact, we hope to return to Istanbul next year ... no prize for guessing where we'll stay!

LOCATION: Great! On a quiet street 2 blocks from the main shopping street in the modern city.
BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Bed was very comfortable (softer than most in Turkey). Sheets and pillows were also comfortable with nice linens.
LIGHTING: Fine in bedroom and bathroom.
SHOWER: Clean with great water pressure. Mould, however was plentiful.
CLEANLINESS: Room and common areas were spotless
A/C: Kept room very cold (if desired).
STYLE OF ROOM: Grandma-ish but comfortable. Nothing exciting but great for the price.
FOOD: Breakfast was ok with Turkish breakfast and choice of 3 cereals.
TV/INTERNET: Free wireless in room and a few English channels on TV.
SERVICE: Fair.
TIPS: This hotel is very nice for the price. Nothing special but hard to beat the location and looks of the hotel for just over US$100/night. Very good value!

This Is A Nice, Smaller Hotel With Some 40 Rooms (
This is a nice, smaller hotel with some 40 rooms (estimated), centrally located just off stiklal Caddesi, close to the British consulate-general and about eight minutes walking distance to Taksim square.
My room was normally sized and had a double bed plus one single bed, a small desk, TV and locker. The bathroom had a shower but no bathtub. From my room, I had a wonderful view over the Golden Horn towards Sultanahmet, but I know that there are also smaller rooms that open towards small light wells, so it might be advisable to specifically request a room with a view, if that's important to you.
The hotel has a small gym with one treadmill, one stepper and one bench with a set of dumbbells. There is also a little hamam and you can get a massage (haven't tried either of them). The only detriment is that the gym is open only from 10 to 22 hours, which makes it difficult for business guests to workout in the morning.
Wifi internet access is provided for free in all rooms, but it was slow and did not work on several occasions.
Service was very friendly. One weird thing is that chambermaids rearranged my personal items when cleaning the rooms, such as putting papers and pens from the desk into a drawer or moving toilet articles in the bathroom. While I didn't find this particularly disturbing it is certainly something that most hotels would not allow, considering it an invasion of the guest's privacy.
Breakfast was OK, although strangely there was no jam, marmelade or honey, only a wide selection of cheese and sausages.
