“Cheap and cheerful!”

We've just got back from Caleta Dorada and had a really lovely time, but we aren't the kind of people who let the small things bother us. From the outside the complex looks really nice, I think they must spend most of their money maintaining the outside of the properties, but the inside of our 'bungalow' wasn't so lovely. There were broken lightbulbs in the bathroom, the telephone wasn't working so we couldn't ring reception, the window in my daughters bedroom was broken and our beds were very uncomfy. We also felt that for a 'self-catering' property, facilities were very limited. I think that if we'd gone to reception we could have paid a deposit for a toaster and kettle, but weren't told. All we had was a fridge, two hobs and pots and pans (as well as plates and cutlery.) None of this really bothered us - We didn't pay much for the holiday, the weather was gorgeous, and we were only 15 minutes walk from the beach. My daughter loved the pool but could only manage about an hour or so a day before she got too cold. The constant wind can make things cooler, especially when the sun goes behind clouds. The pools were lovely, and it was nice that there was a small kids one (the main one is pretty deep everywhere.) The area around the pool could get a bit grubby, I felt it should have been cleaned more often during the day. There was a constant small of pee on one side of the childrens pool, which made it difficult to sit there, and because of spilt children's slushy drinks I often found my feet sticking to the floor! I can't really comment on food as we weren't all inclusive and didn't try the restaurant, but the food at the pool bar was quite basic - hot dogs and sandwiches only. There is however, lots of restaurants nearby. The mini disco every evening was fab for my daughter, and there seemed to be lots of entertainment, during the day and in the evenings. Lastly, if you don't like cats, you won't like this property. A lot of strays seem to live in the area as they're looked after by a charity that leaves food out for them nearby. They're harmless, but do like to sleep on the warm patios. Overall, a good holiday, in a lovely on the outside, OK on the inside property, but I don't think we'll be going back.

“Loved every minute!”

After visiting this site, I was a little worried about what this hotel was going to be like. First impressions, when checking in the lady on the desk was very polite, friendly and spoke good enlish. You don't get shown to your apartment but they hand you a map and we found ours easily. Our apartment was very clean and we couldn't see why people had complained on here about them, the outside of the apartments are neat looking although if you look in depth at them you will see small areas that could do with a re-paint, but I think you'd have to be really fussy for it to bother you. Next, the food & drink. The resturant was nicely presented, the food was gorgeous, there was plenty of choice to suit different tastes. My only negative would be the breakfasts weren't the best but I think thats because of it being buffet style the bacon & eggs were sometimes not great, also the juice didn't taste right was more like really strong squash. Drinks at the bar throughout the day & evening were fine as far as my family and I could tell were not watered down, served in roughly half pint clear plasic glasses & you were able to order 2 drinks at a time per person. There was good variety on the spirits and their lager is nice I thought. The queue for the bar was really long at times but the staff were very fast serving & therefore the queue went down with in 5 minutes. Finally the entertainment. Once more I cannot think of anything majorly negative to say about the entertainment. Only that during the day it was the same things every day. They did table tennis, football and waterpolo everyday for both adults and kids (seperatly). As well as these activities they'd throw in others such as competitions in the pool like racing down the slides and colouring competitions for the kids etc. The nightime entertainment was fantastic they had mini disco everynight for kiddies then bingo (most nights), then either a show or a quiz or a karaoke, I could go on but I'm sure you get the jist! We were the 2 weeks and the shows weren't repeated. The entertainment staff were amazing, they put in long hours and tried to get everyone involved in activities without being pushy. All I can say is that we try not to visit the same place over and over, but with this place I can see why people would go back year after year. Loved every minute!!

Just got back from a weekend break at Caleta Dorada, the hotel is lovely, the staff were always polite helpfull and cheerfull, our room, 150, was clean and well equipped, and the food was lovely, its a great place for families, couples, and singles, we used the hotel as a starting point, taking full advantage of the all inclusive drinks before taking the short walk to the bars and clubs in the town, the entertainment staff and bar staff were great fun and the kids loved them,, we would certainly return to this hotel.

just spent a week with my husband at caleta dorada in caleta de fuste.unfortunately the complex is more for familys.though it did say couples also.we are in our fifties and am afraid apart from one night entertainment wasnt for us! hence the reason we spent a fortune outwith the complex on entertainment venues! We were all inclusive and.. food was very acceptable.Drinks however were not very palatable everything seemed to be watered down! even fruit juices !Staff were very pleasant at all times and accomodation was cleaned every day except one.Met other couples of similar age and younger who had same grumbles as us.weather was wonderful as usual but sorry wouldnt go back!By end of day three meeeny deeesco was driving us daft!Only two animators day and night felt quite sorry for them.Despite worrying about reviews we read about breakins there was nothing at all like this!Love kids by the way we have grandchildren but this was our break and am afraid just didnt take off!

“my holiday at caleta dorada”

★★★★☆

written by on 07/09/2011

my daughter and i stayed at the caleta dorada for our fourth vist to fuerteventura and we had a nice time dispite that fact that first choice had gone, the weather was great like always nice and sunny and hot the in the resturant could've been improved as some nights there was nothing that my daughter would eat, the entertainment staff could have been better but there was only two of them to entertain the guests during the day and in the evening to be honest the young lady did'nt have a clue half the time and the man was doing his best but when first choice were there it was so much better because they had more entertainers there and they would even get in the pool with the kids and play with them for awhile but it was like that with the two they had there.i also felt alittle surprised by some of the younger spanish guests as one day a spanish boy about five or six decied to go to the tiolet in front of the sunbeds it was something that my daughter and i didn't wish to see to was disgusting along with a young spanish girl of around seven washing in the shower pulling her bikini bottoms away to wash her backside and private area also something that my daughter and i did not want to see also a young english boy went to the tiolet on the floor of the men's toilet i wonder where his parents where when he was doing this probally sunbathing and not paying to much attention to what their son was doing . one night the man's laptop crashed so the bingo had to be restarted and some of the shows we had seen before .so i think when i go away again i will be staying at a different hotel in fuerteventura as i wont go back to the club caleta dorada untill first choice use it again and from what i was told the manager did not want them there anymore which is such as shame as the entertainers were really good in 2006 and when we went in 2009 i for one missed them not being there what do other people think of their stay at the caleta dorada in 2011

“Just got back from Caleta de Fuste, Caleta Dorada...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by si4560 on 07/06/2009

Just got back from Caleta de Fuste, Caleta Dorada yesterday 6th june 2009 after a 14 night break here. Like many other people read reviews and was concerned about breakins/staff issues etc on many websites. When you have family with 2 children and an infant you want to know that everybody will have a safe fun holiday!!! Booked with First choice and won't be going back nor will many other people that were there. There was 2 breakins- first week there and was told being over exagerated there was 6 in total for the 2 weeks. When you are next to people either side of you who have been broken into and people from other rooms are chasing people at silly o'clock in the morning knowing money being stolen via backdoors on apartments then it is not being over exagerated!!! Please if you booked or are going check your patio doors had to fix it myself every other day wheel kept coming off runner maintenance called 3 times still didn't fix it. Holes in wall lights hanging off general maintence not being done,no staff in the c bar you will be serving yourself at 8pm self service. lunchtime be prepared to wait un to 20 mins for some chips, for the kids. General cleanleness not good they clean pool area in the morning only so the chairs food/ standard of loungers stay the same until the follwing morning. THE KIDS REPS/ENTERTAINERS are very good and it is a shame because they are all hardworking very nice peoplebut the resort standard lets it all down plus the breakins!! I slept on a sofa bed infront of the patio doors many others bordered up ther windows and the manager rep were having meeting to try get 1 extra security guard (2 in total) the whole situatuation what with breakins no staff the general cleanliness not good. As I was told NOT FIRST CHOICES PROBLEM well it is.

“Arrived 09/02/08 at reception, 2 adults & 2 children,...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/02/2008

Arrived 09/02/08 at reception, 2 adults & 2 children, very unhelpful reception staff who gave us a map to the Bungal, 10 minutes away with no help & all uphill. The bungalow apartment Stank of must and everything felt damp, we asked at reception but were told we couldn't move rooms. The patio door was dodgy as was the children's bedroom window lock, we asked the maintenance man to fix it and was told it was fine!!
We spent 20 Euro's paying for a hairdryer, remote for TV, & safety box, which was returned at the end of our stay. The rooms were dirty, paint peeling, no coffee/tea etc. & the shop on site very expensive. We have always gone on All Inclusive holiday where all things like this have been provided, also no complimenary soaps etc.
The patio was dirty with ants and table not clean, also you could wave to the airoplanes landing as you are right under the flight path, start at 5.30 am until 1.00am, so take your ear plugs!!!!
The only place to eat was the oriental restaurant which was being used for all meals breakfast dinner & tea all poor quality with no variation in choices, no cheeses, fruit, and dirty tables. The only other place to eat was the C side pool bar with chips, chips, burgers, hotdogs which were cold & under cooked ... beware ... all the other restaruants that were advertised on the website were all closed !!!!
The C side pool was not heated so it was sub zero, we asked and was told the pump was broken, only the brave went in! this to was dirty, with cups, glasses, and dirty tables left there for days, until one of the bar staff cleaned on the Wednesday. The B side was full so no sunloungers were available. they got the heated pool....
It was 10 mins in a taxi to the town as a steep walk back & beware it was full of Timeshare conmen, we nearly fell for it, also the trips are cheaper it the town. Other people moaned about the food & smelly rooms and cracked tiles round the pool & how cold the water was... I have never complained before. Also the entertainment was good if you were under the age of 10 years old.
The whole complex needs a lot of maintenance and more staff, they should not be charging full price with only a quarter of the bars, restaurants being open, I feel they should close for a month and re paint the whole lot!!!! all very unhappy......

“I certainly won't be going to Caleta Dorada in...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by hayleeeeeeeeeeeeee on 10/09/2006

I certainly won't be going to Caleta Dorada in Fuerteventura again! Everything looked nice in the brochure, and it stated it was a 3 star complex etc. Visiting it, it doesn't look too bad. However, it was disgusting, as was the food. I had to go looking through a pile of plates just to find a clean one. The pools were dirty too. A family a couple of apartments down from us got broken into, and all their stuff was stolen and the place was totally ransacked. When we found out, we had a look at our windows and they appeared to have marks on, as if someone had tried to break in. However, the reception staff and the First Choice reps were brilliant, and they offered us a free upgrade to Correlejo in a 4 star hotel, which was lovely. Fuerteventura is a lovely place, and the weather is fantastic.

“I'll try to be objective about most of the All...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Sandy Cates on 08/09/2006

I'll try to be objective about most of the All Inclusive fortnight spent in Club Caleta Dorada, but there will be certain aspects where that's just not possible.

Arrival, transfer and check-in were all handled very well and quickly by First Choice and the hotel staff and we were in our accommodation within 30 minutes of the coach pulling up outside. We were located in the B section of the complex, which although quieter is less modern than the newer C section. Consequently, our chalet could best be described as tired looking and in need of some real TLC. Patched up floor tiles, broken kitchen cupboard doors, tatty (but working) fridge, paint peeling in the bathroom - but it was clean. We also had a brand new microwave delivered on the third day. There is no air-con and each chalet only gets one fan for the two rooms, so either ask nicely at reception for another or you can hire one for 12 Euros a week, which we did as it aided a decent night's sleep. We decided that we were only going to be in the room to sleep, so the broken bits weren't really a problem and so there was no point kicking up a fuss about a tatty looking fridge.

FC say that some aircraft noise "may" be experienced. The complex is directly underneath the flight path and close enough to the airport that the planes are very low, so noise is inevitable. Flights seemed to start around 07:30 and finished around 23:00. We didn't really find this a problem; although there were a few days when the frequency of flights increased, so do be aware of this before you book. Also the complex is quite spread out and parts are divided by public roads, so it's worth drumming road safety into your kids.

Choice of food has been mentioned on other reviews, but the menu hardly ever varies. Toast takes forever, especially at the busier times of the morning. Glasses at the bar are at a premium, but drinking from a paper cup is hardly the end of the world although it would be nice if the British could pick up after themselves.

By far the best part (for us and the kids) was the entertainment - or more specifically, the entertainment staff. They worked extremely hard and seemed to have a real passion for what they were doing, and did it really well. Daytime events are there if you can be bothered, the mini-disco was always a laugh for the younger ones, games kept everyone amused and even if bingo isn't your thing - it lasts less than 15 minutes and the prize money is very good (€40 - €200) for a €1 ticket. The evening shows, either in house or those by local acts were varied and very well presented.

Unfortunately, this is where the positive and objective comments finish.

Our main problem during our stay was the C Pool. After only one day on site, both our children came up in a very nasty rash in the more delicate areas of their anatomy, which we initially put down to new swimwear, the sun cream or the heat. However, after a couple of days and various conversations around the pool, it seemed it was widespread, and a large number of children and some adults were affected. FC and the hotel would not admit that there was a problem, even after a large number of families complained, and to be honest went out of their way to blame anything other than the pool water. After more pressure and an independent test of the water, the hotel called out a local doctor, who quite honestly seemed annoyed that he was there. Creams and lotions were prescribed and I spent the next day either at the doctor's surgery or hospital with my seven year old daughter getting second opinions and more creams.

Ultimately, the hospital's opinion was that the pool water was to blame, and we should keep her out of the pool - easier said than done. Despite seeing the pool records that suggested the chlorine and pH levels were fine, a further test conducted in front of a group of parents proved that the main pool had virtually no chlorine - although FC would still not admit that this was dangerous or even a problem! More chlorine was added in the evening, so the next day the pool was better, but by the following day the problem was back. Also, be wary of the C paddling pool as this bleached a number of baby's swimsuits from blue to pink, or pink to white whilst we were there.

Whilst we were there, both my wife and I had throat infections; there were numerous ear infections and one hospitalization for a chest infection - none of which were helped by the pool or the poor cleanliness outside of the chalets. For example, throughout the 2 weeks the ladies toilet at the C Pool had no soap (despite many comments to hotel and FC staff), and this was replicated in many of the communal toilets around the complex.

Food hygiene is also suspect to say the least, all meals are buffet style (with the exception of the Mediterranean in the evening) but left uncovered, so that flies are a real problem inside and out. Lunchtime BBQ meat should be avoided unless they've persuaded the chef to use different utensils for the raw and cooked meat and to also keep the raw meat covered before transfer to the BBQ.

The menu seems to run in three day cycles, so you'll know what you're getting before you get to the restaurant, and the left over food from the evening appears to be heated over and served again at lunchtime. Drinks are mostly self-service, but a large proportion of the crockery, glasses and cutlery are either badly chipped or are still dirty when put out for use again.

All of which may have contributed to why the majority of the people there during the second of our two weeks were violently ill (S & D), including my two children. Which is why we requested, and got, a refund on our All Inclusive basis and started to eat outside of the complex - and we then had the best food of the two weeks. If you're having problems with the food, I would definitely suggest you ask for this as an option. Alternatively, you could do what approximately 20 families did and refuse to stay on the complex and get FC to move you elsewhere on the island.

This brings me onto the FC front office reps. They are either not bothered or they just have no clue about what they're doing. One prime example is being left outside reception with 30 other people waiting for a coach to take us to Baku (the water park) only to be informed that the trip had been cancelled without any of us being told. No apology, no words of consolation - even the supervisor was unconcerned about how amateur this made FC look.

Overall the site has some very fundamental problems which FC need to address if they're to continue to market this as a 3 star complex. I didn't expect the Ritz, but for the money we paid I certainly expected better than we got - and that basic hygiene measures would be observed.

Health & Safety really needs to be improved - there were various store rooms and cupboards (including the plant room where the pool chemicals were stored) left open and easily accessed by children, smoking in the bar cooking areas, wet floors at the top of stone/marble staircases, hand rails on steps were very loose and the steps on C pool were so loose they nearly came away in my hands. There was also what appeared to be an earth wire (possibly for the pool lights) which should have been connected to the pool steps, but had come away as they were so loose.

Others had more problems than us - and more illness - whilst some were completely spared. There were also reports of a few break-ins plus the police were called at a least once to a couple of Spanish blokes who appeared to be showing too much interest in the kids playing in the splash zone. Possibly innocent - but again not something you want to have to deal with on holiday.

Ask my kids and they would go back, mostly because of the friends they made and the kids clubs/entertainment - personally, my two week break was at times more stressful and problematic than being at work.
