Robert Hume, Death by Chance:The Abergele Train Disaster, 1868 - Shortly before one o'clock on Thursday, 20th August 1868, the fastest train in the country, the Irish Mail, crashed into a goods train near Abergele, North Wales. It was the worst crash there had been in railway history Most of those who died had boarded the train at Chester and had entered the station through a special covered arcade from the Queen Hotel. Their decision to turn right or left on the platform turned out to have huge significance in the hours ahead
