i have had my Dyson dc01 for 15 years and it just wont stop working :) sure its old and out of date but that doesn't mean that it is a bad vacuum. i must say when they came out they where a little pricy but i guess you get what you pay for :P they just don't want to die. most people change the belt and say they perform better but i have never had to replace a belt and i can say it works wonderful, they are good old made in England wonders that work better than modern vacuums with out the hassle. the only problem i have had now its 15 is the suction is slowing down most of the bigger things i vacuum up sadly get stuck in the blockage inspection flap but i bet if i put a new motor in it would fine just like new. the hose makes cleaning the stairs or corners or anywhere like cars etc easy than out old vacuum which back then would probably be a hoover junior. Dyson even give you a nice little selection of tools which store on the side of the vacuum but me being me i miss placed one of the tools but managed to find a cheap replacement due to the age of the vacuum now. just don't expect it to last forever because now for some reason Dyson decided to stop making parts for this work horse vacuum

i have had my dyson dc01 for a while and i have to say it is the best vacuum i have used and i love dyson products this dyson is a dule cyclone vacuum so they dont make them any more the dyson dc01 was dysons first product and i love it it cleans the cat litter the carpet the rugs and the hard floor. The tools are onboard and come with the vacuum which was nice it includes 1 wand which is the vacuum handle and it clips out and you now have good suction 1 crevis tool which works well with the car and the corners 1 stair tool which works well on beds sofas and stairs and a duster tool which is good at its job and if you dont want the wand you have a tool adapter so you can use just the hose you put the small end in the hose and the big end you put the tools on it and off you go. the bin is big and is held on by a clip the cyclone in on a hinge you just pull it up and off. their are 2 filters that you replace every 3 months but now their are washable ones. the brush bar is good and the belt lasts a long time. their is a long cord if it gets blocked their are flaps that you open and remove the blockage and the best part is it is baggles so no BAGS WHOOO! it looks nice in all colours and has good suction it is not to noisey and it has cheap replacement parts i would recomend this to any one.
thanks for reading

This Dyson DC01 was bought for me by my husband as a surprise as the old hoover kept letting us down. This was over 20 years ago. It has had a new hose, wand, fan belt and foot plate and is going as well as when it was first purchased. The brushes will be the next buy as they are wearing down.Thank you Dyson, money well spent. I would have liked to know that the lack of suction from the hose was a result of blocked filters, which when changed worked perfectly.

I bought my DC01 when they first came out nearly 20 years ago. The sales lady in Currys recommended it as I had a cat. I recommended it to my sister in law when she needed a new vacuum cleaner and she discovered that Dyson had reduced the power on subsequent models as people were finding the suction too powerful thus making them hard to push! Luckily mine has full power! 20 years on it is still going strong. I've had to replace the hose, but Dyson sell spares on their website. I love my Dyson and dread the day it dies and I have to replace it with something inferior!

I have owned my DC01 since Feb 1996 and have only ever had one problem - to replace the belt when it got something caught round it.

It is still going strong, still on the original brush though we really ought to replace it now.

It has only ever lost suction when the tube gets clogged and if we leave the filters in too long. I haven't bought any new filters in 5 years as they are now washable and last a long long time.

The srervice engineer came once towards the end of the guarantee period as a courtesy visit and replaced the cable as there had been some issues with them chafing a bit, but ours had no sighn of this.

I wouldn't dream of replacing it.

“Positives: ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by salderney on 17/02/2010

Positives:
Bag-less, so no bags, however such a messy job to empty, defeats the object.
Decent manouverability

Negatives:
-Poor build quality, local Dyson engineer is like family I know him so well from so many call outs during the guarantee period.
-Expensive
-Ugly
-Not particularly good at it's job
-You can get the same thing (that's probably better) from another brand for a fraction of the cost
-Very tacky

So the first and only Dyson I ever bought. Clever advertising however scientifically it's nonsense.. suction does not clean! It's airflow, and those tiny Dyson filters are clogged far quicker than a conventional bag so change the filter ever time you use it for decent performance.. expensive! I would not recommend any Dyson product

I have had my Dyson DC0 1 since early 2000~and it is still going strong and does a good job on my carpets and constant cat fluff. Often needs declogging by removing the base plate
frequently needs a good clean
machine is rather heavy
the hose does not easily reach up the stairs
tends to topple when using the hose
long hair and threads do bind around the roller
the long narrow crevice tool is not very long to reach under the sofa~and the bulbous bit prevents it fitting very far under low furniture

I'd have been happy if I bought my Dyson DC01 super cheap second hand, but otherwise, not at all impressed. Annoying build, awkward shape. I even found the cord tie annoying. No good for corners or small areas. And the list goes on. No recommend!

written by Upright Girl on 02/05/2008

I bought a Dyson DC01 upright cleaner about 15 years ago when they were quite new. It has cleaned my family home brilliantly, but I made sure I used only genuine Dyson filters, which were disposable until the last few years when they made washable ones. I find it very easy to unblock the hose when new carpet fibres tend to build up. My secret weapon being an adapted wire coat hanger! I have replaced the drive belt a few times - no problem. My concern now is whether I should try one of the newer models after reading these reviews or try a different brand of vacuum cleaner, as parts are needing replacing and it would be just my luck that the motor would go after buying them.

Buy a new Dyson! We've had ours 15 years too and it is dying. But we had 3 vacuums in the ten years before - they certainly last.

The DC01 is a very good vacuum but like most new items it has its teathing broblems. Good suction parts easy to aquire. If the vacuume is looked after it will last years. Requires regular emptying and cleaning

written by stannn on 05/12/2006

Other reviewers have spoken of a loss of suction and suggested checking the narrow airways for blockages. These checks are worth doing but the main problem is that even the genuine Dyson belt hardens and elongates by up to 50% over time. This means that although the suction may be optimum, the rotating brush does not have enough torque to pick up hair etc. I replaced the belt and the improvement was amazing.

My Dyson fell over and the wand snapped in the first week or two of ownership; most frustrating! Dyson should further research this fault and invest in wand protection technology. Great review!

written by robfrombris on 04/10/2006

I have had this for almost 10 years. I bought the special 'Antartic' edition - only difference was the colour of grey and blue.

It has never gone wrong, and always worked at full power. We accidentally sucked up the power cable which led to a few nicks and it stopped working. Luckily this was within a metre or two of the plug, so I cut the cable and reattached the plug and all works well - albeit 2m shorter....

I love the design of the Dyson DC01, and the constant full power and the ease at which the bin is emptied.

After all this time, the plastic trim across the front has now snapped - caught it on something. Looking at the parts website it can be replaced for £23. Because of its age, I am considering buying a new one and relegating this one to the garage to do minor work, mostly with the hose.

I would recommend it, and I am definitely going to buy another. At £200 or so for over 10 years use, I think this was great value for money. People I know have bought 2 or 3 other brand cleaners in this time and most have now switched to Dyson.

Shame it's not made here anymore, but at least the design is/was British.
