Golden Beach, Ioannis Hotel

Pros - Big Pool, mountain views. The beautiful beach very close - restaurants/tavernas around all excellent

Cons - some rooms aren't updated and not particularly clean. Stupid rules around the pool. The staff.

As a Brit we didn't feel welcome here - Staff seem to concentrate on half board Eastern European guests.

Breakfast less than average quality and choice no fruit

Don't order cocktail before 9pm - Its not cocktail time and I was prepared to pay the 7 euros as well - inside bar never open??

MY ADVICE

GO TO NOSTOS. BLUE BAY. EMERALD OR GEORGE HOTELS AND NOT IONNAIS

On the whole, very good value for money with pleasant, easy-going staff. Basic, clean room with wonderful green vista from balcony. Attractively appointed swimming pool within hotel garden. Proximity to beach a plus.

Rooms were OK at the Ioannis Hotel although the toilet/shower had a noisy extractor fan and dicky light switch that the manager told us to bang hard if we wanted it to work!! Balcony was excellent with awesome mountain views although at our end of the building there was no dividing walls which meant little privacy from the family next door.

Beds were not made by the maid, your bed sheet was just folded at the bottom of your bed and left for you. Aircon was very good though.

One day after returning from the beach in the usual hot, sweaty condition we found no towels available for a shower. The dirty ones had been taken but no replacements left. I challenged the manager who did not apologise but promised to replace them immediately - fair enough...1 hour later I had to go down to him again only to find him chatting with guests at the dinner table!!

He just said he had forgotten as he was busy helping with the dinners that were being served. He went himself and got me replacement towels in seconds...but again, no apology. Something must have been said to the maid, as from then on we were inundated with towels every day!

The hotel receptionist was a lovely girl and always smiled and greeted you, the only thing was, she couldn't speak a word of English - a necessary quality, I would have thought, for a receptionist at an international hotel. I tried to ask her for a password to access the Hotel's wi-fi service and after several communication attempts including drawings she delightfully referred me to the supermarket!

My wife and I had no major gripes with the place except the hotel management wandered around looking like they had lost a winning lottery ticket. I think in such a competitive world instances such as these make the difference as to whether you would stay at the hotel again. I am afraid we wouldn't.

Thassos is a fantastic place and we plan to go there again but will definitely use another hotel.

The Ioannis Hotel in Thassos offers stunning views of the interior of the island. I wouldn't mind staying there again.

The staff were helpful. the rooms were cool even without air conditioning. the pool was nice with a good poolside bar and a few shops and restaurants.

Resort is peaceful and the beach is very attractive. The Ioannis hotel is very close to the beach, but also to the nearby campsite where visitors often intrude around the private pool area.

Pool was great and you could normally get a bed (if locals and visitors didn't dominate - usually more of a problem at weekends).

Could hear noise at night (we were on ground floor though).

Had a little gym which was nice.

Staff seemed friendly

Breakfast is very average (you'd better like bread, though the boiled eggs - when served - were tasty).

This was our first time to Thassos and you can see why people come back time and again.

Golden Beach is the best end of the bay and this is one of the best hotels in the resort. Just take in the view with the mountains all around. There's a good choice of restaurants around the hotel and along the beachfront. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful.

The beach is a couple of minutes walk from the hotel and Scala Potamias is half an hour walk along the road or beach, but to be honest the beach isn't as good up that end. The hotel pool is great and there are always beds available even with the odd couple occupied by German towels from 10:00am till 4:00pm!!

The only thing we were disappointed about was the lack of socialising at the pool bar in the evenings, very quiet, it seems a lot of the guests are East European and dont seem to spend their money at the hotel. So if you go spend your money with Alex at the pool bar and keep him busy, he makes the best Greek salad around just dont try too much Tsipouro if he offers you one.

If you like Greek islands you'll love Thassos, its still relatively unspoilt and cheaper than some of the others. Can't recommend it enough.

Ioannis Golden Beach Hotel - It is set in a lovely area with stunning views, staff couldn't do enough for us. We asked about local weather forecasts and the next day they had downloaded a forecast from the internet. Very helpful without being interfering. Rooms cleaned on a daily basis [but not Sunday]. Overall service was great.

There was no air con, but while we were there rooms were being upgraded and air con systems were being fitted. The rooms were possibly a bit on the small side but had everything we needed, lovely balcony.
