lovely car once you get used to the diesel sound, loud and rough on tick over.a soon as you accelerate it behaves like a very good petrol engine very smooth due to excellent turbo charger. driven carefully accelerate smoothly drop into fith as soon as possible change down before breaking and brake gently in plenty of time it will exceed it,s published 48 to the gallon on a long run you will get nearer 55 mpg love the classic baby jag looks comfortable interior and good standard spec handles like a dream. only fault really is the dual mass flywheel needs replacing at great expense every 40,000 miles. this can be replaced with a solid mass flywheel and clutch which will last the life time of the car but ive been told this makes pulling away a little jerky. one other fault is going into limp mode when the turbo charger fuel injectors and egr valve become fouled with carbon. don.t panic they do not need replacing they need cleaning treat with diesel injector cleaner two or three times in a week and it will be fine. a good idea is prevention rather than cure put injector cleaner in the tank approx. every 2,000 miles and you should have no trouble. really love my 2005 x type owned it6 months has 84000 on clock drives like new has full service record get a good one and look after it

Nice car, good performance but a bit outdated. Quality car at affordable price.

I had my heart set on a Jaguar for about 3 years since my Dad bought his, so it's still very hard to believe and sink in that I actually bought one.
When I test drove it (I bought the top SE model), I was surprised at how smooth the drive was for a diesel, and how good a job Jaguar have done in sound-proofing the interior. The interior is a lovely place to be, with good leather seats more comfortable than the suit in my house. Steering is effortless, and easier to park than my old Rover 416. I also admire the exterior and it is a far better car than it's competitors..the BMW 3 series and Merc C Class. All I can say is I'm glad I didn't buy a SAAB 9-3, or Honda Accord.
The 2.0d is actually a turbo so it is very fast, but not so much it would get you into trouble, and it's also much more economical than it's petrol counterparts. On collecting mine, I immediately topped up £10 of diesel and have been "testing" it quite a lot but that £10 has seen me through for 5 full days before the "45 mile to go" warning light came on. I then filled the tank costing £59, and it tells me there's 450 miles in that tank which works out about 39mpg - Not bad for a powerful big car.
I would recommend this car to anyone.

I bought a Jaguar 2.0d x-type estate on a 05 plate 2 years ago.
I have no issues with the cars aesthetics, the leather seats are very nice, the extras such as rear park assist and electric / heated seats are all fine. My issue lies in the reliability of the car. I have only ever got 40mpg and we don't drive the car fast, so I'm not sure where the 48 comes from that Jag refer to! Also, the whole turbo needed replacing at a cost of £2000! Not really something you would expect on a 4 year old car with a hefty price tag. I've since found out that Ford have been fitting the Jags with dodgy 2003 spec Modeo diesal engines, which are prone to Turbo problems. Again, not something you would expect with the Jag brand. They really are ruining the Jag image and brand name! All in all, I wouldn't recommend a Jag, my old Seat Ibiza was much cheaper, more frugal and more reliable with pretty much all the same extras (exc the leather)!

1 purchashed a 55 plate Jaguar X Type 2.0 Diesel in nov 2008 with 72k miles after swapping it for a52 plate mercedes220 cdi elegence with 60kmiles the jag is far superior in every department. very comfortable car ,very economical ,with excellent m p g around 48 to the gallon of diesel

My 55 Plate Jaguar X type 2.0 d Sport with leather and convenience pack, folding mirrors, rear park assist and mats (can't believe manufacturers still charge you for mats, oh thanks for the 22 grand and by the way that's another 50 quid for the mats).
This car has been very reliable and never left me stranded now on 82k miles, have owned since new. Paint Work looks like new with no stone chips to the front. Interior has worn well and still looks good. I read some of the comments and indeed it is true that these cars can eat tyres on the front every 10k miles, but regular tracking adjustment has stopped this on my car.
Does anyone know if you can get an X-type serviced at a ford main dealer?
Iam also considering changing the grill to the new model and the rear signature blade, don't think it will cost a lot but will certainly keep the cars looks up to date.
My main gripe with this car if any, is that it just isn't sporty in terms of cornering ability, I've checked the shock absorbers and they read "Sport Sedan" and i fear therein lies the problem, American shock absorbers, if you watch Top Gear, need i say more...
It corners like a canal barge on ice, I've driven an old P reg Mondeo recently, my mother in laws, and it is actually more comprised, balanced and direct through the corners with little or zero body roll.
Having said all of that, all in all I would still buy a new X Type, the DSC may have improved the cornering some, but 4WD would have been better still.
355nm of torque over boost more than a Vauxhall Astra VXR, not sure if it does really equate to quicker mid range pull though!

Not the most reliable car I've ever owned. Airbags failed due to wire rubbing against front bumper mountings. Has a flat spot between 3250rpm and 4000rpm that is often so noticeable you would think you'd lifted your foot off the accelerator. Dealer says there is nothing wrong with it. Then takes another £120 off me. This week it has started dropping into 'limp home' mode. Engine is still sweet as a nut it just appears to be all the other stuff around it that falters. Oh and yes I do have rust under the boot number plate recess like every other Jag. Did I mention that it eats tyres as well? about 10,000 to a front set.

The Jaguar X Type is a well designed car that are a dream to drive. They are great value for money and they are very frugal. They make you want to go fast as the acceleration is immediate and raw. Very comfortable and plenty of toys. So much so that my brother bought the 2.2 Sports Premium, 6 months after I bought my 2 ltr. what a car.

I've had a Jaguar X-Type for about a year now and all I do is put fuel in it and take it for a service, the car asks for no more - never gone wrong, broke down, missed a beat - nothing.

My Jaguar X-type 2.0 diesel is superb - it never misses a beat.

Apart from the problems I do love the car, and would have another, but with dark interior. The car I have is zircon blue with dove interior. Shame that Jaguar didn't fit the twin exhaust like 2.5 and 3.0 on the diesels. I have just done the self conversion to twin exhausts on mine and it transforms the looks.

An excellent motorway cruiser my Jaguar 2.0D Classic is a company car and I got it because it just crept under the £20k limit I was set and it sits on the drive next to my Jaguar XJR-S 6.0 V12.
Daily commute speed is 90-100mh. At 70 it is almost silent, at 100 you start to get more tyre noise.
The car has been utterly reliable apart from an intermittent boot lock fault.
Front tyres lasted 30k, rears 60k.
Build quality is excellent, no rattles. Startup engine noise is not in S-type/Chrysler 300C territory.
30k miles per year and at 60k it is still a good drive.
The boot is the largest in the Jaguar range due to its suspension but it is not very high.
Second best Jaguar I have had, I am considering replacing it with a X-type 2.2D Sovereign or a 2.7D S-Type Spirit.
Pub bores say it is a rebadged Mondeo but I drove both back to back and this is not the same machine. It feels smaller than a Mondeo (a good thing) and is quieter and sharper. Excellent car for long commutes.

The best car I have had to date, much better and more reliable than the VW Golf GT TDi I had before which spent far to much time in service centre, having warranty work. Touch wood, this Jaguar has had no problems.
written by Woodster1971 on 23/02/2007
All in all an excellent car indeed. British through and through. The styling is a matter of taste - you'll either love it or hate it. It has a classic look which I love.

I have been a BMW car fan-buyer practically all my life. Until 2005, my 2001 BMW 328i fully loaded Estate started to bore me. Normally I miss my ex car for months after I change it, like an old shoe. Not this time, the Jaguar X-Type is perfect. Enjoying every mile, specially the manual gear, smooth and accurate. The interior is more plush than my ex fully loaded but bland BMW.
The torque makes it easy to drive in traffic as well as allows for secure overtaking. It has more space than my ex BMW Estate, and burns less fuel.
It is more reliable than any other European-US made car, (a study by an insurance company in the UK based on 55,000 cars had the X-Type in 13th place among 100 (the top 12 were Japanese). The first non Japanese car, a Jag. BMWs Audis VWs, were down the list.
So eat your hearts out all you negative critics of the X-Type with hints at its Mondeo 'origins'. Well only 18%, namely the engine is from the Ford PSA joint venture engine used on the Mondeo, however, it was reworked for the Jag. Gice me a car that is 100% 'pure', the Mini? VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi cross platforms, engines and parts, Volvo? Range Rover? etc. Thanks to Ford Jag was saved and kudos to them for making the car more affordable while maintaining the Jag line-touch.
Move over BMW.

I have a 2005 'S' model Jaguar X-Type with full leather, and a few other bits and bobs incl. It has dynamic stability control (or whatever it's called). It replaced a lowly Mondeo (2002) diesel, so I was familiar with the engine dynamics. The seats are brilliant, and make me appreciate the handling of this car. It tickles along at 100mph all day long (not in this country). I drove two 4 hour journeys in one day, and felt 100% better than I did in the Mondeo.
I recommend this car. I looked at the Classic and it was not a patch on the 'S' or Sport models.
Cheaper to lease than Audi and BMW. At the time of writing this review, Jaguar has slashed 25% off lease costs!! So get one now!

The Jaguar X-Type Estate 2.0 Diesel is less than one year old and spends more time in the repair centre than out.
Jaguar assistance unhelpful when they should be assisting and not very good at co-ordinating replacements.
written by SmithKL on 26/08/2004
The Jaguar X-Type Estate 2.0 Diesel executive car is exceptionally good with respect to refinement and performance. Very good torque means that it is easy and relaxed to cruise at high speed.
The only critisisms are some features on the car are a little down-market such as the fuel cap release and the manual rear windows on the Classic model. A trivial annoyance is the lack of coin storage for road tolls etc.
Average fuel ecconomy achieved approx. 40mpg.
Written on: 29/12/2004
I would agree with the refinement of the car and that some of the trim can feel a little cheap - the air con / radio centre console for one.
<br>
<br>Choose the 's' version recently released, which is a hybrid of the Sport (half leather sports seats, larger alloys) and the SE (better air con, rear electric windows).
<br>
<br>I don't think the engine is as good as the Audi 1.9tdi (previous car) and you certainly cover the car behind in 2mm of soot if you put your foot down.
Written on: 13/07/2005
An average car that breaks down regularly.
<br>'Jaguar Assistance' not helpful when you breakdown which is often.
<br>I will never buy jag again, Nor will anyone else in my company as it has just been taken off the list of company cars due to the issues above.
