I suspect if you wedged an LP in an AS551 DVD player, it would have a go at playing it. It has a wide variety of play modes for a small budget.
However, the remote control was designed by monkeys, and the worst thing about it is the tremendous amount of heat it generates if used for more than about half a movie. This is, I suspect, what causes the enormous pauses and occasional outright failures in the player. I was trying to have a bit of a Buffy season five marathon tonight, but right after the bit where Glory sends Tara insane, the machine just gave up the ghost and tried to hang on to the disk. I actually had to power it down to get it to behave, and the disk eventually popped out white hot. Don't bother, in my humble opinion. Chip a Sony instead.

I'm on my second DVD551 DVD player from Acoustic Solutions. First machine developed a very bad motor noise and locked up when a CDRW inserted.
Also this machine will not play the new film THE SHOOTERS - I just get a flashing screen and the machine locks up.

See all the bad points on the DVD551 DVD player from Acoustic Solutions

Build quality of the DVD551 DVD player from Acoustic Solutions seems good. Remote looks and feels cheap. I had a Pioneer 626D before which cost £400, and looked and felt it - this one doesn't, but it only cost £120 and does a lot more.
As well as standard DVD and CD, it plays VCD, SVCD and MP3. It'll read CDR and CDRW. I bought it to play short home/holiday videos from CD, which it does fine. I edit video down on my PC, encode it in MPEG2 format with TMPGenc and burn onto a standard FAT filesystem CDR or CDRW. Pop the CD into the DV551, and after a few seconds thought it pops up a filesystem navigation menu on the screen. Pick the file or folder you want to play, and hit go ... plays beautifully. So far only tested files encoded in pseudo DVD PAL format: 704x576 @ VBR upto 4Mbit/sec. However, I think one file had the audio track encoded in MP3 format! This format should give you 20+ minutes of near DVD quality on a CD! Voila, digital mastering of your home videos.
