Great House, Welcoming Hosts

Our hosts were helpful and friendly from the moment we made an enquiry about The House of Two Pines and by the time we left we were like old friends despite our mutual dependency on sign language, school Italian/English and Google Translator. She met us promptly in Alberobello to take us to the house which is about 2 k from town in a very pretty location on quiet lanes. The house was immaculate and we appreciated the local cheeses, fruit and herbs that welcomed us (we used the mozzarella in an aubergine/tomato bake by the way). Our hosts provided us with maps and helpful information and, when our GPS failed us in the dark, even offered to drive from Bari to rescue us. (Fortunately we managed to reset the co-ordinates). The gardens and pool were lovely and the 'guard' dog who kept an eye on us when we walked down the lanes and slept near the house was a sweet creature. The house was perfect for our four Chalk the Sun writers ( we had just come from or annual writing retreat in Ostuni, quiet, nice to look at, with inspiring views). We had a double room each and three bathrooms, all very well-appointed. A much bigger group would be very comfortable too. Lots of clean towels provided. The house is stylish but homely and with the autumn evenings getting chilly it was wonderful to find that the heating was set to come on at night. Everyday we noticed a new picture or ornament or a thoughtful touch such as anti-mosquito plugs. Our host thoughtfully dropped us off extra blankets and was jolly and patient when we managed to lock ourselves out of the house. The kitchen had everything you could want (except perhaps a potato ricer/masher) a blender, huge pans for family cooking, and lots of plates etc. There's a dishwasher, washing machine, iron and all the detergents etc provided. We didn't use the enormous second outside kitchen apart from to put water in the fridges but you could entertain lots of guests in summer. The sunny terrace with lovely view was perfect for breakfast and we sat round the pool in one of the many loungers and hammocks provided. We really enjoyed walking to town down the lanes looking at all the trulli - I don't think we will bother to rent a car next time. taxis, feet and bicycles would be more relaxing. the location is perfect for day trips to Martina Franca, Locorontondo and the coast. We are looking forward to enjoying another stay in this gorgeous place and seeing more of our charming hosts. We must improve our Italian!
