My Siemens S40 mobile phone's inbox and outbox is not available. Some feautures or functions are not available. Maybe hidden but I can not find it in the manual. Though I have set the ringing tone and message tone when someone calls me there's no sound coming out from the phone.

The Siemens S40 is one of the best phones i have had it lets me do alot of things that i have not been able to do with some of my past phones very stylish and sleek highly recommended

if you're used to phones with a user-friendly menu, like nokia, then i suggest you skip this phone. the Siemens S40 is purely a business phone, so no games here. this phone is so complex yet stylish. it takes time to get used to it. the siemens s40 has many bugs but siemens came up with a fix for it so if ur phone is anything lower than a ver. 7.0 then expect to have problems with your phone.
so far my experience with this phone is ok, although the first week i was constanly playing with it to get familiar with the menus. now i enjoy using my siemens, this is one of my favorite phones from my stash.
if u need help on ur siemens S40 email me at [email protected]

my Siemens S40 mobile phone died after displaying a 'phone failure' message, when I called Siemens support, the guy was telling me how his Microwave died and he dint call the manufacturer, wtf!!! Anyways, the last thing I ever bought from Siemens. STAY AWAY FROM SIEMENS PRODUCTS, Tip of the Day - Nokia!!!!

The Siemens S40 mobile phone is horrible!!! I had it only 7 months and it would constantly lock up and finally locked up for good!! Don't waste money on this one.

Well i bought my s40 a year ago and i expected a great phone. But after one month of use it began to freeze. the internal clock stopped and when i turned it off and on again the battery was suddenly empty like its been highly stressed by the phone. but there are a few things that despite all the errors makes the phone pretty practical, for example the dictating machine and the 3 color display. (Black, weak green and weak blue)
I think the phone doe's it's job when it's working. and thats the important thing. It's better than nothing

General feelings about this Siemens s40 phone - what a bag of dog doo doo. I can't find any ring tones that are downloadable or that can be sent to the phone!! The composer is way over the top and you need to be mozart to us it!

Look, The S40 kicks ass!
I have it
synch with MS Outlook, and my Palm Pilot.
I even DITCHED my Palm Pilot most of the time, because this fas all my calander, and phone entires right here.
The composer is easy for anyone who can use music.
For those that can't read notes, the notes are displayed on the left of the screen.
Much better than Nokia.
Downs: No DATA SMS capabilities with Nokia phones (IE:Ringtones, pictures, address book, calendar)
IRDA lets you BEAM the RTTL ringtone to your phone, FREE.

you should have read the information about this phone before you bought it, you don't have to be a brain surgeon for this phone, but you need brains...

The Siemens s40 mobile phone is great. Tri-Band, nothing special if you're not a business man. I've never had to call outside the country. I'm guessing the high price I paid for the phone was because it was Tri-Band and I didn't even need it. If you're not going to travel often, get a different phone. The battery life isn't long either. You have to turn the blue backlighting off so the phone can last 2 days. With the blue back light on the phone will last about a day and that's if you don't call anyone. Siemens as a cell phone name? Everyone's always had a joke whenever I held a Siemens to my ear.

Actually the Siemens s40 mobile phone is not a Siemens original product, it is a Bosch phone but then brought out by Siemens as their own phone product. This website give a reference: http://www.cellular.co.za/bosch_1886_wap.htm
I have siemens c30 and then get s40. Both are products of Bosch. S40 is a more serious and powerful phone than c30 (like a basic phone but also cool looks), u would feel that the engineer that design the phone has the goal to produce a powerful weapon phone. It is tri-band, with build-in high speed modem, pda-liked function of big memory address book with synchronize function to pc or pda, IrDA, calendar funtion with event reminder.... everything for a business person. And also it has a ultra cool outlook, metal face top give it a firm and solid feeling, its packing is bulky, feeling very solid when hold in hand. Its blue backlit screen looks very cool in dark. Its ringtone is loud with various cool sounds. Reception is strong enough and it can maintain minimum reception loss. Speaker and sound quality is satisfactory, noise is accepetable, although it is not the best among other same class phone. Its menu function is not similar with other popular phones but easy to familiar its menu after some using time.
The weakest point of this phone is the unstability of the software. Actually the early software version has many bugs that needs to fix before this phone goes into the market, but siemens did not do it. Then it has several upgrade version to correct it and make it becomes more stable. I think this is the main point that so much bad comments at the beginning products, then the later products with newest software version that wins more admiration.
I beileve it is not a simple phone, more time using this phone will know it is a great phone and wouldn't want to change to other popular and expensive phone.

i bought this mobile phone 'cos it looks nice (stainless steel casing, clear blue backing, blue backlit screen, blue glowing buttons) and it's a triple band phone. feature wise it's pretty standard, no real innovation or obvious disadvantages.
my beef with this phone is the unstable software. after about 3 months of (minimal) use, things started falling apart (software wise). flashing screen, unable to access address book/sim card and eventually refused to turn on all together. also, the rubber buttons oxidises over time ie. lose clearity, micro crack on surface.
in conclusion, the S40 is a immature product. there are plenty of better phones out there in the similar price range.

I bought this Siemens S40 mobile phone nearly a week ago and already i will have to send it back. I read reviews before i bought it and was warned of the software problems that some people encountered. Not all people had problems so i decided to try it. This would be a great phone if only it worked.
I love the dictaphone and the Infrared link and the overall look of the phone is great but after one day it started to freeze. I couldn't enter a lot of the menu and i couldn't even turn the phone off, i had to take the battery out to turn it off, which really isn't good. It then also started to have trouble reading my phone book, it only found two numbers and listed them over and over again....very frustrating.
I am tempted to try again and see if i get one that works, but i'm not sure if it's worth it.
Before buying this phone, keep in mind that it could have problems!!!! BEWARE!! And seriously, take note of reviews by others.

Loses ringing capability so I don't hear it rings.
Freezes.
I've had various cell phones over the last 9 years (!) but I've never encountered such a problems before.
The phone should be recalled from the USA market ASAP.

I've had various cell phones over the last 9 years and I've never encountered such problems before as with this Siemens s40. It loses its "ringing" capability and its reception. It suddenly doesn't work and the only way to fix it is by removing the battery and the card, etc'.
I had my cell phones changed once already but the same problems persists.
It should be recalled and removed promptly from the USA market.

I AGREE THAT THE SIEMENS-S40 WAS MADE DEFECTIVE. I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH RECEIVING CALLS, HEARING TONES AND TEXT MESSEGING. ONE SOLUTION THAT I FIGURED OUT WAS BY TAKING OUT THE BATTERY EVERYTIME THE OPERATOR WOULD SPEAK. THAT ONLY SOLTIONIZED ONE OF MY PROBLEMS. I BELIEVE THAT THE SEMENS-S40 WAS MADE WITH DEFECTS.

First, a gripe: I've read many a bad review about the Siemens s40 mobile phone and I'm not entirely sure as to how Siemens could have got things so wrong. There have been umpteen software revisions made (I believe it is currently on the ninth) and there are still problems which apparently stem from the file system used on the phone. I won't go into the details of the matter, but as soon as one problem occurs, the problem snowballs until the user has to 'reset the phone' thus discarding all his modifications to the phone (i.e. phonebook etc.)
To put it in context, Siemens wanted a piece of the American market as quickly as possible but didn't have any hardware with which to penetrate it. However, they were able to scan through the pre-release designs of their one-time competitor Bosch, who they had bought out, and pick out one of those (they plumped for the Bosch 1886 viewable at http://www.bosch-telecom.dk/cgi/news.cgi?n=1&p=news.2 ), and voila, a readymade phone they could market in the US. Of course, in the rush to send the phone out there, they implemented a particularly flakey OS which has proved to be this phone's downfall.
It's quite a shame really as Siemens have quite a reputation in Europe for producing high quality, high end communications devices, and they appear to have spoiled their emergence into the American market by rushing out this phone. In any event, to bring things up to date, the Siemens s40 has slowly begun to trickle onto the European market, and despite all the problems I've heard about it, I decided to acquire one - I have quite a knack for buying lost causes.
The software version of the Siemens s40 I own is 5.0.0 (the most up-to-date version is 9.0.0) and it has to be said, the problems do show. For about a week, the phone functioned perfectly, but then every time I took a call, the phone would freeze and so would continue to ring long after the initial caller had hung up the phone. The only way to rectify this problem was by removing the phone's battery, but this was only temporary, and the same problem would recur the next time someone called. The same problem was also evident whenever I attempted to call out on the phone, or indeed, access a text message. I ended up sending this phone back to the retailer only for it to be replaced with another phone of the same software version.
I have now had use of this new phone for about a week, and there have been innumerable problems. The phone has already frozen once while attempting to access a text message. Furthermore, I was cut off during the middle of a telephone conversation, and the phone refused to allow me to make a call, despite the fact that it was displaying full signal strength. Then all of a sudden it lost all signal strength, and refused to regain a signal - despite the fact I had remained sitting in the same place in my house all the time and have never lost a signal here. Once I turned the phone off and turned it back on again, I was back on full signal once more, although I was left wondering for just how long!
I also have an issue with the phones vibration feature (or should that be 'trembler' - why can't they use commonly accepted terminology??) After the first two vibrations, the 'tremble' appears to get weaker and weaker, with it audibly diminishing in strength - and the phone has been fully charged! There is also a slight rattle in the phone whenever it is lightly shaken which, while not necessarily meaning the phone is damaged, leads one to question the build quality of the phone.
However despite these software faults, my major problem is with the 'intentional' problems created by the design and implementation of the phone's features. For example, what is the need for the phone to save every text message that you send? Try as I might, I can't figure out how to switch this 'feature' off, which is a further problem that is typical of most features of this phone - you have to be prepared to read the manual, as NOTHING is where you would expect to find it and NOTHING works how you might think it would.
For example, and first off, there are two different menu systems. If you press the 'menu' softkey, this gives you all of the 'settings' menus in which you can set up the various aspects of your phone. However, if you want to actually use these features, you have to press the button on the side of the phone in order to access a further menu system. In addition, these menu systems are not altogether clear. For example, if you wanted to set the phone up to use WAP, you have to press the 'menu' softkey, but there is then no option for 'WAP settings', rather you have to look in 'Message Settings' and then 'Browser Menu'...confusing, huh? The problem was compounded by the fact that even when I had managed to input all the settings the bloody thing wouldn't connect, getting a 'network not responding' message, despite the fact that same settings worked fine on my other phone. I eventually managed to get it working by trying several other WAP operators in an attempt to find one which worked (eventually managed to get breathe.com WAP settings to work, but O2/Genie settings refused to work as did WAP Access).
Text messaging is made more complicated by the fact that it would appear then when you first start trying to write a message, that T9 predictive text input is not actually available on your phone. No matter how many times you cycle through the options of 'numerical', 'grid input' etc etc there is no T9 option. Instead, you have to seperately 'activate' T9 in the 'Message Settings' option, which means leaving one menu system and entering another....madness!
While I am generally pleased with the aesthetics of the phone, it has to be said that the buttons are very stiff and rigid and require a great deal of pressure in order for them to pressed down and 'click'. This first seemed like a benefit to me as I have owned many phones whose keys are quite loose, or don't produces a satisfying 'button press' 'experience'. However, the keys are made of hard rubber which means it can actually get quite painful after a long 'text' session. Also, while the 'brushed metal exterior' is very pretty, it only remains so as long as you don't touch it, as every finger mark is recorded for posterity.
I'm also not overly confident about the internal antenna. I travelled from Manchester to my home town which is about some 15 miles outside Manchester in a densly built up area, and my phone actually managed to 'lose' a signal on at least one occasion for about a two minute period. I have never before lost a signal with any other phone while making this journey - indeed while travelling through the Greater Manchester area, never have I lost a signal, and nor would you expect to with a high frequency of GSM transmitters, which does not inspire confidence therefore if I were to use the phone in less densely populated areas.
I summary, I am wholly disappointed with this phone, and am only glad that it cost me just £150 otherwise I might very well have to consider throwing myself down a flight of stairs for ever having been so stupid as to buy this hunk of junk.

I bought 2 S40 siemens
<br>one for me and one for my girlfriend.
<br>The both of te phones present problems that are
<br>not random !
<br>Both of the phones after some months of use ,
<br>can not visualize at SMS menu the options for SEND , INBOX and OUTBOX , DRAFTS TOO.
<br>So you can not read messages , you can only send them.
<br>My phone has problems with internal memory
<br>After 300 tel. numbers momorized...
<br>with 30% of memory (for numbers) free I can not
<br>add new number because of "memory full" message appears.
<br>I try to remove all the numbers from the phone
<br>but after that (the memo was EMPTY)
<br>there is still no possibility to add any number on the phone.
<br>I tried to copy one by one (there is no option to
<br>download the TEL MEMO on the sim memory) on the sim card
<br>but after that process about 70% of the entries
<br>are unusable. I can read the name of the entry but can not make call for that , can not edit , or delete - I remember that the last described entries are already on the sim card...
<br>ANother problem that I saw
<br>is that at low temperatures
<br>under 0 degrees celsium
<br>the Phone is too slow to browse menus and to run commands
<br>and some times turn off without a request.
<br>And that is valid for the couple of phones I describe.
<br>Best Regards

I like this Siemens s40 mobile phone - it's quality is better than my Nokia 8290 (82xx series). It has lots of memory and the features are very good. It was a bit pricey, but it can handle high-speed data (new here in the States) and has a nice set of features. It was much better than the alternative from my carrier (an Ericcson tri-band phone).

I am just an average person who needs a cellphone to make calls. And for that the Siemens S40 mobile phone is wonderful. The reception is crystal clear and since I don't talk about my phone a lot, I have yet to experience any problem with reception. Most of my reception problems have to do with my wireless provider. Sometimes a call will fail, but again that has more to do with my provider than the phone. It's a grown-up phone for people who don't really care about changeable face plates and games. I love it.

Well, S40 definatlly a good phone exact that some firmware problme in older model. Go to Siemens service centre to upgrade it and some errors can be corrected.
