The First Problem At The Wrea Head Hotel In Scarbo
The first problem at the Wrea Head Hotel in Scarborough was on the first morning, when the shower head was found to be broken and almost unusable. I reported this to reception around 8am that day to be told that "yes, some customers have reported low water pressure on that floor, and the shower was de-scaled at the end of last year". I pointed out that it was not a matter of water pressure or scale but a faulty shower unit, and a note was made accordingly on a scrap of paper.
We returned to the hotel at 5.30 that afternoon to find nothing had been done. More to the point, I went back to reception to report this, and the lady who was on duty at that time was studying her computer screen, did not look at me or stand up, and just said "can I help?". No apology or explanation, and there followed a discussion amongst all available members of staff as to how to resolve this. I suggested replacing the head, and it was eventually decided to remove one from another room. That solved that problem, but the whole day had been available to buy a replacement shower head.
On the matter of the room itself, it was a very pleasant large room, but the inside of the window was filthy with black mildew along the inside top panes, and it has obviously been there for many months. One of the curtains was hanging off the rail. The bathroom extractor fan high in the ceiling was very very noisy when first switched on, and it was so blocked up with dust, it had obviously not been cleaned for years. The level of lighting in this area was extremely poor. The quality of the toilet paper and supplied box of tissues was about the cheapest available. The attentions of the room service was minimal, and not even the bed was made properly, and the bathroom appeared untouched.
Dear Reviewer,
I would like to talk to you about your experience at the Wrea Head Hotel.
To explain: I am studying for a Master of Science in Marketing degree at Manchester Business School (UK) and currently working on my dissertation, which is about online reviews that have been written as a result of particularly bad service (not product!) experiences, e.g. during airline travel, hotel stays, car repair, etc.
I am looking for individuals who are willing to talk to me about these experiences and their reviews via Internet chat. The choice of the chat medium is up to you (AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Skype etc.). The interviews will take no more than one hour, and very likely less than that. We could arrange and/or split sessions at your convenience. Based on the analysis of the interviews, advice will be given to companies on how to improve customer service. Therefore, by contributing to my research YOU can help make the world a little bit better for service customers everywhere! As an added incentive for you to participate, I will do a raffle among the respondents. You will have the chance to win a $50 Amazon gift certificate!
Needless to say, all information provided by you would be treated confidentially and you anonymity will be guaranteed. To prove these claims I will gladly provide you with the contact details of my academic supervisor as well as a reference letter from my school.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience at [email protected] for further details and please include a link to your review in your response. Many thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
Marc Morian
Well I wrote, by post, to English Rose Hotels, the owners of Wrea Head the day after I returned. Two and a half weeks later following an email prompt from me I received a reply which basically thanked me for bringing these matters to their attention but no offer of compensation or a complimentary weekend at another of their establishments! Probably just as well!
