“Bentley Turbo R. 1997,wonderful performance for a...”

★★★★★

Nothing I don't like about this car. Feels wonderful to drive, good performance and makes driving an even greater experience, good view of road ahead and smooth. Road presence in shedloads and with a lovely ride over almost any road surface and makes the daily pot hole run a doddle. Very comfortable indeed, and tends to attract attention whenever out and makes you feel a million dollars to be at the wheel of this wonderful beast. You can tell I'm smitten I guess! I wanted one for years and when I found the right home then my next purchase was the 1997 Turbo R that after 9 years I still cannot wait to drive each time, goes out only in dry weather and serviced by a good independant religeously. Only downside is expense if big things go bad like head gaskets, had these done and thats about the biggest headache so far, if you are looking at a 60k miler make sure head gaskets done, they don't last much longer usually!

“A whole lot of car for the cash.”

★★★★★

written by SussexDel on 10/06/2013

This is real car. Its quick when pushed and classy to look at. Service cost's not bad for what you are driving if carried out by an independent garage. I have owned mine since 2007 and never ceased to admire it or love it. It get's plenty of admiration and people come up to ask about it. The driving in general is quiet, quick and smooth and has to be experienced. No downsides apart from unless you have the locking up for long periods correct the battery goes flat, a problem! One of the world's best cars, a possible future classic, but whatever, buy to enjoy, you will believe me, obtain from a SPECIALIST only! I researched and viewed several, no real "down" surprises after purchase but take your time and do your homework on car and seller.

“Palace on wheels”

★★★★★

written by on 02/05/2012

Having driven my 1997 Turbo R for five years I can not only recommend this palace on wheels for looks but for reliability and power. I love taking it for a drive and just enjoy the commanding view of the road and the smoothness and quiet of the car. You can "press on" if you have to with all the power available the car will waft you to high speed in a burble of V8 and smoothness. Independent service agents are few and far between but certainly help with bills especially when the 60.000 mile service is due. This is the "big one" and will cost the proverbial arm and two legs but thankfully only comes around every 60,000 miles so keeping the car as basically a good weather holiday and special day toy keeps the service due time down. My overall view...its absolute magic!

“Buying a cheap Bentley Turbo R is the most expensive...”

★★★★☆

written by fortyfive on 27/11/2007

Buying a cheap Bentley Turbo R is the most expensive thing to do. That FBSH is a must as they really do check and maintain the cars, not just change the oil- as long as the owner paid for it and not just asked for the 'inspection service' every year. Insist on seeing the invoices and check the Bentley service print-out. I went for a 1996 on car as they have the spare inside the boot, a bit more power and the adjustable steering column to give more knee room. I would ignore the pre active-ride cars and for me, the non floor change models too. I had the steering wheel rim rebuilt in wood by Myrtle and it was wonderful thereafter as tactile and a bit thicker. Traded mine for an Arnage R, but in some ways I preferred the Turbo R. It was faster and more nimble but the Arnage is much more solid and has more space inside and for getting in and out of.

I test drove one of the Bentley 'Turbo R' 6,750 it was great and I wish I would have bought it. This would be a good car to cruise the down town streets with. It is very roomy with exquisite wood grain job on the inside. When you look at though it gives you this feeling or longing to own thats what great about this car.

“Essential to purchase with full Bentley, or...”

★★★★★

Essential to purchase with full Bentley, or specialist, service history and specifically check that the very expensive major hydraulics / brakes service has been carried out at least every 8 years, and that FULL services were effected every 24k. Particularly check for sound: Turbo, steering pump, differential, brake disks, central locking, main odometer and cruise control, rot around cills etc. Brake / hydraulics mineral fluid must be changed every 2 years otherwise damage occurs. Tyres for 15" wheels incredibly expensive (£360.). Tyres for upgraded 17" wheels can be obtained for £120. So if you intend keeping the vehicle for decades then upgrade the wheels! Parts can be ridiculously expensive eg. turbo studs £34. plus VAT each. A friendly local engineer can manufacture these, and other small routine parts, for next to nothing. MPG around 18. From 1990 onwards two odometers were fitted: Check the electronic odometer as the classic odometer is often broken / frozen. If this model is properly maintained then it will run for decades and provide immense pleasure. But, try to run one long term on a shoe string and the ultimate expense could be vast. Pre-1994 models are not as fast on acceleration as a 4 litre Jaguar XJR but the engine has to move 2.50 tonnes and is such is adequately powerful for most purposes. Overall an exceptional driving experience and highly recommended. If you acquire a Bentley then membership of both national and local clubs is almost a must. The incredible national annual show has to be experienced. There is nothing else like it in the motoring world.
