“In general this Logitech Z-5300 5.1 THX Speakerset...”

★★★★★

written by Ville454 on 22/03/2005

In general this Logitech Z-5300 5.1 THX Speakerset made by Logitech is quite decent, the overall sound quality is very good, especially considering that they aren't very expensive. There are still some shortages according to the sound. The sound quality of this system depends very much of the room in which the speakers are listened. The sound quality varies a lot depending on the acoustic of the room. If acoustic isn't good enough, these speakers tend to boom out very much. I have had to tweak these speakers quite a lot to make them sound good in my computer room (For example, I had to fill the subwoofer with acoustic wool), but afterwards I have to state that I'm very happy with the sound quality that this speaker set can provide.

“After reading many reviews and customers thoughts of...”

After reading many reviews and customers thoughts of the Logitech Z-5300 5.1 THX Speakers I decided to buy them. The box in which they came was big and heavy, about 20 kg. The installation was easy although the wires weren't long enough, so I had to buy extenders. They are connected to subwoofer using cinch cables which are easy to get and not too expensive. I plugged them into my Audigy 2 ZS and burned them for about 5 or 6 hours. I did not found any flow in the speakers itself except in the music I was playing. I mean I was using mostly mp3 music and it is very easy to detect flaws in the sound file.
My mp3 files sounded incredibly crisp and clear, with many details with deep and loud bass. I used THX Subwoffer test and I can say that these speakers have great sub. The lows were very precise and without distorsion. Then I listened to some other music which was using more the mids and highs. The sound is great and thanks to aluminium phase plugs the highs were clean and with much details. In games the weapons have completely different sound and the sub gives them the "WOW" effect. These speakers can play very loud (I use them mostly on 3/7 LED on remote. A few words about the remote: It is big with thick wire but when you place it somewhere close to your hands (near the keyboard or mouse) you then realize how practical and easy to use this remote really is. It is easy to increase/decrease volume, adjust bass, centre speaker and fader.
These speakers are great and a really good investment and I wouldn't change them for any other speaker system in this price category.

“I upgraded to these Logitech Z-5300 5.1 THX Speakers...”

I upgraded to these Logitech Z-5300 5.1 THX Speakers from the Logitech Z-640's, and let me tell you the Z-5300's put them to shame. These bass on the Z-5300's keeps up with the treble until it hurts your ears. I still didn't know whether to buy these or not. But now i HIGHLY RECOMMEND them. But you have to match them with a decent sound card or you will sacrifice performance.

“I noticed that my previous review on Altec Lansing 621...”

★★★★★

written by ForrestGump on 29/04/2004

I noticed that my previous review on Altec Lansing 621 was pretty helpful to many people, so I thought I'd review a new set of speakers I just purchased.

Before purchasing these Logitech Z-5300 5.1 THX Speakers, I did quite some research on it on the internet. After reading several reviews which all of them gave a high rating for it, I decided to buy a set myself. I never got a chance to listen to it before buying so as usual I was rather skeptical.

Setting up the speakers was not very difficult, although I thought the manual was pretty much useless. However, the jacks were all colour coded so it was quite a breeze. Please take note that you need at least a 5.1 soundcard to get the best out of these speakers. They can be connected to any game consoles and can even emulate 5.1 sound using a built in 'matrix' mode from a 2 channel source. More about that later though.

First the sound test. Naturally, I compared this set to my Altec Lansing 621. I listened to a variety of music and wasn't really impressed at first. The sound quality was very good, on par with the 621's when it comes to music and even better at certain times. The high's produced were crisp and clear, although at higher volumes it was a bit ear piercing. I was wondering if the reason the speakers sounded so clear was because the treble was artificially boosted higher (still uncertain but it sounds damn good nevertheless). The midrange and bass sounded excellent as well, except for the fact that the bass can be a bit overwhelming in some music. I also happened to play a song which sounded good on the 621's and compared them. Boosting the volume up to the max, I heard the 'recording hiss' in the background. It is ONLY noticable in that particular song. I was amazed and taken aback. If the noise is not from the soundcard or the speakers, and from the recording itself, the speakers have to be of really good quality! Note that not all speakers can actually pick up noises from the recording of CDs. Overall the sound quality was excellent - music sounded the way it should be - there were no distortions at high volumes. They can go pretty loud as well, louder than the Altec 621.

Next up was DVD movie's and games. This was where the sound just blasted me away. Sound seperation was great and dialogue was crystal clear. Explosions sounded boomy and loud. So loud that table shook. Call of Duty sounded even better, it was like I was in a real battlefield. Gunshots, bombs, explosions were loud and immersive. Try playing a game with these speakers...!

The control pod was very well designed as well. You adjust the volume, bass, fader and center through a dial. A headphone jack is present and also a matrix mode. Basically the 'matrix' mode converts any 2 channel stereo to emulated 5.1 sound. Very handy feature for watching Anime and listening to music, although the sound clarity is reduced somewhat. Furthermore you can also hang the speakers on the wall. Its just so easy too. And they look damn sexy as well, with the speaker grills off. :)

The only gripe I have with these speakers are the fact that there is no wireless remote control. All in all, its an excellent set of speakers and has now replaced my aging Altec 621's. If you are looking for a 5.1 solution, don't go for anything lower than this. It costs more than entry level 5 speaker sets, but the money is well spent.

Hope this review was helpful! I got the speakers at AUD$225 in Melbourne. It's RRP is AUD$399. ^^
