★★☆☆☆

written by on 13/01/2009

Management has changed at this hotel very recently and they have removed the majority of the brochure advertised entertainment. As a result if you are looking for a very very chilled out holiday with early nights and just days lying by the pool it's perfect - if you want a bit of life even one night a week go elsewhere. Even daytime activities have been removed - no aqua arobics etc. If music is provided it is the same songs and finishes before 11.

I wouldn't go back.

“We stayed at Victoria Resort in July, and it was a...”

We stayed at Victoria Resort in July, and it was a fantastic holiday. The staff were friendly, and all spoke English. The rooms were clean, and very big, with a small kitchen area (which was nice but we didn't use as you don't need it when you are all inclusive). The rooms were located away from the main hotel area, which I really liked as it meant it was more peaceful; we had a terrace which was lovely to sit out in the sun, with a great view of the golf course. The main pool was quite busy, and the entertainment staff tried to get you involved with all the activities, which is ok for some, but we preferred to stay by the small, adults only pool, which was always really quiet and had a lovely little pool side bar. We also went on the beach a lot, which you can walk to in about 5-10 minutes, but we usually used the shuttle service (more like a golf buggy!) which took a couple of minutes. The beach was nice, the water not that clear, but the sand was lovely and clean. The beach sellers were annoying at first, but all you need to do is say "no thanks" as soon as they approach you, or they will pester you a lot! (but we enjoyed haggling with them!)
One of the best things about the hotel was the food. The breakfasts in the main buffet restaurant were fantastic, with a massive choice. We usually had lunch on the beach-in the Mexican style beach hut, as it served wonderful food, and the staff here were lovely! But the food in the buffet restaurant was also really good. The buffet restaurant was also good for dinner, as there was plenty of choice (including some vegetarian choices), and you didn't have to book so could just turn up when you were hungry! We ate in the a la carte restaurant a couple of times, and although you had to book, could eat there as much as you wanted, unlike most all inclusive hotels, where it is restricted. The food here was really good, but we enjoyed eating outside, and this restaurant was inside. The pizza restaurant was also fantastic, also required booking but with no restrictions. It was simple pizzas, but cooked in a wonderful pizza oven, and overlooking the golf course and pool area.
Our rep was useful, and was there if we had any problems (not that we did!). We had no problem going out of the resort area, I think you just need to remember that you are in a completely different part of the world, where they live differently, and it is a poor country. You can't expect it to be a safe as home when you go out, and I wouldn't recommend anyone (particularly women) to go out alone; just be aware of any dangers there may be. (as in any foreign, unfamiliar country). We actually went out the resort to a bar and a club a couple of times, and felt totally safe as we were in a group of people.
We went on three trips: the jeep safari, the horse riding and the catamaran. All were fantastic, however it poured with rain when we were horse riding, and as inexperienced riders we felt unsafe riding in the mud so didn't go out in the afternoon on this trip, but stayed round the barbeque drinking rum!! We actually mentioned this to our rep and we got our money back from this trip. The other two trips were really good and I would particularly recommend the jeep safari, as although it was a bit boring at first, the waterfall climbing (and coming back down!) was the highlight of my holiday. We went on the catamaran trip on one of the last days, which was a lovely way to end the holiday! This trip included some snorkelling in amazing coral reefs.
We also did some watersports on the beach during our stay, including jet ski, the banana boat, parasailing, kayaking and snorkelling (the last two were free as part of the all inclusive deal). All the watersports were really god, particularly as I get bored lying on the beach!
All in all it was a great holiday, and I would recommend this hotel. It is smaller than most all inclusive hotels in the area so is more suited to couples and older families, not really so good for kids. The entertainment is also low key, but the staff were all really friendly, and if you want some adventure, I would recommend the day trips (but I would book these through the reps, not from the men selling them on the beach).

I am going to stay at the Victoria Golf next year in a junior suite... just wondered if you would recommend a ground or first floor room?

“Where shall I begin, on arriving at Victoria Resort we...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by love all on 11/11/2004

Where shall I begin, on arriving at Victoria Resort we found our room to be quite spacious, but the kitchen area was grubby. The hotel was said to be over looking a lake, LAKE? ugh swampy river with millions of midges, which drove us mad with the bites even with insect repellent. Once unpacked we walked to the main bar, which really didn't appeal to us, loud and noisy with a lot of day time drunks. The main swimming pool was small and cold. Then we went to see the adult bar and pool, again the pool was very small and cold, the barmaid found it hard to smile even when we were smiling at her. The evening came and time for food, there wasn't much choice and I'm not keen on food that's luke warm, and not that tasteful, rather bland. So after a few drinks we went to bed after a long day to recharge our batteries. Up the next day and met the rep. To cut a long story short, She told us we couldn't or shouldn't leave the COMPOUND as the locals can be a bit iffy, not to hire a car as the locals will ram it to claim on the hire firms insurance as no-one is insured out there, that made us angry as we love exploring the country were staying at. So we decided to go on one of the organized trips (the outback safari) which sounded good as we were under the impression of seeing lots of stunning views etc.... um no we were taken to the local houses to see how they lived and to the schools, it was said by the tour guide that a percentage of the money from the trip went to the schools up keep, like hell does it, if that was the case they should be like brand new, for the amount of people going on these trips day in day out year after year they wouldn't be the shacks they were, so someone's coining it in big time and its not the schools. We did venture out of the "COMPOUND" to Playa Platta by organised taxi which dropped us off in the middle of this stinking filthy town and was adopted by this so called town guide, he decided to show us round and then demand money for his efforts, we wanted to tell him to no, but then his mate turned up showing us his brand new flick knife, luckily the taxi came with in a second of that happening, so we gave the guide a pittance and went back to the Compound, horrible experience. Back to buffet and yuck, I had a bad stomach from start to finish and still have after being back 4 days. The hotel is classed as 4*, no way the paint on the room doors was all peeling off, floors were grubbier, bathroom had 1 bath towel for 2 adults. As for the cleanliness, well I spilt a little white wine on the bottom sheet of the bed, so I slept in the other bed and in the morning I left the bedding back so the maid would see it and presumably change it, no, she tried to clean off with a wet cloth and remade the bed, so when I got into it, the bed was wet. The whole holiday seemed a scam, people saying hello and almost putting there hands out for a tip just for saying the word, when you spoke to the waiters or any of the staff they looked at you after as if for a tip, everything seemed geared at getting something for nothing, I know I sound a boring fart but I've travelled all over this small planet and were not tight, by no means but we cant stand people with chips on there shoulders who want hand outs all the time. As I say this hotel is never 4* I would rate it at 2/3* easily. This place and area is NOT recommended. Anyone in my mind who loved this place and returns must of only stayed in 2/3* self catering in some Blackpool type place in Spain before coming to the Victoria Resort, sorry if I've upset you, but I'm confused by the enthusiasm.

We stopped at the Victoria Resort and found everything very clean and well presented - and no, I'm not used to a Blackpool type holiday. I never go less than 4* and have been to a lot of caribbean islands. You must have been unlucky with your stay as we witnessed no drunks and the staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome

The staff at the Victoria Resort were really friendly and helpful, food was superb, especially the Italian restaurant(miguel smiling the waiter does an amazing party piece serving the coffee) there is an adult pool with a bar and sunloungers, the night time entertainment was varied but to be honest the staff were fantastic and we spent most of the time talking to Domingo who was a one man cabaret behind the bar. The hotels private beach is a 15 min walk or 5 min on the hotel shuttle bus which runs non stop all day. On the beach there is a Mexican restaurant which serves lunch and any drinks you may require during the day. the hotel is situated in the middle of a golf course which is about 50 pounds a round.
