Hi I bought a vw 1.4 polo just under 12 mths ago the car had to go back the next day as it was found to be covered in railway fillings this was due to being parked next to a railway siding awaiting dispatch to the customer which took 3 days to be done it then went for its first service and two days after the steering pump went not that it was anything to do with the service but not good for a car just under the year in age I think they are really bad for rear leg room over priced at £15000,00 and although it is the age it is I was going to trade it in but can't afford to its in first. Class condition but only worth £8000 so they loose value very quick as well would never buy another vw I'd rather burn my money

2nd service in 3 years and the rear discs are shot. 200 quid to fix. NOT impressed. Apparently this is a known problem with VW using shoddy parts.

i love our new polo tdi, has very easy handling, conservative design, comfortable seats, nice heavy doors and not costly on diesel. However, like any good diesel engine, it gets a bit noisy on low gear, road noise is also a bit high on the freeways, the side mirrors are a little bit too small and VW has the worst customer service i know.. that said though i would still recommend this car to anyone, it's a reliable little car.

Please think twice before to buy VW polo and search youtube and learn how DSG problems will make your life terrible and some other problems like constant wind noise and steering inbalance problems are very common within VW polo owners

I previously had a WV Polo 1liter petrol and I was very happy with it, I changed it for WV Polo 1.4 TDI and I love it. Everything abaut the car i like, the shape of it, performance, torch, driving position, everithing. The only thing is a little noisy at low speed, however is normal in diesel engine. The diesel consuption is great, so overall Im very happy and I enjoy everyday being in the car.

Hi although I love our new car it has been back in to the garage three times with faults, and now a serious electronic one, their customer service is terrible and I really feel that they don't care wheather I am a happy customer or not, I don't know when I am getting the car back, as they don't call as according to them they are to busy. I really shouldn't have a new car that has been back to the garage this many times.

Report on a new V W Polo 1.4 Petrol - 59 reg. Metalic Black hatch very good from driving point of view. Very responsive steering & good brakes. Engine suffers on hills & you need to be back in 3rd gear or you loose speed. We are however having a problem with flaking paintwork around bonnet edge. This is on the drivers side at the windscreen end. There seems so be 3 different places where the bonnet paintwork edge has been "touched up" during factory final inspection. 2 areas are at the windscreen edge & another around the front edge where the V W grill badge is located. One of these areas is now flaking off close to the drivers wiper blade & arm, but we have not caused this damage ourselves. More fragments flake off the more we drive the car. Estimated mileage to date is 1,500 miles. V W seem reluctant to accepting a faulty paintwork warrenty claim. We have checked several other new unregistered V W cars at our local dealership & have found 2 cars where there is signs of rough paintwork "touching up" around the edges of their bonnets. These were a Fox & a Golf. Has anyone else experienced this rather unfortunate problem. This is our 1st V W ownership, & the UK based V W's unhelpful customer care response to our problem has made us wonder if we have made a wise choice of car purchase. Finally, we felt we could not recommend any V W cars to our freinds, because of what looks like a commom paintwork manufacturing problem. Please send any helpful replies to support our claim to :- [email protected] or call us on 07825 382428. Thank you. John Quick. (posted 20th July 2010).

VW Polo 1.4tdi Bluemotion 1. This car is really lovelly to drive and has taken us, regularly, up to North Scotland from West Devon 70mpg at 70mph ... amazing. We forked out the extra money to buy the most fuel efficient vw we could, however it the alloy wheels let grit through to the disc brakes and the drum brakes to (screws up functioning of the ABS). I got a three year servicing deal and discovered that only includes a visual check of brakes so I have had to go back five times and fight my corner to get the brakes fixed. But if you stick to your guns you can break through and my main dealer did respond. I got this car because it is meant to be tough ... just not on bumpy dirty minor roads.

Had the car two days when the fuel pump died the car had covered 26 miles, that said VW were extremely good, the car was back on the road the next day. Very spacious, well equipped and a real pleasure to drive. I am not interested in torque or speed if I was I woudl have bought something more punchy. It works fine for me.

I bought a 1.4TDI match a year ago and do motorway miles mostly. I suppose the one issue the cars have is the front of the dash where there airvents are to de-mist you windows do cause issues, in that when the sun shines off it there is a major glare on the windscreen which is dis-concerting and off-putting when you are tyring to concentrate hard on the road ahead and at the end of a 40 min drive you can be left with very tired eyes and a very sore head. Ive just had the tube to the rear windscreen washer come off, but the car is just due its first service!!!
Other than that its totally reliable and manages 500miles on 1 fill-up. I hope VW can do something about the glare as it would be one thing that would put me off again in the future.

My Polo Dune 1.4TDI recently went in for its first oil change on long life servicing. I was astounded and upset to find that immediately after the oil change the oil was still a filthy black colour; full of carboniferous contamination. I complained and the oil was changed for a second time in my full view. The Main VW dealer said they only follow VW Germany instructions on servicing. We have all seen the TV addvertisements about how superior VW cars are in build and manufacture. I would have thought it was a 'no-brainer' that customers rightly expect a clean, honey coloured oil immediately after an oil change; having paid £200.00 for an oil change that takes about 15 minutes; that's right I witnessed this myself!

I changed my 1.2 petrol Polo for a 1.4TDI SE in September last year and couldn't believe the difference the change in engine has made to what was already an excellent and reliable car.
Every drive is a pleasure, I paid a bit more than I wanted to but the extra power and specification including 8-speaker stereo etc. make it an easy car to enjoy.
It was serviced after 10,000 miles last month using the 3 year VW plan. I've had no faults/problems whatsoever to report apart from a replacement tyre at 8,000 but I can't blame VW for the rusty nail in the road.
Fuel consumption ranges from 44.6mpg-58.2mpg since new, I expected and was promised by the salesman better fuel consumption but I'm possible enjoying the extra power a bit too much.

l have a 2009 VW Polo. A great car allround, great finish, comfortable etc.....except for one problem.... it pulls to the left! I've taken it back to the dealer for a wheel alignment and they said 'there's nothing they can do as it's aligned to VW specifications'. l was told that 'its the camber in the road'. l have had a variety of independant people drive this car and they're all surprised at how it pulls to the left. My old car is actually easier to steer.
l suspect that on a German road it would drive like an arrow, but we drive on the other side Mr Volkswagen, so make the adjustment!

Volkswagen Polo 1.4TDI is a well built big little car. Good fuel economy.

Just part-exchanged my Peugeot 206 2003 1.4 for Volkswagen Polo 1.4TDI 55 reg and I am very pleased with fuel consumption & the turbo gives the car a real kick. Fun to drive & nice to handle. So far so good. Much stronger than the Peugeot which felt like a flimsy tin can! So safety wise, it's alot better.
I've yet to discover any problems with it...

I'd advise anyone to try out the new polo match that I ' ve recently purchased. I got the 3dr VW Polo match hatchback 1.4 tdi diesels in metallic black on a 58 plate. It looks really good inside and out (even down to the blue dials and leather steering wheel and gear stick) it even has a little sport look too so my boyfriend loves it as well! The inside is very spacious and comfortable, (the feeling of space is similar to what you ' d feel in a bmw x5) with the best looking black and grey interior to what I ' ve seen Volkswagen do in my opinion. The only down side is how much it costs (mine came to around £11,500) but when you take into account the low tax, low insurance, low fuel consumption and how it makes you feel to drive it all levels itself out. Its so sturdy and safe feeling (especially in comparison to my Fiat Punto yr2000 that I had before). It has such a smooth drive and has the boost of the turbo, giving it that sporty edge. What I ' d advise anyone to do is to go and test drive one and you'll know instantly if it ' s for you or not. A year ago I had a very similar polo as a hire car and have wanted one every since! It ' s a much understated classic little car and I love mine.

Not sure if £11,500 is worth spending on a polo, when the earlier model around 2001/2002 has the same engine, perks etc for less than half that £££. But each to their own. Vw's do give a nice solid feel compared to other cars, seem compared to the equivalent ford fiesta tdci that suffer huge probs with injector seals the vw is the best bet

If pride is worth more than happiness, then the VW Polo is for you.
It makes me feel more content in comparison to what else I could have bought for the money.
Driving it is surprisingly fun. I used to own a 52reg Mini Cooper S, which was great in performance. This 75bhp diesel Polo is not far behind, and the handling is pretty fun.
In comparison to say a Nissan Micra, it feels substantial. Better quality platics all round and unfussy layout actually place it in a class above and set new standards for quality in other super minis.
Economy ? Strange one this. VW claims 60.1mpg. I reckon I'm averaging 54mpg using a light foot (Surprising my Cooper S used to average 49mpg with a light foot (a tribute also to it's 6th gear).
Overall - I have mixed feelings with this car. In times of high fuel prices, it provides an extra comfort feeling that I'm not wasting so much in fuel as my previous cars (but then that encourages me to drive it more often..).
It's a solid buy, but I never tend to smile when I'm in this car.... A Nissan Micra which has a lower quality feel, does however. Sometimes cheaper can be more cheerful...

exactly my feeling with cars, when i have a nice car i always hanker for a cheaper one as i tend to worry about it going wrong, ie expensive, and it getting damaged etc, cheap is cheerful and you laugh at rattles whereas a expensive car it annoys you and makes you feel negative!
I have a saxo vts which despite figures claiming 34.8mpg, in actual fact it averages around 38-40mpg with normal driving, sometimes 42mpg, never less than 36mpg. So i was looking forward to 60mpg with a polo, but i've read a few reviews now where mpg is more 53-55mpg, not a great deal more than 42mpg is it?!? In reality, i will get maybe £1200 for my 2000 w-reg saxo vts, a 2001 polo will be around £2400, so if i keep it 2 years i save £360 on tax, 12k a year=24k in 2 years=£3160 petrol(38mpg+£1.10/litre) compared to £2260 diesel(54mpg+1.12/litre) so a saving of £900 on fuel, insurance for the saxo vts is group 14 and £346 a year compared to £200 for a polo, so 2 years a saving of £292. TOTAL saved in 2 years=£1552. If i spend the extra £1200 to buy a polo in the first place, then 2 years i've saved myself only £352, £176 a year. Not much, eh?

Noisy, painfully underpowered and drab compared to other cars in its field. Mine is a company car, and i do high mileage, after one year the engine and clutch needed replacing on warranty luckily.
One good point though, the engine seems to run solely off air!

I currently own a 1.4TDI Sport 80ps and it is outstanding. Vastly superior build quality than European rivals, and more subdued interior than more plastic offerings. I use it in London, and to go to Wales every other week, cruises fine at 85, it's just great. It is a lot slower than my previous Renault 1.4 Privilege, but that practically fell apart, and broke down several times whilst under warranty.
Not sure what other similar cars people are comparing this with, but you know, residuals speak for themselves.

Good little hatch! Better drive and ride than the fiesta but looks a little bit too cute, for my liking. Haven't had any faults as yet, but dreading the day because the VW dealerships are not pleasant people to deal with once you have bought the car from them.

great review, the bad points are ones that tend to get overlooked so thanks for noting them, and also the lack of torque at low revs could be an annoyance, tho the number of times this will affect me will be very minimal. But is another excellent point to note. Thanks

I really like this Volkswagen Polo 1.4TDI but the window problem causes me great concern.
Written on: 26/11/2007
A word of warning - my Polo TDi was just over 3 years old when one day, I was going out, put the electric windows down only for them to stay down. The result was an emergency trip to my VW dealer (who I'd never used due to their prices and attitude) and to be lumped with a bill for nearly £500

It needed a new window wiring loom - apparently, this is a known fault with VW's but they're just not interested. The part only cost £116, the rest was labor at over £100 an hour plus VAT - no wonder I've now switched to Toyota

All diesel engines turn the oil black within seconds of starting the engine. No diesel will have clean oil once the engine has been started, this is just a fact of life. I have serviced my own cars for years, and have currently got 4 diesels - even when I change the oil myself and put lovely golden stuff in, after running the engine 20 seconds to fill up the filter and dip for a level check, the oil is black - so don't blame the dealer who serviced your car for something they couldn't have helped. Bet you've never owned a diesel before, right? With petrol engines you can expect golden oil for thousands of miles after a change - with diesels, forget it.
