“Absolutely disgusting!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Rach_1407 on 26/10/2012

We went to the trafford centre branch. Me and my partner hadnt been here before so thought we would try it. Someone came to seat us and we had our order taken quite quickly and and our drinks were instantly at the table. There was an awful smell inside. not really sure what but smelt like off prawns. It didnt take long for our food to arrive. First impression was that it was very small portions. My partner ordered spaghetti meatballs, mine was carbonara. It came with green pasta. We asked the waiter if it was possible to have normal pasta. The waiter replied "its fettuccine" trying to make us look stupid isnt really good service. Fettuccine is a type of ribbon pasta nothing to do with it being green. To be fair, when we later checked the menu it did say verdi, our mistake but there was no need to be so rude! Whilest waiting for a new meal another customer sent a pizza back. The kitchen staff mumbled something. The new carbonara arrived. The taste was disgusting! Burnt nasty tasting sauce. Hint of fish maybe. Only thing i could think was this has been cooked in a dirty pan. We spoke to a waiter who told us this is how its cooked. My partner explained we had both tasted it and maybe he should taste it himself. He mumble about tarragon being in the sauce. Tarragons a green herb we replied. Theres no herbs in this at all! No apology otlr anything just tried to fob us off. Staff need to learn their products theyre selling and chefs need to learn how to cook. My partner enjoyed his, although left hungry as the portion was so small! Upset stomach 6hrs later and a sleepless night! Steer well clear of this place!

“I brought some friends and family members to Est Est...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Baiweilien on 29/12/2005

I brought some friends and family members to Est Est Est in Chester for lunch today.

Est Est Est has always been a restaurant chain I have been very happy to frequent whenever I visit Chester, Didsbury or Manchester. On average, I have probably visited 3 - 4 times a year for a good number of years.

However, we received a very indifferent service from the restaurant in Chester today.

My wife and I ordered spaghetti carbonara for our main courses. The waiter brought over the smallest portions that I have ever seen. When I quietly commented on how previously I had enjoyed larger portions, he shrugged and said "sometimes they are large, sometimes they are small". It was as though this was an act of god, something over which he had no control. He did not take my complaint seriously and did nothing to rectify matters.

Later in our meal, no-one came over to ask us whether we had enjoyed our meal or test the quality of service we were offered. In fact, the carbonara was rather bland - bacon too fatty, too creamy, not enough parmesan cheese and clearly the service was indifferent.

Further, at the end of our meal, we paid the bill, did not leave a tip and left the restaurant. None of the staff said thank you or goodbye.

Finally, two hours after leaving the restaurant, my wife and I came down with a stomach complaint requiring a few rapid trips to the washroom in short succession - the sort of upset that stems from dirty / poor quality food. We had not eaten anything else that day.

“Est Est Est - I went to this restaurant on a Sunday...”

★★★☆☆

written by melissanealon on 25/05/2005

Est Est Est - I went to this restaurant on a Sunday night with 6 friends. We had booked in advance as were told that the restaurant could get quite busy at the weekends. We ordered an appetiser of garlic pizza bread between us all and it was really nice. Then we each ordered a starter, main and some desserts and coffees. The food was absolutely fantastic but the service was awful. From the minute we entered the restaurant it appeared as if we were an inconvenience to the waiter and he seemed irritated by our orders and just plain rude. We had to wait about 15 mins to even order drinks. Then another 20 mins before we could order food and the restaurant was not busy. We nabbed a waiter and asked for an appetiser of garlic bread as we were all famished. So we eventually got that and had it completely munched before we were able to order our food. We ordered all our food and 2 bottles of wine and a jug of water. We also ordered 2 extra portions of chips for everyone to share. The food, minus the 2 chips, came and the wine came and we asked for our water. After about 15 mins we asked for the water again and the waiter said it was coming. The chips had still not come at this stage and After another 10 minutes we asked the waiter about the water again and he rolled his eyes and said he would get the water and went off mumbling to his friend. After about 10 minutes, when we were all finished out mains the water still had not arrived so I had to go to the bar and ask one of the girls to bring it over. I must stress the restaurant was not busy at all and the waiter was more interested in flirting with a table of girls behind us then providing us with service. The waiter never mentioned the water again, even to say that he saw it had come or that he had forgotten. Then we ordered the desserts, which came quite quickly and were really nice. Mid way through dessert our 2 extra portions of chips came. When we said we did not want them as we were now at dessert, we were giving a disbelieiving look and asked why not!! Eventually the waiter took the chips away. When the final bill came the chips were still on the bill. So we had a quiet word with the manager about the awful service we had recevied and he took the price of our coffees and the chips off the bill and apologised. It did seem like a really nice restaurant and the food was fab so maybe we caught the waiter on a bad day.

“Having visited a good number of the Est Est Est...”

★★★★★

written by I Know Best on 06/04/2005

Having visited a good number of the Est Est Est restaurants in the Manchester/Cheshire belt, I feel fairly well qualified to offer a review on the franchise as a whole. I have had the pleasure of dining at Est Est Est Alderley Edge (see my other review in Northwest Restaurants), Est Est Est Didsbury, Est Est Est Manchester etc

As my other review states in greater detail, the Alderley Edge branch is a real winner from the top down. It is sometimes amazing how the quality in certain chains can vary from one establishment to another, however in the case of Est Est Est Im delighted to report that each visit to these different restaurants has been a real treat. The service I have received at each establishment has been first class, the prices are more than fair, the range of drinks on offer is excellent and the food is simply sublime. As far as chains go I have to say this is a quality enterprise. Heres a brief rundown on each restaurant:

Alderley Edge Est Est Est in Alderley Edge is a lovely Italian restaurant that I have visited many times and I can honestly say Ive never had a bad experience at this place. The food is scintillating and is an ideal for location for both groups and couples as it is a lively restaurant with a typical Italian atmosphere very friendly and equally busy.

The restaurants location is on the main village strip in Alderley Edge, it is a lovely, picturesque Cheshire village and has some nice surrounding bars and pubs if you have the intention of carrying the night on after your meal. Anyway, back on to the restaurant itself, you can always be assured of a warm Italian welcome upon arrival. It is a place I would recommend booking as it can fill up quite quickly, especially on a Saturday night, however on a week night you would probably be able to get a table without making the reservation. When arriving at the restaurant there is rarely a long wait to get you seated, but if there is not a table available, there is enough space to loiter at the bar whilst savouring a fine Peroni beer or whatever other tipple does it for you. The actual layout and architecture of the restaurant is very good, you arent crammed into small spaces and there is always plenty of room for you to manoeuvre, the smoking and non smoking areas are well divided with the smokers seated near the entrance and the non smokers on the other side of the greeting area. Its actually a really nice building with high ceilings, a nice big bar, and a fair sized out door area if your stopping by on a rare sunny day. The kitchen area itself overlooks the main eating area and you can actually watch your meal being made as the chefs are on full view. This is nice for children who can make their own pizza by customising the toppings they receive.

So, nice location, nice people, nice building, but any restaurant lives or dies by its food. Im happy to report that the food is always of the highest quality at Est Est Est, they make some delightful Pizzas and pastas as well as some mouth watering meat based dishes as well as some vegetarian dishes for the Greenpeace/weight-watchers/fussy students (delete as applicable) brigade. The menu has a really good range and I can safely say this cuisine offers something for everyone.

The penny pinchers out there will probably think it is slightly more expensive than your average Italian meal, however, penny pinching is not something the Alderley Edge area suffers from with its rather high brow residents. No bums or scroungers in this parish. On one occasion I visited, the service was particularly slow, but in fairness to our waitress for the evening, she more than compensated for this by offering us free dessert for the inconvenience. Now thats what I call service. Overall a jolly good restaurant and one I would thoroughly recommend.

Didsbury Great location in the heart of Didsbury village. This place is mega busy on Friday/Saturday nights but usually nice and quiet at the weekend. I would say this is the biggest of the four I have visited and in fairness to the staff at this place, the service has not suffered as a result. Ideal for group meals, you can get a nice big table and have a right old time of it. This restaurant is a well oiled machine and is definitely I Know Best Recommended.

Manchester City Centre Ive only been here once, whilst heavily under the influence on a works Christmas party so my recollections are on the hazy side. As I remember an excellent restaurant, we went on a week night and it was packed so Id imagine you have to book early to guarantee a table at this one. Nice restaurant in a pleasant part of Manchester, tucked away from clubs and rowdy bars that tend to attract all the local pilchards and village idiots. Super food and I look forward to going back.

Overall a very good chain of superb restaurants. I would be interested to know what other connoisseurs think so please post your comments on this issue.
