Have been living in PNG for over a year and get a domestic flight at least once a fortnight with an international once every few months. International a/c are tired with entertainment systems from the 1970's. Domestic a little newer whem the crew can be bothered to show up to fly them. 5 hour delays on the POM Lae service are frequent and they have a great habit of downsizing airframes from 99 to 66 seaters. Never had an apology fro any of their mess ups and if you ever hear the announcement that begins 'Due to echnical reasons.....you're in for a long wait. The Singapore route is way overpriced on old aircraft, last time I flew the entertainment system - you know the one - one CRT screen placed every 6th Row so you ned binos to see it - wasnt working and my coleague had to have a crew meal as they had run out. Trust me this is not a one off - when the 767 on the Brisbane route go tech they replace with F100's from the domestic leaving massive delays on the domestic schedule.
If at all possible go to Cairns on the Qantas hopper and get a decent airline from there. Travelling with these clowns is a total lottery and if you have connections - be afraid..be very afraid
my 12-year old daughter, was booked on a plane at 2pm this Sunday afternoon by Air Niugini from Madang to Port Moresby, and then to link to Brisbane and Auckland.
This is her first chance to meet any of her white relatives, and we had arranged meetings with the white aunt in Auckland - who was herself travelling from Africa and out of contact..
We came to Madang airport, 2 hours early. Security told us there was no flight, and that we could not go inside to ask about flights because there was no flight - and staff were having a meeting - and they might be having the meeting for an hour and a half.
We explained our problem - and the security said if they let us in to ask about travel times and connections they feared to lose their job.
I went inside anyway - and knocked loudly on the door where staff were having their meeting.
Somebody came out and said that the tourist agent should have told us to rebook. However, the travel agent had only told us to rebook if we wanted to change our booking.
Air Niugini's standard of service is then:
1. to cancel without public notice;
2. to refuse entry to those who come with a booked ticket;
3. to refuse explanation to those who come with a booked ticket.
Can I trust my daughter to travel with Air Niugini - where she needs to make contacting flights and meet relatives?

Wouldn't fly any other airline on the routes PX fly. The food as mentioned above is great. Always a decent size, and good quality. I feel the international fleet really does need an upgraded entertainment system as it's very lacking.

Air Niugini Is A Poorly Managed, Government Owned
Air Niugini is a poorly managed, government owned airline. Flights are consistently late or cancelled and the service is poor. Existing international aircraft is in dire need of upgrade.
