Dodgeball is funny, simple and easy to follow. Some of the matches were too short they were just summarised. Overall it's very good film seen it so many times.

“Dodgeball - I only made it halfway through this movie....”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by whopper on 05/02/2005

Dodgeball - I only made it halfway through this movie. I didn't see anything particularly funny about it, except the representation of the health club as noted above. The plot is the age-old "They think they're better than us and they make us feel inferior, but we'll show them they can't push us nerds around!" There were enough naked women doing suggestive things in the first half to make me feel pretty embarrassed in mixed company. Where are the exposed men doing suggestive things to women? Does anyone think exploited people are the underdogs?

Tommy Boy was 10 times the movie this one is. If I want to see porn, I'll rent porn, and if I want to see a real comedy, I'll go see that, too. The only case in which I would recommend this movie is if it was on Mystery Science Theater.

This movie is a bad reflection on American culture.

Spook's Response to whopper's Review

Written on: 18/02/2005

I have to admit I'm very confused by your review. Dodgeball was certainly not the best or funniest film I've ever seen and the plot was very predictable, but it hardly amounted to cheap, tawdry porn! I didn't notice any explicit sexual content (even Marsha Brady or whatever her name is stayed clothed!) unless you count the thing about the uniforms for the tournament, where they accidentally got some fetish gear. Even, so, the only thing on display was Ben Stiller in way too much spandex. In fact, I'm surpised there wasn't more mention of sex and more jokes of that ilk in a film such as this. Are you sure you got the right film?

Spook's Response to whopper's Review

I am a woman.... I didn't actually think it was particularly graphic in regards to the women, especially when you consider that Ben Stiller spent most of the movie in spandex and had an apparatus to inflate his groin area with air. I noticed far more scantily clad men....:).

Whopper's Response to whopper's Review

Written on: 19/02/2005

I saw the gym and the car wash. You don't see any (good looking) men in bikinis, and none with their genitalia pressing through wet cloth on a windshield like the women's breasts at the car wash. It was all very one-sided. I have to admit I cut out before I could see where the Thong Song was leading, but if it was anything other than the obvious, let me know. :)

I think that a lot of people see so much female flesh that it tends to blend into the background, but it was there, I assure you. :) Try watching it from a woman's point of view. :) The amount of good looking male flesh displayed (not the guys who were displayed as a joke or as contrast, like the geeks at the carwash) in proportion to the women was very small. The disparity made me quite uncomfortable.

It just seemed like the plot was non-existant and, the (funny) jokes were sparse, but bikini and spandex clad women were everywhere, so what was the point of that movie? But there must be more to it, lots of people watch these movies all the time.... If you can explain it to me, I'd be grateful.

Thank you for your response. I'm glad to know someone read it, even if it is to disagree. :)

“Dodgeball!! Is the real underdog story of the Amercian...”

Dodgeball!! Is the real underdog story of the Amercian sporting society! Tops films like the Mighty Ducks mainly because of humour which is strange for an "underdog" film. Usually these films are aimed at the children but Stiller has the techique which is used in films like Police Academy and Naked Gun. He makes the film into a "spoof" with quite a brillant outcome and it is aimed more towards young adults! Some moments are genius like the five rules of dodgeball! Plus the idea of using dodgeball (the game you're banned to play in the playground - the U.S. version of British Bulldog to an extent). The ending is also very clever too! Dodgeball isn't for Mr. Serious but if he went to see it he might laugh!! This is the funniest film of the last few years!! I give it 9.5!!!

For me Dodgeball is the best film of the year so far. The humour is simple yet absolutely spot on. I was a bit worried that it would be one of those where all the funny bits were in the trailer, but this is not the case. There are some many jokes, so many painful moments, and so much comedy genius. I've never really liked Ben Stiller that much but for me this has to be his finest performance, I'd give him an Oscar for it, seriously, he makes his character just so unlikeable it really makes the film. Vince Vaughn also performs well and the support cast each bring something to the party, I particularly enjoyed the sports commentators at the dodgeball tournament. There are some top cameos too. If you enjoy laughing then this is the film for you, the plot is reasonably obvious but we wouldn't have it any other way.

“While Dodgeball looks dumb, it is the funniest film of...”

★★★★★

written by 80smetal4ever on 19/08/2004

While Dodgeball looks dumb, it is the funniest film of the year so far. The basics are that two fitness gyms are across the street from each other. There is "Globo Gym" which is a state-of-the-art facility owned by White Goodman (Ben Stiller). This is Ben Stiller's third best role, after "Something about Mary", and "Meet the Parents". Across the street is the "Average Joe's" gym. It is a run down, older gym, with a bunch of losers for members. It is run by Peter LeFleur (Vince Vaughn). I'm not sure where Vince was hiding after he made the "Cell", and before he made "Old School" - but it is good to have him back in movies again.

The bank sends a representative to tell Peter LeFleur that he owes them 50,000. Her character is Miss Beech, and she is played by Christine Taylor (Marcia Brady in the current Brady films, and Ben Stiller's real life wife). She is attractive, but it looks like she may have used botox on parts of her face.

Peter has a month to pay the 50k, or his mortgage becomes property of the bank, who has agreed to sell it to White Goodman. He begins to taunt Peter about this, telling him that his gym will make a great parking lot in about a month.

The guys at Average Joe's try to come up with ideas to raise the money. Their idea of a car wash, didn't work so well. One of them sees that a dodgeball tournament in Las Vegas pays 50,000 to the winner. However, only one of their 8 members knows how to play. He borrows a 1930's instructional film from his high school to bring to the guys to teach them the game. The film is very funny, it is in black and white, and features the 5 rules of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge.

Their team has to win a qualifying match first to make it to the Vegas tourney. They end up playing a girl scout troop from their hometown. They actually lose to the girls. In an interesting twist, one of the girl scouts tests positive for 3 types of steroids, so the Average Joe's team wins by default.

White Goodman is friends with the chancellor of the dodgeball association(William Shatner/Captain Kirk), and pulls some strings to get his team in the tournament too. His team has 3 guys who weigh at least 250 lbs, and a woman who goes at least 200, and is the reigning dodgeball champ for 5 years running in her native Soviet country.

The key to the Average Joe's team is their coach. He is Patches O'Houlihan, a former 8-time dodgeball all star. He is now in a wheelchair, but that doesn't take anything away from his coaching ability. He has very strange methods, but he gets results. "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball"...

The dodgeball tournament is going to be broadcasted live on ESPN 8, the "Ocho". The announcers are awesome!! They are "Cotton", played by Mr. Brady of the current Brady films, and "Pepper", played by Jason Batemen. Pepper is the color analyst, and a master of the obvious. Here is one of my favorite quotes. Cotton says, "Wow, it's a two on one for the Purple Vipers against the Average Joe's, that's what I call a menage a trois of pain". The response by Pepper, "You know Cotton, you usually have to pay a little extra for that type of action". That was so gravy.

Both of the gymnasium teams keep winning, and find themselves in the final vs. one another. Nobody is giving Average Joe's a chance, as the team led by White Goodman is just so good.

There are some great cameos in this film, including: William Shatner, Chuck Norris, and Lance Armstrong.

I'm not going to give away the end, but it was very good. I give this film a 9/10. I had to see this film twice, to get all the good "one liners".
