“Best car yet.”

★★★★☆

written by on 28/04/2013

My third audi A3 after a 1.6 then 1.8SE. I love my car. I drive it like I hate it, and it responds to me. I put the best Goodyear tyres on it and have total confidence in the car for corners, wet weather and snow, etc. Mine came with an awesome BOSE sound system, and I had cruise control retrofitted. Handy for M25 roadwork speed limits! My only issue was that the EML came on and suggested on hook up that it had a thermostat valve open (reported 27 times) and the cat needs replacing reported just once). This is the second A3 that at 60,000 miles i've been told needs a cat conv replacing. It also thinks it has a coolant leak but doesn't, but this is easy to resolve with occasional slight top ups! However, I was not convinced there is a cat converter issue as the EML has been on for 18 months now and the car is running fine and with normal to low emissions, no blow, noise, smell or anything (despite Guildford Audi dealership telling me I needed it replacing urgently as it may blow up my engine...) I suggested to a local mechanic that if I fixed the thermostat valve I may resolve the EML issue. He said if the coolant is showing as low and the cat thinks it has a leak or collapse somewhere it could be the thermostat sensor. Fixing the thermostat solved everything, and for about 8% of the quoted price. My car is now 7 and I dont ever want to part with it.

“Disgusting customer service”

Car bought as an approved used car from Northampton Audi (Audi A3 2litre diesel). 2 years later car doesnt start. Taken to local specialist who diagnose that the dashboard had failed which was replaced. However they were unable to reprogramme the car as the chassis number of the car and ECU dont match. Car taken to approved Audi garage who confirm this problem. Not having done any work on the car prior to the fault where did this ECU come from? ECU replaced at our cost. However then unable to reprogramme as brand new dashboard isnt coded proeprly and we have to pay another £700 to replace a brand new dahsboard. No help or assistance from Audi UK nor will anyone accept responsibility.

2011 Audi A3 TFSI- bought brand new 1. water pump goes on 17000 km 2. gearbox gone on 19000 km This car has spent more time in the repair shop than on the road.Stay away from Audi as an alarming number of people are experiencing these very same problems. Great looking cars, unfortunately unsafe to drive.

Audi A3 2.0 fsi tiptronic. This was my first car, very eye-catching and performs like a dream when it is running. COrners exeptionally well and has power when you need it. It is not very fuel efficient,as it only gets 10km per litre on the open road and 9km per litre in urban areas. I had mechanical problems from 300km on the clock. Aircon pump broke and was replaced twice. The dealership put in an A4 aircon the third time. Gearbox broke on 50000km's and had to be replaced.as i am writing this review,it has broken yet again.BOth the sideshafts went on 60000km.the locking system became unresponsive and had to be replaced. All four the ignition coils broke on 78000km and broke yet again on 82000km.MY advice would be to never own an audi A3 out of motorplan and if you want to own this car make sure that it is not your only means of transport! I will NEVER buy an audi again.

I was happy with my a3 (2,0 fsi tiptronic) until i came up against gear problem. The problem was mechatronic apart and changing this cost me overall 2,500 euros. I was dissapointed when i realized that i'm not the only one having this problem so many audi owner, having stronic gear, also having trouble with the same problem. Lucky audi owners who is in guaranty repairs without charge but since my audi 6 years old i'm not among them. Finally i lose my desire against audi and honestly not recommend it.

We love our A3. The build quality is stunning, and not a creak/squeak to be heard.....even in a 7 year old car. Still looks brand new inside.
We went for the petrol engine in the end. We are trying to do our bit for the environment so nearly went for the TDI version. Thankfully this 150bhp engine will return 42mpg easily. We even see high 40;s on long runs to the seaside. Also the less servicing and oil changes of a petrol engine appealed to us.
I originally wanted a 5dr version, but wasn't keen on the look of the 5dr as its much longer and fatter at the back. So plumped for a 3dr. Thankfully its easy to get in and out of the back.
When we go to change the car we will buying another Audi as this one is well made. Having said that, it maybe some years till we feel the need to change.

I found this review very helpful because...I echo the sentiments contained therein. I've only had my A3 2L FSI since March this year 2010 and it's my first Audi , it certainly wo'nt be (hopefully) my last. The built quality is superb, seating excellent and the smell of quality leather enjoyable. I've not been lucky enough yet to achieve 42 or thereabouts MPG, however it's being mainly used in urban travel, with an occasional longish run , when she will , sometimes , creep up to around 40MPG. I'm going to try using 99octane fuel, which a local Tesco are now stocking ( she's petrol ) so things will hopefully improve . I've also been adding some Redex upper cylinder lubricant to give her injectors a clean up, hoping that'll do some good as well . All in all very happy with the car overall.

I have had my A3 2.0 FSi sport for 4 months. It's a 53 ref, but only had 25k miles on the clock and was clearly in mint condition when I bought it from an Audi dealer. Although it's been back to the dealer when the Emissions light came on, this was fixed on the same day and was covered under the approved used programme. I test drove quite a few cars in the range and felt the A3 was worth the extra money to the VW, Honda, etc. and particularly with the optional extras that came with it. The main point was that none felt as good to drive as the A3, which is sporty, yet refined. I like having the 6th gear just to boost the fuel economy. Overall I love the car, the Bose speakers and 6-CD changer help, but the handling on country roads is brilliant and it is about fast enough.

The Audi A3 is a great car, got it off an Audi dealer. Never let me down, economical and fast. I have owned BMW'S Merc's and the interior of the Audi puts them all to shame. Especially good when clad in leather and Alcantara. Great handling too.

Overall I am impressed with the Audi A3 2.0 FSi. On looks alone you could stare at it for hours. Having been a 6 cylinder BMW owner I do miss the turbine smoothness of a straight 6 however the FSI unit is good when worked. The 6 speed box takes some getting used to and I've never got myself in so many wrong gears before. As for the suspension, all I can say is that it's work in progress!!!. Did anyone from Audi actually test the A3 on anything other than a snooker table?.

I've had my Audi A3 2.0 FSi for 2 years now, and I can recommend it. I find it comfortable on long journeys, and it has a big car feel about it (I previously had A4's). The performance is adequate but not startling, and you need to use the gears a lot to get any sort of acceleration at motorway speeds. However, I really wish I'd gone for the 2.0 litre turbo diesel, which gives comparable performance with good fuel economy. I've had problems with the windscreen wipers suddenly failing, the air bag warning light permanently on, and the cruise control intermittently refusing to work. Each of these problems has been looked at by Audi specialists, and the only one they've managed to fix properly is the wipers. That's not the car's fault.

I too am experiencing windscreen wiper failure at inopertune moments. The garage states they are unable to find fault. What can I do to convince them otherwise?

Hi. I believe there was a fault with the wiper motor which incorrectly detected overheating and stopped the wipers. After about an hour they would start to work again. This happened to me 3 times (twice in dangerous conditions). In the end I told the garage I was refusing to drive the car - they supplied a courtesy car, took mine away and fixed it (after about 3 weeks). It has been perfect since. BTW the second time it happened, the recovery service man sent by Audi told me it was not the first time he had seen the fault. I'm sure Audi know all about it. Good luck.

Tiptronic changes mounted on the drivewheel and the computer showing real time fuel economy and exterior temperature are great details. The Audi A3 2.0 FSi has a 6 cd changer on dashboard, sport seats and climatronic are excellent features. Excellent personal car for business.

★★★★☆

written by pmcnamar on 28/06/2004

This is now my second Audi A3 2.0 FSI Sport Car and I had a 2.0 FSI SE for a couple of months also. I changed a new Celica for the first A3, and was impressed with the quality and finish, but not the performance.

After 3 months, the steering failed on the A3 (on the road - scary). That car also used large amounts of very expensive oil. The engine was good, very economical and smooth (must have been all that oil then). The Sports suspension is very firm, to the point that on a B-road you'd be hard pushed to adjust the radio thanks to your arm bouncing away. I found that the steering wheel adjustment was never quite right, despite playing with it for ages.

Once my first A3 was off the road (steering), I had a green A3 SE for a time. This came with a lovely 'white' interior which was vile! I had that for a couple of weeks before the rear bumper started to hang off, followed by the engine packing up thanks to faulty ECU components. Last seen being towed away in London.

My latest A3 Sport is going well (touch wood) with 1,000 miles on the clock. It seems more economical than the others, and uses much less oil. As before, sports suspension and larger wheels means it provides a solid but harsh ride. The image, in fairness, is everything. I'd rather be an Audi driver than a BMW driver (and I've had both, in the past). Despite some early problems, I'd recommend an Audi A3 to anyone thinking of buying one.

I've just suffered a power steering sensor failure on my A3 2.0 FSi SE. As my warranty ended last year I was faced with a bill of £1207 of which Audi UK paid 40% towards the cost of the repair. Has anyone else had steering problems with their A3's?

My 2005 A3 2.0 FSI SE Sportback has an annoying whine in the steering when going round corners. I have had the gearbox replaced but it still makes the same sound.
<br/>Do any other owners of this model have similar problems.

The new Audi A3 SE is stunning inside and out. I am disappointed that some build quality faults were not found by Audi quality control checks at the factory, or at the dealer.
My main concern is that I find the suspension far too firm. Strangely enough it's OK (just) over bumps, but annoyingly skittish and bumpy over relatively smooth surfaces.
I wonder if I have the optional extra sports suspension by mistake(and how do I check?), or was this standard on the 2.0 FSI SE when my March 2004 car was made in Sept 2003? If mine is standard I cannot imagine who would want even stiffer sports suspension.

written by Paul. on 03/07/2003

Having owned several BMW cars, the Audi A3 test drive was a pleasant suprise. The new Audi A3 looks and drives better than the BMW compact. The engine does not sound as good as the 318ti engine and the gearbox is not as good but the steering is better as is the handling (in my opinion).

There are some nice touches, like cup holders (not on BMW) and the indicator switch gives a three blink signal when you push it half way which is great for lane change signals.

Ordered for delivery in September and definitely recommended.
