Editors, The Back Room is the best guitar album of 2005. In fact the guitar work in this reminds you of early U2. This band will be big. This album is very, very good.

It's really very silly how much I have grown to adore the Editors since I first heard them about 7 months ago. They're a young Birmingham band that sound a bit like Interpol, a bit like Joy Division or the Chameleons or Echo & the Bunnymen or any range of dark, broody, slightly gothic '80's acts. They write melancholic, angry songs that range from the soon to be indie disco classics "Blood" and "Munich" to the quieter and more serene Elbow or Doves-influenced "Fall." They excel at writing both types of numbers.

Their debut album, The Back Room picks up exactly where they left off with their singles and b-sides and it works. It's a very moody and evocative album of dark rooms, failed relationships and walking through rain-soaked streets at midnight.

Editors do sound like a lot of their contemporaries - The Departure, We Are Scientists, The Fever - but their songwriting is far superior and somewhat more diverse.

If you're looking for a modern take on that '80's indie sound (and you like Interpol), then this is a very good place to start.
