A Bit Of A Slog To And From The Apartment, Especia

A bit of a slog to and from the apartment, especially in the heat! Going down to the town not so bad, but coming back up the hill, even at 6 in the evening, was tough for us! It was over a mile from the apartment to the old harbour/beaches etc, a lot of it is main road with no footpaths, and as neither of us are great walkers, we had a bit of a shock when we arrived. Having said that, it became something of a daily challenge to see how far we could walk in a day and clock up the miles as I discovered that my phone has a pedometer function on it! On an average day it was 4-5 miles, but one day we managed to clock up 9 miles - a great way to persuade yourself that you CAN have that extra Mythos without worrying about the calories! Taxi from the rank in town to the apartment tended to be 4 euros if he dropped us at the end of the drive to Thea, and 5 if he took us to the top, although this wasn't a hard and fast rule. If you go on the bus to anywhere, you can sometimes get the driver to drop you near the studios on the way back, if he understands you, he's normally happy to do so. The bus drivers are something else! Winding mountain roads, with sheer drops to one side - smoking with one hand, using his mobile with the other, and occasionally steering the bus if the bend is really sharp! Better to just put on a fixed grin and stare at the scenery opposite the sheer drops!

The apartment was very basic, which is what we expected from self catering in Greece. No kettle, but there was a Greek style coffee pot, which took 9 minutes to boil - I know this because it's the snooze time on my alarm, so I could go back to bed and have a nice cup of coffee when the alarm went off for the second time. Only one spoon in the apartment, good job we didn't want yoghurt for our breakfast otherwise we would have to have eaten in shifts. Air conditioning was an optional extra at 5 euros a day, but although we were there in July and it was damned hot, we didn't need the air con.

The old part of Thassos town was really beautiful, with some lovely bars and restaurants - in particular we liked Bar Karanti (The Yellow House), because the staff and the kittens were so friendly. For harbour restaurants, Simi (the one with the cream coloured chairs) was nice (the one next door, Platanakia with the blue coloured chairs should be avoided in my opinion) and the meat meze at Mythos Restaurant was good value. Mythos also did a lunchtime special of Gyros pitta for 2 euros, great if you're on a tight budget - we couldn't eat a thing for the rest of the day, even my other half who's known as "Dustbin" by his family because of his enormous appetite! Pigi, in the town square served excellent traditional home cooked meals, although you do have to forgo your harbour view. Drossia, the really busy restaurant in the square in Panagia served us a lovely lunch, best moussaka of the holiday!

All in all, it was a lovely holiday. I would recommend Thassos to anyone who wants quietish holiday in an unspoilt, peaceful (or rather, just lively enough) location.

Thea Studios: Excellent Holiday, Lovely Food,

Thea Studios:

Excellent holiday, lovely food, most suitable for couples. Restaurants are most welcoming to their diners and will often give you a free drink or dessert. Prices are very cheap around 6 euros for your main meal; wine around 9-12 euros, although house wine can be much cheaper.

Many tourists from Germany, other parts of Greece, and Brits, although not saturated in lager lout Brits as that would clearly ruin it.

One of the safest places you can go to, you can leave your stuff and never worry about it going missing, highly unusual for tourist destination.

Shopkeepers can seem to be a bit more moody as I suppose the restaurants get the most custom but nevertheless that's not going to ruin your holiday.

Twins restaurant was the best, along with the other restaurants on that street. Also the one with the Yellow chairs outside, who takes all the custom from the one with Blue chairs along the beach front. (sorry can't remember any names).

Go for walks up the mountains

Travel round the Island in a car, you can get some amazing views.

Visit Makryammos (private resort), very clean beach.

Look at for the young flower girl, someone buy a rose and make her smile.

Lots of cats also, not very affectionate though- but that's good coz I don't like them much.

Accommodation basic, but clean, about 15 mins walk from the town but it's a good walk to sober up or walk off your food.

Visit Thassos if you're looking for a nice relaxed holiday, with a big focus on walking, eating, drinking and sitting on the beach.
