Never get a mortgage from Barclays
written by Mariaa233 on 03/05/2017
Never known such a slow service, been a week now, all I needed to know if I can take a parents name off my house deeds. Always get told its hopeful, after making more calls fed up waiting still nothing. I'm supposed to be a loyal customer, hate to think how they would treat a new customer, its a joke.

I rarely post reviews but read so many negative ones about Woolwich/Barclays that I felt it was appropriate to show that they can get it right! AIP on 11th January, formal application (3 hours in branch with mortgage advisor!!) 26th Jan, Valuation instructed 30th Jan, Valuation carried out 2nd Feb by esurv , Offer emailed to me 3rd Feb! Had excellent comms from the mortgage advisor - the track-it system is very patchy though - that could be far better. Highly recommended!

We have finally managed through a broker to take out the best mortgage possible from Barclays / Woolwich at a very competitive rate. The journey was absolutely perfect as I was kept informed about the progress and finally completed today. Thank you Barclays for helping us buy our dream home. Fantastic service!!

Straightforward remortgage to buy a house. Initial mortgage offer made 2 months ago. Weeks late now in completing thanks to the utterly unprofessional behaviour of the mortgage and so-called 'completion' team in Mumbai. I'm chasing, my solicitor is chasing, my mortgage broker is chasing all to no avail. Barclays couldn't care less, and my vendors have run out of patience and are about to pull out. Never ever bother to try to get a mortgage from these woefully inadequate people - way too stressful and an expensive waste of time and money. I'll have wasted 3 months, paid £2k to the solicitor and £750 for a survey only to furiously and helplessly watch our dream home slip away. Barclays should be banned from being involved in the mortgage business. Avoid at all costs!!

My BTL business model is to buy run down properties, turn them into nice homes and rent them out. I have an excellent credit rating and have never had any issues getting a mortgage. Tempted by Barclays "Great Escape" offer, I applied to remortgage a property to release some equity to buy another property. Barclays mortgage arm is the Woolwich, and they sent a surveyor round from Countrywide. The surveyor reported an issue that was not highlighted by my previous lender and will not be difficult or expensive to fix. However, instead of making this a condition of the mortgage as I would have expected, they have refused the mortgage altogether. My Barclays bank manager has asked if this was the only issue and they have confirmed that is was. This makes no sense to me and rules out the Woolwich as a potential BTL lender as the properties I buy will usually require some remedial work. Other lenders understand and accommodate this.

The re-mortgage process took 2 months to complete, which saw me incur extra charges on my old mortgage account. They quoted £35 for a transfer fee, then charged £37.50. They failed to get an accurate redemption statement which meant I had to pay some back - that comes off my 5% repayment allowance per year. I had to go through a frustrating automated service and ended up with someone in India who spent 10 mins following a script in order before answering my question. Extremely disappointing.

I have never known a mortgage to take so long to sort out. I decided today to look up what others were saying about Woolwich. It was no surprise that they have many disgruntled customers. They may have good deals but communication is poor. I applied for a mortgage on 3rd of December 2015 and went down the telephone interview route. All seemed good, sorted within a week, but then I heard nothing I phoned up, and after being transferred through number of auto messages, I was told that I hadn't completed the paperwork. What Paperwork??? It was clarified, so I sent payslips again... Waited again.... nothing. I telephoned to ask what had happened to my mortgage that had been confirmed. They needed more paperwork! It is now April, they need more paperwork but not from me from over 18's in my family. Was anyone planning on telling me? Apparently they sent them a letter... They had no clue what it was. I sorted this out last week and posted it 1st class. TODAY I receive a duplicate letter to accept the mortgage which I have already signed and accepted. My daughters receive another letter to sign which they have already done. SOoo I phoned today, yes they want more paperwork...but they were about to advance the money, so I thought last week because I had an email to say so! What happened to personalised banking! Feeling exasperated. nearly 5 months of the two year plan has already been spent in finalising the details. Deflated I am!

The mortgage team is by far the worst. After all processes were completed in record time, the money was supposed to be reflected int eh solicitors account which the solicitor never got the 4 days easter holidays was a big pain. We are still struggling to figure out where ht emoney is! what a waste! and their call center takes abt 40 mins to get through! They blamed the solicitor but they inturn blamed the solicitor that they never answered calls or responded to notifications. What a lie!

We were in the process of taking out a buy to let mortgage on a studio apartment. We've gone through the application and the usual pain of providing loads of personal details. They have requested an additional paperwork as one of the applicant was self-employed. We provided the information to them within 30 mins however it has taken them days to review and confirm if it's sufficient. Our broker at this point made a complaint as she was just not getting anywhere with them. Finally, they confirmed all paperwork is in order and the underwriting has been done. We received a text confirming that the valuation will be done 4 working days later. Well that actually turned into 11 working days and at no point they felt the need to tell us about the delay even though it was nothing to do with not having access to the property. As we were chasing them to find out the status they kept saying the mortgage offer will be in place within 48 hours. After both our broker and us were ringing them and we were getting different answers. As many times as you ring up you get different answers - it's a joke. We were then told they have received the valuation and the mortgage offer will be done by close of play but 2 days later there was still no sign of it. The next day we got the valuation which stated that the property doesn't meet the lending criteria therefore no offer can be made. The same day our broker was told that it will be done by close of business and was shocked when we sent her the valuation report. At that point we logged our 3rd complaint. We got a call back 2 days later and straight away they were blaming my broker as she shouldn't have submitted the application - when I asked about internal validation I got silence at the end of the phone. To top it all off our broker reviewed their lending criteria which doesn't mention anywhere that they do not offer btl mortgage on a studio apartment so it seems like they make up their rules on a fly. When we requested copy of all the call records and copy of the conversations I was required to make a payment to get the information. We’re yet to research in more detail but we are sure we've heard of freedom of information somewhere! Their complaints procedure is a joke. We have been given a 3 months window for them to resolve our complaint but all that time our money is in the mortgage product. Keep well away unless you are missing stress in your life.

Having read the reviews on here after applying to Barclays I was really concerned about the whole process. However I've had a great experience with them to be fair. I applied over the phone and have just been approved with the mortgage offer in the post. All done and dusted within 14 days. Perhaps I've just been lucky. I made sure all finances were tidy and in order before applying and checked my credit score, which was 999 out of 999 with experian. Feel really sorry for all you guys who've had problems and continue to have problems but they've been great with my application.

the stress which these lenders did for me and my family is unforgivable.

Be aware everyone Woolwich Mortgage from Barclays will provide you the worst time of your life. They will make you wait for 1 month and then give you the bad news. They will check the last 6 years of your credit history. If you have a few delayed credit card payments in the last 6 years forget it... they won't give you anything.

Having been banking with them for over 20 years now, I foolishly decided to go to 'my bank' for a BTL re-mortgage fixed product - which most financial institutions see it as a pretty simple 'transaction'. It has now been three months and yet I have no mortgage offer. My experience of these shoddy 'mortgage advisors/experts' has been absolutely horrendous. My list of complaint is endless but to give you a gist of what I have endured in the last three months: they lost paper work (deed papers to be precise), they do not communicate between themselves i.e. mortgage advisors and the underwriters (they pretend as though they work in different businesses/organisations), they cant organise a simple valuation (until I intervened),most of the times it was like ground hog day as we kept going over the same grounds and the same process over and over again and again, all because according to them 'some time had lapsed' between the original application and now - SO WHOSE FAULT IS THAT THEN? I will be changing my bank and will formalise my complaint. This experience has taken up so much of my time, which I will not get back. Stay away from them. They are INCOMPETENT in every way. In my original conversation with this useless company, was to ask them HOW LONG WILL THIS PROCESS TAKE? they told me as this was 'straight forward' and it shouldn't take more than a month. However, it now feels like pulling teeth and I have decided to walk away as I cannot bear to deal with them as they are causing me stress and aggro, which I can do without. IF I COULD GIVE THEM A SCORE OR RATING BELOW ZERO OR TERRIBLE THEN I WOULD DO!

Trying to settle mortgage following the death of my husband an absolute nightmare and while other companies have been helpful and compassionate the Woolwich just seem to want to put obstacles in your way. Their call centre is probably the worst I have ever come across and there have been a few! If it is frustrating talking to the machine to try and get to the right department it is even more frustrating when you finally get to speak to an operator - what part of I don't have a fax is difficult to grasp?? Anyway they don't appear to want to issue a settlement figure so I have just cancelled direct debit and see what happens!

We filled in the forms totally correctly. We were due to complete on the Friday; on the Wednesday our solicitor went to draw down the funds but they refused to release them as a new condition suddenly appeared which we could not meet so we were unable to complete. It is impossible to find anyone knowledgeable to speak with, even our solicitor could find no one to speak with in their legal department. Eventually our broker used her contact and the problem was sorted and we completed three weeks later after a lot of stress - actually there was no problem in the first place just some jobs worth not understanding what was going on.I would never ever use or recommend Woolwich to anyone. There customer service is dreadful.

We ended our last mortgage with Nationwide and decided to go with Barclays because they offered a good deal. What a mistake! We are now selling our house and buying a cheaper one but the whole process is being jeopardise by Woolwich. They are disorganised and incompetents. They loose papers we send them, don't seem to communicate between them about your process, keep asking for different things when you speak to someone different from your previous call and are very slow to return calls. We are about to loose our buyers and pull out of the house we are buying because of Woolwich. It's very frustrating and not even their Line Manager is able to make things any better. Full frustration and definitely never going to recommend them to anybody.

Trying to port a mortgage was the biggest nightmare ive ever had in the end I had to pay £3000 in exit fees to get away from their terrible service or face losing the house I was buying. I would recommend everyone to stay well away they just lie, palm you off and don't have enough staff to do the job . By far the worst company I have ever used.

We are going through a very similar situation. They are useless. Asked by the line manager for a piece of paper that was already sent to them a week ago and copied in an email to him. Now being told they lost it. We have been calling them almost everyday in the last month and are about to loose our buyers for the delay in the selling process thanks to Woolwich. Very disorganised and incompetent!

Totally agree.
Over 2 months waiting for a mortgage, no one can give a straight answer. Keep on stretching the time via days.
Never again with them.
I advised anyone, who ever lender you decide to go with but not with woolwich.
