“Nobody knew what to do!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by dxHunt263 on 07/03/2020

6th March 2020 Not Verified | Staff training needed in fire procedures. Yesterday we arrived from Dubai and awaited the return of our cases. Whereas I accept that an Emirates flight has a lot of baggage to take off the plane we considered the wait far too long - around 30 minutes. I have never waited so long in an airport to collect our baggage. Whilst still waiting the fire alarm went off and nobody seemed to know what to do. There was no loud speaker announcement just someone shouting to leave the building, which could easily have been missed if you were one end of the terminal. But as we tried to leave, the security doors were shut through to the outside area and people were kept locked in. As a public sector worker I have been trained to leave the building immediately and yet we were locked in the baggage collection area, which I consider a breach of fire regulations as shouldn't you leave immediately and report to an allocated point in the airport? Nobody seemed to know what to do and people were told not to collect any more bags but to leave - we couldn't. This could have turned into a very serious fire with casualties as people were not trained to react quickly. If the safety and security of passengers is of paramount importance why did this not continue when a fire bell rang - shame on you Birmingham Airport.

“OK service BUT”

★★☆☆☆

written by Brayden157 on 09/07/2018

Recently travelled from Birmingham Airport to Faro; it was our first experience at Birmingham airport. Overall everything thing was good compared with Luton or Stanstead queues and transfer from carparks to the terminal. However, totally disappointment that in in Birmingham Airport there is no drinking water stations for customers to refill drinking water. Society is aware of the security implications of not taking liquids through airport security checks and those checks are fully supported but there is no reason why one cannot take an empty water bottles through to be refilled on the other side. In addition to this I was unable to see clear areas for recycling (The waste management policy states ' minimise waste and recycle where possible' ) In todays world for recycling incentives and our awareness of the environmental implication for plastic pollution, why are customers being encouraged to throw away drink bottles and purchase plastic bottles for drinking water? Outlets charged approx. £3.00 for a bottle of water! What a total rip off. talk about getting people in a holding pen for two hours and exploiting your captive audience. why isn't the airport encouraging recycling and providing water filling stations? Not everyone wants to drink alcohol in the an airport!

“Shambolic”

★★★☆☆

written by DwayneOgden245 on 14/09/2017

I recently had the displeasure of using Birmingham Airport. The queues in passport control were horrendous and we had to wait for forty minutes to clear. The escalators were switched off to stop passengers shunting into each other. The Disney method of queuing reminds one of animals in cattle pens. You would think after this our cases would be ready for collection, no such luck, we had to wait a further 30 minutes for them to arrive. I think the problem lies in the rapid expansion of the airport without the infrastructure being in place. Anyway, I will never use this airport again until the facilities have improved. I would rather travel further afield and get a decent service.

“Ashamed this is my local airport”

★☆☆☆☆

written by larkweed on 08/08/2017

long queues on arrival at passports. That happens. Disabled toilet not working. No advice on alternatives. No staff providing info. No one cares. No one knows a manager I can talk to. Border control blame airport. Airport staff blame border control. Advised to raise toilet issues with the Home Office. Try wall phone. Every number is on Voicemail apart from emergency number which doesn't answer at all. Total absence of management. No one is interested or cares. A total embarrassment. Eventually told they are busy. True but you might think the number of flights is predictable.....

“Birmingham airport Parking”

★★☆☆☆

written by Nola156 on 14/07/2017

Used Maple Manor Parking at Birmingham Airport recently. Arrived at about 0515 to find area used for car drop off was absolutely chaos. No empty bays to park car so after waiting 15 minutes just had to park car anywhere, and give key to staff otherwise would have been late for flight. Worst courtesy parking I have ever used. Nothing to like about it!

“Best Airport we've used in years”

★★★★★

written by nuttynettie765 on 06/09/2016

We travel from a UK airport 2 - 3 times a year. We are a group of seven people who's ages range from 86 to 5 years. We usually travel from Gatwick and occasionally Cardiff, or Bristol. This is the first time we have used Birmingham for many years and I was REALLY impressed. We needed special assistance as the eldest member of our group has reduced mobility. Being able to pick up a wheelchair on arrival made it all so easy. We could navigate the site with ease before leaving her in the capable hands of the special assistance team for boarding. The wheel chair was again left with us, for our convenience, when we returned. No having to climb on, or off buggies like at Gatwick. The resources for children were great too. Keeping them not only amused, but educational as well. That combined with a great choice of shops and great onsite parking, means that Birmingham will be my first choice for air travel in the future

“Unsatisfactory end to holiday”

★★★☆☆

written by Sharmwolf on 30/03/2015

Returned from Sharm El Sheikh on Sunday 22nd March 2015 at 21.15. Finally disembarked at 21.50. The reason for the delay was the steps delivered to the plane were the wrong size so we had to wait for a replacement set which took 30 minutes. Not really what you want at that time of the evening following a 6 hour flight. I know of someone else who had the same issue last year. Get a grip Birmingham , you keep telling us want to expand. Just to be fair the outgoing bag drop , security checks , time in departures were a good experience.

“Baggsge Reclaim ”

★★☆☆☆

written by Pablof382 on 23/10/2014

arrived 6:55 Saturday morning from New York. reached the baggage reclaim conveyor belt where my companions luggage came off within 10 minutes. we waited a further 20 minutes before an announcement was made that no baggage would be coming off the New York flight they would be unloading the luggage from the Montego Bay flight which arrived after the New York flight. we then had to wait a further 25 minutes for the New York baggage to be unloaded. 55 minutes waiting for luggage when there were only two flights landed. 3-4 carousels completely empty and not used at all. . What does this say about a 'international' airport. what atrocious service

“Absurd level of security checks for a flight within...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mkav on 27/08/2014

Flying to Munich last Thursday I had to go through the metal detector, ( I did not set it off) have a hand scanner search, go through a body scanner, have everything in my shoulder bag taken out and examined and various items swabbed including my sunglasses!!!!! Well BHX security, how many planes have been brought down by a pair of sunglasses? The only time the security 'youth' dropped his irritating smirk was when he picked up my iPhone charging cable and looked at it like it was a length of det cord! Yea, why did you not ask for a hair from my eyebrow and examine it under a scanning electron microscope to verify that it did not pose a threat to the aircraft! I recognise the need for security checks but this lot think they can do what they like under the umbrella of secuuuuurity! I was flying to Hamburg from Birmingham, not to Washington with a direct transfer to the White House lawn!!! For the record, I have no convictions, have never taken a prohibited drug in my life, have never tried to get anything through customs that I should have declared and I was travelling within the EU and had to endure this absurd level of security processing. Well I am NOT happy and will mark that by going out of my way fly from other airports in future. BHX, thanks for NOTHING!

“Bad experience with security staff”

★★☆☆☆

written by number187 on 17/08/2013

Airport is ok overall for a regional but had a bad experience with one of the older female security staff who was exteremly ignorant, kept blankly ignoring me when I asked nearly ten times if I was required to remove my shoes for the check -- finally gave me some kind of smart answer in reply and continued to ignore me again. Really in this day and age this kind of service should not be allowed -- put me in a bad mood for rest of my trip. Hard enough travel with out dealing with people like this. Sort it out birmingham!! from what I have read these experiences seem to be very common here and this is really not expectable any more.

“Low paid over worked staff”

★★★★★

written by on 21/10/2012

I fly from Birmingham regularly with my job. Some of the checking in and security staff now seem to recognise me and my name. Over the last few years I have noticed a lot of investment at the airport but all investment comes at a cost. The staffing levels have gone down, the ques longer and so are the staff faces. When asking why this is I have got to the bottom of it over the last 3 or 4 months. No pay rise in the last 3 years. Having to work up to 6 hours before being let off for breaks. Having their staff car park taken off them so they can rent it out to local businesses. Ever changing shift patterns. Bully tactics to get them to leave with no new staff to replace them. My job is to do with basic human rights and I feel sorry for these guys n girls. So yes the airport is doing well for itself. Looks and feels clean. But at a cost. So please don't moan at the staff for delays. Moan at the person responsible for your delay. Mr Paul Kehoe who's details you will find on their web site.

“Yesterday I flew in to Birmingham from Palma. As we...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 31/07/2010

Yesterday I flew in to Birmingham from Palma. As we neared the desks in UK Border Control, a member of airport staff closed off the direct route so that we had to go up and back two empty aisles rather than go straight to a control desk. She did this without any comment and declined to answer when I asked why she had cloed off the route, simply pointing the way to go. Her colleague smiled and said "Now you have a long walk." There were control desks empty, so when we had walked the prescribed route, we were beckoned straight to waiting staff. I was sorry that this type of behaviour would be the first experience that travellers to the UK would have and thought how poorly it compared with the way the public is treated elsewhere in Europe. It also contrasted with the courteous reception from Border Control Staff. I asked how this part of the airport was staffed and understand that the people managing arrivals into Border Control are airport employees. They gave a poor impression that should be corrected with better recrotment and training.

“Having flown mainly from Manchester Airport to the US...”

★★★★★

written by Dazafly on 03/05/2010

Having flown mainly from Manchester Airport to the US in the past I was pleasantly surprised when I recently flew from Birmingham to New York Newark. What a good impression this airport gives. I parked the car in the Multi-story long stay. I arrived at Continental Airlines Check in. No queue at Business Class desk the staff were polite and friendly again only a short wait to go through security again staff were polite and friendly. I had some time to buy gifts for my family and friends in the US. Prices and choice were comparable with any of the London Airports. My flight left on-time and we arrived early into Newark. On the return flight we arrived on stand on time and my bags were with me within 20 minutes. Great experience, polite staff, clean modern looking facilities. Much better than shabby, tired Manchester Terminal 2 and most UK regional Airports I have recently travelled from.

I think Birmingham airport is a bit shabby, well, it is when you mostly fly from East Midlands and Stansted which are are the best two by a clear mile, particually Stansted!

written by atsglo on 17/06/2009

BHX is similar to most other regional airports I guess but has bad points which mean I for one will try and chose elsewhere to fly from next time. I refuse to pay to be dropped off outside the door. OK to charge for say a weeks parking but even that at £50 is a joke but to have to pay when being collected, and if the flight or BHX delays you then that charge is higher for the waiting lift. Food outlets inside high priced and poor quality

I have a very bad experience EVERY TIME i visit to Birmingham International Airport. Not about the facilities but the staffs over there are not polite and didn't really give the proper manners to foreign people. My dad come to visiting here and obviously he can't said proper English, what they do is they always not giving thier patient to help him but keep on showing thier attitube to us eventhough we have been speak politely to them. I'm strongly disappointed to this airport since i have been to lots more airport but never see any worse than this one. Will not recommend to any of my friends or never been there as posible.

I think Birmingham airport is ok, I don't think I would recommend it but once you are through security the airport is fine. It's just getting there which is the biggest problem!

In my opinion Birmingham is an airport slightly below average with more bad points than good points. I wouldn't bother recommending this airport to others because it is nothing special.
