Having Had A 7 Inch Portable Dvd Player Previous T
Having had a 7 inch portable dvd player previous to purchasing A
Technosonic DVP 1010 I was really looking forward to taking this on the regular 2hrs 40 flight I make to the Algarve.
It did not let me down, the Screen size made a big difference (viewed by my wife also in the next seat). I use Shure sound isolating headphones which were great on this player (available separately for about £35 a set but worth the purchase).
The remote enabled me to change the display etc so that I could see watched time and remaining video time which on a flight is very important as they cabin crew stop you using the DVD player during take of and landing, but I got 2hrs 10 of playing time on this flight, and the battery still had another 50 mins or so power left.
In the hotel I watched the player both on my lap using the speakers inbuilt, and also outputted to the Hotel TV (although I did need to take an extension to alow me to connect the red, white and yellow female connectors from the AV lead to a male red, white and yellow lead with a scart plug on the end, this is not included but can be picked up from maplins / cpc stores for about £5.
I liked the ability to charge the battery separately without having it connected to the DVD player. What I did was pick up a similar voltage power charger and connected that to the battery, leaving me with the provided charger to plug directly into the DVD player when I wanted to both watch a DVD but still be charging the battery for portable use.
To summarise go buy this player... but for your enjoyment I recommend getting the following extras
1) A connecting lead for the A/V output so that you could output to a TV.
2) Pick up a universal charger (under £10) so that you can charge the battery at the same time as watching a DVD
3) Invest in a set of Shure headphones if you are going to be using in a noisy environment (plane, train etc) as it drowns out crying babies, chatty passengers and enhances the experience of watching a DVD.
Thank you for this informative post.

What I Like About The Technosonic Dvp 1010: G
What I like about the Technosonic DVP 1010:
Good price, £150 from ToysRUs, please don't tell me I paid too much!
Big screen, suppose to be 10" wide screen, haven't - checked but it's big.
Plays dvd -r/rw,+r/rw, music CDs, mpegs, jpegs, VCDs, SVCDs, CD-r/rw - everything I have.
Battery lasts for at least 2 hours on continuous use - had to stop watching after that but the battery was still going strong.
Sound is loud enough for a car.
Comes with car poweradapter and bag with car mounting straps - they work but a bit messy.
Bought from a high street shop - toysrus.
Didn't Like
Audio line out is strange - changing volume on unit changes output volume - so need to put on max but the sound still comes out of the speakers - very odd.
Nothing to tell you how much power is left on battery.
Can't use the battery when the unit is laid flat as it stick out the back and is in the way.
Don't think it has slow motion (not bothered really).
Doesn't like it if there are too many jpegs on a disk - over 250 I think, not a lot really.
Comment
Haven't used this too much, only had it less than a week.
Seems okay, saw a crack in the hinge area so took it back to toysrus and got an exchange no problem- imagine what a hassle an online shop would be.
Haven't fully explored it so I will come back sometime and add more in a comment.
The lid catch mechanism is just a lump of plastic sticking out of the lid and a corresponding one on the frame, that's it, it just depends on the flexibility of the unit to push past the obstruction and then stay there. This works just fine but I feel a bit worried, what happens when it wears down?? or if the door hinge becomes loose??
Has a remote - but uses one of those *expensive* button lithium batteries.
The player's lithium battery is a clip on affair, not great but okay. Glad it's lithium as I think they are the better ones.
Can't use the battery if you are sticking this onto the back of someones headrest as the battery clips onto the back of the unit so the lid/screen can't open flat.
Big enough for two children to share and still be able to see (but I bought it for myself).
It's a bit big, thickness wise I mean.
The battery is huge, I'm worried it might start a fire if it shorts out!!!
It's a top loader by the way.
It's only region 2 and I can't find a way to change it on the internet, phoned the helpdesk and they currently doen't have anything either, they suggested phoning at a later date as they update their database as info rolls in (national charge telephone number apparently) - bummer, I've got region 4 disks too.
Finally
Pretty pleased with it really, price is good but I'm sure things will get cheaper in time but for now it's cheap.
Hope this is useful to you.
I'll be back with a follow up at a later date.
Forgot - The picture quality, it's okay or even good with bright or normal scenes but with dark or night scenes it's terrible, no detail in the shadows.
There's no colour control either, just a brightness control - the colour is a little bit too rich really, but I can live with it.
I guess it's a cheap screen.
I could have got a 10.2" screen from a brand name for £300 I guess.
Also watch out for the shop displays with a cartoon running, it doesn't show you anything except that the unit works. Get a demo with people in it.
Bye again.

Hello micky69, no, it's still going strong.
The flimsy door catch is still going strong, looks like it will outlast the laser.
I still use it in the car.
There seems to be very few 10" screens on the market, in the shops at least, but the ones I've seen have come down to about £120 - £130.
Bye.
Hiya Vinny, How is your machine doing mate?, We haven't had any updates for ages pal and a few of my mates have been getting a bit worried like, hope all is fine and dandy in your land of portable DVD Players and it hasn't bust or owt, fingers crossed.

Player still working fine and haven't seen anything more desireable that I would want to change to.
Using it on and off still and it's still useful.
I find I'm not using the battery or remote at all.
I'm surprised that these type of products haven't come down in price, they are holding the price or even going up.
Regards
