Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii Is A Very O
Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii is a very old and dated airport but non-the-less, well laid out.
Note that as far as departures are concerned, due to the Hawaiian Island being the most isolated chain of islands on earth, they are unbelievably strict on the transportation, smuggling and contamination of biological organisms. This is noticed by their security screening procedures, which can add an extra 30 minutes on to your check-in at busy times. However, it's bearable as you know why it's happening. DO NOT buy any flower bulbs (especially orchids) that are on sale in and around Oahu as you will not be permitted to take them out of the country.
The departure area is clean and tidy, though it is quite dated now. There's a selection of 'eateries' and the coffee (Kona coffee) is second to none. Other than that don't expect too much as the airport operates under what the locals would call 'Hawaiian time' i.e. why rush!
Between check in and the departure lounge you'll walk across an open air walkway. This is a little strange as you have clear views of runway traffic and for all you smokers out there....they allow you to have smoke here too, though you do have to stand against the 'landside' wall not the 'airside' one.
Arrivals (I flew domestically between San Francisco and Honolulu) is a total breeze. The domestic arrivals section is air conditioned and collecting your luggage doesn't take any time at all. Wait for the sudden rush of heat as you pas through the exit! Aloha and enjoy it!
