We Would Love To Know The Criteria Used By The Bla

We would love to know the criteria used by the Blackpool tourist authority when handing out awards. Somehow The Vernon Hotel had won awards in the past and we overheard the owners saying they hadn't won this year but had been highly commended.

Our first night there (Friday) our toilet sprung a leak and was dripping all over the floor. We immediately pointed this out to the owners on our way out for the evening. Upon our return we found a small plastic container there which was overflowing. We emptied this container a few times through the course of the night.

We reported to the owners on our way out the next morning, that the container was filling on average of an hour and a half. Upon our return at dinner time we found towels had been placed on the floor around the container which had overflowed.

On top of all this the door opening into the shower stall was approximately 8 inches. My husband and I are fairly big people but not as big as some. I barely managed to squeeze my way in with great difficulty but my husband could not get in at all. Unless you are Twiggy forget it.

We told the owners this but they were unable to give us another room due to being booked solid.

In addition there was no remote control for the television which isn't a huge tragedy but we think is one of the "basics" one can expect.

Our plumbing problem was not sorted until our last evening (Monday) when the plumbers were finally brought in. We had planned to stay in and have an early evening but we couldn't.

We found the bathroom to be quite filthy anyway. There was black mould throughout the shower stall, the sink taps had so much "gunk" around them that looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years! To make the point, on the day of arrival I noticed a "foreign" hair on the wash basin, behind the tap. It remained there for the duration of our stay even though the room was supposedly cleaned daily. In this day of baceteria and diseases we don't think such a lack of hygiene is acceptable.

The food was excellent and provided for choices which is always welcome. The owners were very nice people but not very savvy in customer service since we were offered no apologies and nothing in the way of compensation. Unfortunately, besides the state of the room, on this basis alone we will not be returning especially since a few weeks prior we had stayed at another hotel on the same board basis, same length of stay, was £40 cheaper and much more satisfactory accommodation.
