Great family show, but not only for children. All ages can enjoy it! Very strong cast. New songs as goog as original ones. Danielle Hope has a wondefful presence on stage and a good, tender voice. Michael Crawford is truly legeng, his Wizard is brilliant! Witch of the West has a great song at the begining of act 2. And a little dog Toto- very nice and fun!

A far cry from the traditional musical we all know and love,
This all singing and all dancing show has been touring the north.
The only links with the story where the character naames and the land
of Oz. New characters included the keeper of the rainbow and scraps the
rebel munchkin who played a sort of Judas role which seemed more or
less useless.
The songs were fair but nothing catchy enough to remember on the way
home in the car, the dancing was amazing, Props and set were limited
The show starts as Dorothy is an overworked underpaid waitress at a
Diner in Kansas, who goes looking for her dog (and never actually finds
it) Gets caught up in a storm and ends up in Oz,
The munchkins are overgrown but with great costumes
Ozma is replaced by Ozzima incedently a man :-|
The scarecrow is a Hippie
The wicked witch is a goth
The Yellow brick road is non existant
The cowardly Lion is played well with a very excellent voice,
Some scenes are based on 50's rock others in todays pop style a lot made
up of ballads.
The show all in all is aimed at children, and peopel unfamiliar with
the story or at people who don't mind giving up the historic version
for a few hours.
"Scraps" the munchkin seems to be overrated and is pointless apart from
the face she is played by the young child starlet from "Tracey Beaker"
and an attempt at crowd pulling
Glinda was very talented and Dorothy was very talented at dancing,
Gym was also used in the production to symbolise the Winds
But if you were expecting to see a traditional retelling of the story
we all love don't bother.
I am really suprised the palace theatre even entertained letting them perform !

We thought we had bought tickets to see the Wizard of Oz at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, however, if we had looked more closely at the small print below the title, we would have realised that it was actually the Wizard of Oz, 'Beyond the Rainbow'. After seeing the original film more than 100 times, we were extremely excited at the prospect of watching the musical, however we should have left at the start when it became clear that Dorothy was now older and worked in a bar called the Red Shoe. The stage consisted of 4 boxes, which were turned around every so often to depict a different scene, the costumes looked like homemade fancy dress outfits, and apart from Dorothy, the Munchkins and a Witch, the musical bore no resemblance to the original, and was actually more like a badly performed Pantomime. This was a complete waste of money, and we were thoroughly disappointed. It should have been clearly advertised that this was completely different from the original film. Seeing musicals such as this one at the Palace Theatre, has made us think carefully about booking tickets for a musical at this theatre in the future.
