This Kill Bill story is based on a character that Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino invented, called The Bride. The background that I have heard is that they came up with the character of the bride and the story surrounding her and decided to make it into a film. However, Uma Thurman fell pregnant, and so the making of the film was delayed, as Quentin Tarantino did not want anyone else to play the part of the bride - so I believe (I could be wrong).
The film itself starts with 'The Bride's' wedding being gate crashed (so to speak), and all of the wedding party, including The Bride being murdered. The Bride herself is shot in the head.
However, after being in a coma for years, she recovers and goes out on her path of revenge.
What we don't know at the start, is that in fact that The Bride is an assassin and Bill is her boss. They are also in love with one another (in a very strange love way - not your let's cuddle up in front of the TV kind of way), but 'B' (Uma) discovers that she is expecting his child whilst she is on an assassin mission, and her outlook changes in that moment. She decides that she can no longer perform the role of assassin, nor can she tell Bill that she is pregnant, as she will then belong to him. So she just disappears. For a while Bill thinks that she has been killed on her last assignment and mourns her, then he decides he wants the person who has killed 'B' dead, and so he starts to investigate her disappearance. It is here that he discovers that not only is she not dead, but that she is getting married and is expecting a baby.
He says at this news he 'overreacts', and along with the rest of his team of assassins, kills the entire wedding party.
The story of The Brides revenge is one of blood, gore and samurai swords. The fighting scenes are fantastic, even if totally unbelievable at times; but come on, this is a Tarantino film, it is bound to be a bit way out!
The revenge is spread over the course of 2 DVD's, the first of the two being the more violent in my opinion. The second giving more of the story. But the end has a twist that you do not see coming. I won't tell you what it is just in case you haven't already seen Kill Bill, as it would spoil the surprise.
Overall, I love the way this film has been shot. I think the story line is great, and I think the character that Uma Thurman plays is fantastic!
A great movie!
