Had time to spare between house viewings and happened to pass through Cuxham. Stopped at the Half Moon pub / restaurant for a light bite and enjoyed their delicious garlic bread with mushrooms and onions. Will definitely revisit if in the area. Thank you

We had a really nice time. The food was great and the service was fantastic. We will definitely be returning for dinner. Can't recommend this place enough. If you are in the are, go check it out!

I used to absolutely love this place, it was the best pub food I have ever tried, and I used to go there often. But since the new owners took it over it really has lost the magic. It is pretentious, not particularly good food, expensive and the portions are tiny. We went with a group of 15 and the owners didn't make us feel welcome at all. We were the only ones in there on a Saturday afternoon so I can't imagine that it will survive for long. I had the pork belly - three small slices of sloppy pork, no crispy crackling and some tasteless celeriac. The cabbage was quite nice, but didn't make up for it. I am someone who really doesn't mind paying for quality, but the new owners seem to think that they can charge the same prices for something which is nothing special- and tiny. The website says:

We were recommended by The Granary Deli in Watlington - Wow! Thank you so much. It was the most memorable, romantic, family friendly and Summery pub ever. The food was divine and the service so friendly and helpful. They even opened the pub a bit early for us to all eat in time so we could see Gifford's Circus in nearby Stadhampton. Will definietly go again for all types of special occasions.

The first time we walked into the Half Moon we knew it was a special place. We were greeted like old friends and made to feel very welcome. The tables are decorated with candles and vases of wild flowers from their garden. We have since dined there on a regular basis and it is our favourite place! We have both travelled all over the country and eaten in some wonderful places but the Half Moon is the best! Well done to them!

We received a very warm & sincere welcome at The Half Moon in Cuxham; not always the case when two little children are in tow. The food was splendid, beautifully presented & special attention was given to providing child -sized portions, not just cut down adult food. The added bonus was that the food was locally sourced and freshly prepared to order. Service was attentive & helpful, so a Sunday family lunch with grandchildren was a delight ... we'll certainly go again.

Ok so get ready for a really awful sickly sweet eulogy, I don't usually write these things but feel moved to do so for this particularly special pub.
It is the best pub you could possibly wish to visit. I have never had such a welcome when visiting a pub and the food is as good as you will get anywhere. There are more and more brilliant pubs now and plenty we love but this is definitely at the top of the list. We do not live nearby but we always stop by if in the area.
They make/grow as much as they can and they create a really imaginative menu with what they have. Take a look at their website for a better feel. Eulogy over!

The Half Moon in Cuxham is a great place. It isn't expensive, and the menu is never the same. A walk round the garden and you will see all the home grown vegetables, and chickens maturing for your plate on your next visit.
I have never had a bad meal in over 50 visits. You do need to book early as there is always limited space.

This place has apparently been transformed by the new "owners" who took over in May 2006. The pub used to be more of a snotty French restaurant, and we, like many other locals avoided the place for entirely that reason. However, having heard that new owners were in place, we pottered down from Watlington, and we were amazed at the quality and choice of food, not to mention the value. They serve some standard gastro-pub classics e.g. moules marinere, which are as good as, if not better, than you would find in trendy spots in London. They also serve interesting modern European dishes, as well as great British roasts and fresh fish dishes. The ingredients appear to be of a high standard, and the portions are large but not overwhelming. The good-claue house wines were also surprisingly good. The deserts are again gasto-pub classics done very well - the sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream is an excellent example. There is also a nice terraced area and long garden at the back for warm-weather dining, and they hold monthly BBQ's, weather permitting, during the summer months. They even do breakfast and brunch at the weekends (although we are yet to try these).
Considering the competition in the South-Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire Chilterns, this pub sets a high standard, and is currently our number-one choice for a tasty, well-cooked, good value meal in a lovely village. Other local gastro-type pubs in the Chilterns, who unfortunately are reducing both their menu choice and standard of cooking, while at the same time increasing prices, would do well to follow the lead of the Half Moon at Cuxham.

The food was fantastic - all cooked to order with really fresh ingredients. The owners have created a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We were a table of 8 that we booked in advance, and we found the service at The Half Moon to be efficient and slick. It's not often you find a restaurant that changes its menu every day (hence the one menu board).
We'll be back as soon as possible!

I really would like to see these people do well. I understand The Half Moon was very busy but the main 3 tables were booked in advance. I know this because we knew people on those tables and they informed us they had made the reservations days ago. The manager / owner should have therefore reviewed their service requirements to accommodate an almost full restaurant.
Having only one blackboard for the menu is crazy. Unless I could order in advance and be assured that the service has improved so that it compliments the quality of the food, I will not be rushing to go again.
Lastly when you enter The Half Moon at Cuxham into Google, you get a selection of web sites, one I believe is there from a previous owners time, given the menu it shows together with the price list, I think this is doing them no favours and they may wish to investigate further as it could deter people for visiting their establishment.

This was my first time eating at The Half Moon and I will be going back. We decided to try somewhere different for my brother's birthday meal. There were 7 of us in total. I'm a very fussy eater so I'm always concerned about trying some where new but I had no trouble finding plenty I like on the menu. The food was wonderful, we had to wait half hour or so for the main meal but to be fair all food is cooked from fresh, so you can't complain when it's quality food. This is a great English friendly pub, just how it should be!!! The current owners have done a great job since recently taking over, and credit to the chef!

The Half Moon at Cuxham - wow! what a find! The tenants have been there since May and have transformed the place. The Half Moon in Cuxham has been transformed by the new owners and it is now a lovely country pub that also serves great food. The service is superb and you will get a genuinely friendly welcome. Open on Mondays for lunch and dinner but only bar nibbles on a Tuesday.

I, my wife, my family, my friends and my colleagues dine at Madoui's at The Half Moon on a regular basis. The food is always first class and the service exceptional. Friendliness comes as standard. Chef Patron Alain is entertaining, friendly and helpful to a fault. The chef skills are evident by the quality of the cuisine. I ask anyone reading the reviews to simply take a drive out to Cuxham and discover for yourself the delights of Madoui's at The Half Moon.

Having been an infrequent but consistent visitor to The Half Moon pub over the past few years we, husband and I, were intrigued to sample the cuisine since the the arrival of the new owners. As a Vegetarian finding character filled restaurants that offer a choice of suitable foods can be troublesome. The Half Moon was a joy in this respect. Upon mentioning that I was a Vegetarian I was told, "if there is nothing that appeals to you on the menu we'll be happy to prepare something especially for you." What incredible service this is! As it happened we chose standard menu options and all the food was of the very highest quality, a delight.

The Half Moon is a Nice friendly coutry pub, the food and service were to die for and my husband, two of our closet friends and I throughly enjoyed our visit and look forward to dining there again in the very near future.

Don't be discouraged by the bad review earlier - The Half Moon really is worth the detour to go to; excellent starters - smoked salmon & fig salad, goats cheese & bacon salad; main - rack of lamb for two, excellent selection of fish; good wine list; reasonable price.
