“Well firstly I would like to say that as a person with...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Jennji76 on 28/12/2008

Well firstly I would like to say that as a person with Mexican heritage and growing up on Mexican food, I feel this restaurant is lacking by large means.
This was not my first time. I have been 5 times over the last 7 years. And every time, it has not been nice but this time was definitely the worst.

The food: Well my husband, son and I went to pedro's for the first time in about 6 years. And I thought it was just barely ok last time, but I see that even after 6 years, not only have they not grown, but in my opinion the food has managed to get worse. Whilst the kitchen is an open kitchen, all you see is a large assembly line of 'cooks'. Whilst our starters were warm, I could easily tell they were 'warmed' in the microwave rather than being fresh items. We ordered the 'queso and chips' which was a pot of slightly flavored cheese dip and prepackaged chili flavoured tortilla chips. Now I personally buy corn tortillas from London at a very cheap price, and I am sure a restaurant could get them cheaper in quantity. Fresh chips would be easy to make and would really make what I thought was a lowly excuse for an appetizer somewhat more appealing. The chips came with the dip, but were quite obviously the bottom dregs of the bag as it was a small mash of crumbles rather than anything you could actually dip into a sauce. So I pasted. And as they tortilla chips were chili flavoured my 3 year old was not keen on them, and I have found very little he won't eat. We did however order some garlic cheese ciabata bread, which was all in all not too bad, so that is the only thing I can say I didn't mind. We also ordered their 'Mexican wets' which were sauted potatoes in a bbq sauce with cheese. This too was very plain, and I felt it was more like some cheap idea for an appetizer than something with thought. This is meant to be Mexican food. Make Mexican food.
Mains: I ordered the 'all the way' combo dish of: tomatillo ribs, a beef taco, and a chicken (I think) enchilada. My husband had the surf and turf stack, and my son ordered the kids meal of taquitas and chips. Firstly as a Mexican and growing up on this food, there is no such thing as a taquita. there is however a taquito, which is nothing like what, was actually served. In my opinion, Pedro's has managed to turn Mexican food into the typical stereo type of; it's all the same food 'just folded differently' which was such a let down. Mexican food is so flavorsome, but yes, very basic ingredients. This restaurant doesn't even serve beans! Beans are a main staple of Mexican food. In the past they did serve them, but they seemed as though they were from a can, and not a fresh bean in site. Anyway off the subject there.
My meal was HUGE in quantity. The enchilada appeared to be a glorified taco flipped upside down with sauce on it. And was the exact same thing my son had which was mean to be a taquita. So, I think they may be a bit mixed up in what they were serving. Enchiladas are made with corn tortillas and not flour. Flour tortillas cooked in this way tend to turn to much which is what both mine and my son's meals turned into. Whilst the salad was fresh (onion, lettuce, sweet pepper) the guacamole was definitely not fresh. The taco I had contained about more meat than it should and was so soggy from the sauce on the enchilada that I had to eat it with a knife and fork. And as an added bit of insult to the mess they put a piece of fresh avocado on top. That I didn't mind, but they left the skin on. WHY? Just take it off. I don't want to have to handle my messy food in this way. The rib was ok. The sauce was nice, and fell off the bone. Along with my meal came a big bowl of sauted potatoes, I could have chosen rice, but from viewing other people's meals, I could see it looked to be from a packet and there is nothing worse to me. Rice/Mexican rice is so so simple to make and cheaper than buying packets. But again this isn't my restaurant. I mean what do I know, I've only eat Mexican food for 32 years. My husband's, meal too was far too large for him; we both could have done with about half the portions on the plates. But I can only assume they do this to make up for the apparent lack of taste and the price. My husband ate of what he ordered. And again a little pretentiousness from the cooks they left the heads on his prawns which were covered in sauce. Again why? I felt there was no need for this. I thought their beef in both means was tasteless. One of the main spices in Mexican cooking is cumin, but not one ounce did we taste. My son well he's three so he ate the bread and a few bits of his dish of sogginess.
Price: Well the prices for what I consider now, one of the worse meals I have ever eaten, are very high in my opinion. I ordered some sour cream to accompany my dish. I received about 100 ml of sour cream which was £1.95. You can buy a small tub of 250ml of sour cream for 70p. So the markup seems silly to me. I mean I know you need to make a profit, but I felt that was just taking it beyond the need of profit. If profits are what they want, they could quite easily (as I do for myself) purchase the items locally and fresh, and make the food from scratch, a lot cheaper and with more flavor than their packaged items. Beans fresh beans for instance, can be made in advance, and frozen for convenience. They are very cheap to source and spice. A HUGE pan of beans made in the morning could last them all day. cost them maybe 10p a portion, and can be made into boracho beans, refried beans and plain pinto beans. This gives the customers 3 options and can be part of each meal, which would fill the plate with food and flavour. Corn tortillas too can be bought cheaply and taste 100% better than store bought, which can be used as an appetizer or even just given as a pre-starter with fresh home made salsa, again made fresh daily. I think that with very little effort this restaurant could make a real name for itself, with fresh food and ideas. But their apparent lack of effort has ensured I will never eat there again. For those who have never had real Mexican food, you may like this as, for me, it is not real and maybe more to your palettes, but for someone who knows what it is meant to taste like; this is the biggest disappointment I have had from a restaurant ever.

Myself and my husband had a meal there last night, and we were both very impressed with the quality of food and service. The waiting staff are always friendly and prompt. Most of the meals are served with either rice or chipped potatoes, and you do get a lot, plus plenty of salad. You can also choose from a range of fillings, such as chicken, beef or vegetables for fajitas, burritos or enchiladas etc. Plus, there is the Tex-Mex selection to choose from. There is also a very good drinks selection, from beers to cocktails (we shared a large jug of Margarita)! Plus, there is a menu for children too. Therefore, this place is also family orientated, and the starter dishes are quite large as well. The chances are that you are likely to leave the restaurant feeling stuffed. Pedro's also has 2-4-1 offers, which are well worth checking out in the local paper and on the sandwich board by the entrance.

I would recommend Pedro's to anyone. This was my third visit, but it is advisable to book a table in advance, as this place can get very busy and crowded, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. There is also a chance to wear a sombrero with your meal, which adds to the fun. Plus, Latino-American music is played for a lively atmosphere.

Pedro in Norwich has very yummy Mexican food, very large portions, friendly staff. Very lively atmosphere not suitable for a quiet meal. Look out for the 2-4-1 offers on the website.
