“Great car when they actually work the way they should”

★★★☆☆

written by on 25/11/2012

Firstly they are a good car when everything is fine..but those times are few and far between IMO. Rattles are a pain in the cabin..the simplest DIY on them is a nightmare..you have to drop the bumper to change a headlight bulb! Parts are expensive..and theres always a light on for some reason or another? The latest issue is a xenon near side headlight failure which will mean back into the auto electrician to see what the actual problem is? If Im being total honest I love the car..but I would not buy another..just not worth the hassle or cost.

Got the car on 14feb12. 16feb hub has to be replaced. Umpteen coils have been put in but two days after the light is on again. The window motors have now both gone and the handbrake lever button has broken. Been told its a spring inside but Renault will only sell full part at approx £300!! Now it has a full system electronic failure so now needs an ecu. Great! We've only had it 6 months and I wish I'd never clapped eyes on it. Truely a bad experience. I would never buy or even consider buying another Renault. Nothing but trouble

“electrics, electrics, electrics, getting the point”

owned 10 months, it's a 2004, with 62000 miles (never know how it managed those miles) full dealer service history. Great car when it works, when it works is the key point. esp is a disaster engine managment is also a disaster coil packs, well you be aswell just ordering them every month from the dealer. service light on all the time, take it for a service, 10 miles later the light will be back on. door seals, chewing gum will last longer and do a better job than the renault ones. All that said when it works, it really works and your smile will be ear to ear. Took mines to garage today, needing loads done again!! the work needed is greater than the cars value, if i had somewhere to store it i would strip it down and sell the parts on ebay!! that's how bad it is. avoid like the plague. Under no circumstances purchase this model, there are plenty of simaler motors to chose from civic type r, golf r32, impreza sti, etc

Written on: 15/02/2012

Hi. Never had a problem with ESP, engine management or coil packs. Service light come on before the service (as it should). Have had to replace window regulators a couple of times but Renault (talk to customer services) gave me a 90% discount. Would have been free but paying something meant I got 12 month guarentee. OK, it's a renault so when it goes wrong it will cost you, on the other hand when it goes well it will put a bigger smile on your face than almost anything else.

Amsterdaz's Response to r32fifer's Review

Written on: 28/11/2012

Hi

No problems at all since February except a cracked alloy, which cost me a measly £140 to replace. I went through it a bit at the end of last year with stub axle - first one, then the other. Still doing 27-28 mpg most of that is done driving in and out of Cambridge during rush hour. Trip at night on A roads I will get 30-33 depending on how quickly I want to get there.

It's a fun car with all the gadgets including brilliantly placed audio controls (my BMW has then on the steering wheel! It keeps moving. Try to turn down when not going straight is a nightmare). The air con is much, much better than in my BMW too.

I am a bit of a Renault man. I had a 5 turbo for nearly 20 years. This was the first (of many cars I drove) that excited me more. Another great car was the 21 turbo - now that could shift!

Got the cash - get the car.

I'd love to hear if you go ahead.

PS - I've given up Renault garages.

DON'T buy this car! Or a Reanult for that matter! I would never buy another Renualt, the parts are so expensive and this car has just been one massive nightmare! It started when the wheel kept pulling, I had to have a hub replaced which cost £1000, then the electrics started playing up and my dash lit up like Blackpool! The electrics are dodgy and keeps saying something's wrong when it isn't. My other hub now needs replacing and there's a clicking when the wheel is turned... very loud! the steering rack now needs to be replaced! I paid close to £7000 a year ago and today I was offered £2500 by a garage who knew the repairs would be pricey! Renault parts are triple the cost of other makes. Such a let down.

Hired this car to get to a wedding. It had done 10000 miles and i can't comment on the previous service history etc. But after leaving the airport noticed the lights were on, although off on the console. After 30 mile realised the indicators were intermitantly working. then randomly jammed on left turn.
windscreen wipers did a similar thing.
Was not impressed.
Appart from this was nice to drive, just glad I was hiring and not buying.
Also can't comment on the value for money so gave it neutral.

ive had my megane sport for a few months now! and so far its been brilliant. its great for the family and when im alone its brilliant on performance and speed. i think they look fantastic a deffo eye turner when goin through towns. fuel can be pricey when u put the pedal down, regarding tyres i deffo think u have to go for a gud make on a car like this or it will b pointless driving it, which again could cost a bit.

“If you are thinking of buying a Renault 225 Sport,...”

written by on 05/08/2009

If you are thinking of buying a Renault 225 Sport, don't do it. I chopped in a Subaru Imprezza for one of these heaps, a decision i have regretted on many occasions.
In 17 months it's been into the dealers 4 times all for electrical problems. I have owned it from new and it now has 14.500 miles on the clock. All the work has been done under warranty but thats not the point is it.
Ive got a test drive booked in a Focus ST.
I can't wait to see the back of the Renault!

“Love it. Mine is the Renault Megane Trophy version....”

★★★★★

written by Amsterdaz on 11/12/2008

Love it. Mine is the Renault Megane Trophy version. Hardy lost anything in depreciation in the 18 months I've had it. Bought for 11,500 in may 2007. If you buy new you're going to loose money on any car.
Noticed some other reviews says eats tires and bad fuel economy. Can be true, but if you limit your fun you can make tires and fuel go a long way. I average close to 30mpg and I've had the tyres for more than 12,000 and still have 3mm.
Let it rip and fuel will go down to 20mpg or less.

30 mpg , lol your having a laugh, 22 mpg driving like a nun is more realistic, let rip and your down to 11mpg, whats the point writing a review if your not honest. Anyway peeps don't buy this car based on mpg or ins group either. If mpg is your thing there's plenty of good diesels about.

Following yesterday's comments I checked the trip computer. Approx 100 miles motorway (M11, M25) and 4 x 6-mile trips into and out of centre of Cambridge at rush hour the figures are: 155.2 miles, 31.3 mph average, 31.4 mpg. I think the average for the motorway trip was in the 36s.

Since writing original review I have had problems with front suspension. First the off-side started squeeking when turning. I had to replace a whole load of parts including the stub axles and put a £1000 whole in my pocket. Three months later the other side left another £1000 hole.

Didn't I say I was a nun? Seriously, I do get 28-30 mpg. I don't drive slowly, just ask my wife or check out the holes in the side of the passenger seat where she hangs on. Average 80 on the motorways (in Germany of coarse) and I'll get 30+. Never has my average over 100+ miles gone below 25. Has f32fifer got hole in tank?

This car has almost bankrupted me! It eats tyres so expect to spend £500+ on tyres every 13k miles. Rubbish on fuel economy, high insurance & the tax is creeping up every year ( £210 this year).
Oh and in the 3 years I've owned it, I've lost £10k in depreciation alone. Check your local renault dealer out - mine are very skilled at trying to rip you off and shoddy work....but done with a smile of course! A lot of fun at a VERY high price. If you can afford to spend that much cash, am sure there's better cars to be had.

Buy a Renault Megane and be amazed. Unfortunately I bought a lemon and it's taken me 4 months for my dealer to agree to find me a replacement, so fingers crossed. Had rear suspension failure (repaired) steering difficulties (they replaced every component on off side front) trouble with gearbox (they eventually agreed to replace that) turbo failure recently so they have now agreed to replace the car for a newer year with less mileage....RESULT

Had the Renault Megane over a year and absolutely love it.
Great performance and for me a great mix of comfort and handling.
If you want a car that can handle and is nice to drive on longer trips, this is the hot hatch to have. Styling is subtle so others drivers always try it on at traffic lights! The book says 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds, i've done in 5.9!
Has a cd changer, auto lights, auto wipers, folding mirrors, dipping rear view mirror, typre pressure monitors all standard, as well as keyless entry and start!
In my opinion, a very under rated car that out performs many, especailly those that are dependant on heritage....GOLF!! Left a R32 standing, not to mention a Civic type R, A3 3.2 and S3!
