Touring Iceland:
If you use a tour company be sure you are really clear about your expectations. (e.g. if you only speak English or German make sure your guide has several years of experience guiding in that language.) Also, make sure you have a detailed itinerary and an itemized tour receipt so that you and the tour company have a paper record of what you paid for.) Our guide, was very inexperienced, had only a conversational understanding of English, and couldn't convey general Icelandic history or geologic concepts to us in English and based on the high cost of the tour we were understandably disappointed.

I travelled all around Iceland renting a Toyota RAV4, a small 4WD good for two, too small for three...we were three and tree rucksacks and my photographic stuff...well, it's really incredible. Be prepared if you're not used of adventure...roads are bumped everywhere, be able to understand a roadmap and if you're practical minded it'll be very good for you! Go to the inner part of Iceland, it's the most impressive. Huge landscapes, blue and deep sky, no trees and a stone desert (Sprengisandur) 300km wide...and it's not finished...you'll find a glacier (the biggest one in urope - 25000sqKM) over a volcano (Vatnajokull). If you like adventure you'll have a great satisfaction, crossing rivers with your jeep, sleeping everywhere you can...It's great!!
