“Not worth the paper it’s written on”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ninapip on 01/04/2022

I had a policy for over 10 years. Churchill happily took my money every month and raised the premium every year. I stayed loyal. Upon my dog needing emergency treatment, Churchill refused to pay out stating as the dog hadn’t been kept in a drip overnight the treatment wasn’t an emergency? The vets were as stunned as we were. This was with covid rules, the vets full, the dog kept home over night for emergency splenectomy the next morning. The procedure was an emergency to save his life. Unfortunately, the cancer was spreading quicker than realised and we lost out 13 year old family pet. Then had to find the money to pay for the treatment. And still Churchill are trying to claim off us for an unmade monthly payment! Never again will I use Churchill for any type of insurance. My family have also since cancelled policies with them. Pay for your expensive tv adverts with my policy money.. I no longer day .. yes

“Not advisable if you think your pet will exceed 11 years”

★★☆☆☆

written by IsraelVaughan481 on 15/01/2022

I would not recommend Churchill pet insurance if you feel that your pet will live more than 11 years of age or you may have to have your pet put to sleep as you will NOT be covered by this policy on its death, nor will you receive its purchase price. If you could be bothered at this stage to get a vet to prove that euthanasia was applied humanely you may get a token payment of £70.00. Also a 20% deduction in your cover will be applied to any claim of an older pet despite your premiums being increased year after year. Our dog lived until 17 years of age and we made only 2 claims in its life time. Obviously as your pet gets older certain illness will incur and thats when you need the cover so I would not advise this policy.

“They use the tiniest of loopholes to not pay. Beware! ”

written by Craigv168 on 09/03/2020

My dog had to be put to sleep with an unexpected ruptured spleen which was beyond repair, alongside pain relief and scans the bill came to £765,churchill refused to payout any amount owing to a pre existing condition.. 7 months previous!! Whereupon she had a lump on her leg where she received medication and the lump went down. How they relate the two is beyond any belief! Case will be forwarded to the ombudsman, whereupon sanity should prevail. I used Churchill for many years with no problems but in the last few years, as many others have said.. Definitely one to avoid.

“Over a barrel”

★★☆☆☆

written by Gibsonzh474 on 02/06/2016

Once and only once my cat & dog reached over ten years old they wrote to tell me that a 20% Mandatory Co-insurance now applied. I can go elsewhere but existing conditions would be excluded. I completely missed any advisory note informing me of the co-insurance & feel utterly furious about it. Dog has just had cruciate repair & cat, after an emergency over-nighter, many tests, ECG, scan & cardiologist consultation, has IBD. As a result of Churchill's Mandatory Co-insurance, I am hugely out of pocket & still in debt to my poor vet. Had they made their Co-insurance intent clearer when I still had the option to change insurers, I would have done so in a heartbeat. During a heated discussion about the co-insurance I suggested that I may apply a co-premium to them but was advised that my policy would be cancelled. I would not choose Churchill Pet Insurance again & I would actively discourage anyone considering them.

Rang Churchill and said my cat is ill and asked what would happen. Churchill replied that they will only pay £500 for initial treatment and anything else is out of our pocket!! Read your policies if you are with them Do not go with this company, I am paying £13 a month for this, avoid!!

“Excellent and compassionate staff and service”

★★★★★

written by MadisynAbernathy8 on 10/04/2015

i was unfortunate enough to have to make various claims throughout the lifetime of my dog but on each and every occasion Churchills response was excellent and pay outs made within timescales and without question. The staff who dealt with each of my claims were caring, compassionate and extremely helpful. Unfortunately my claim limit was £3000 which did not fully cover my final claim after serious illness suffered by my dog. However I was fully aware of this and policy limitations beforehand. It's a pity that Churchill do not offer more extensive cover as I would have no hesitation in choosing them again

“insurance won't pay out”

written by Velezkt181 on 24/09/2014

Took out insurance on my king charles spaniel, thinking my dog was insured paid for three years then when his leg had swollen and painfull took him to the vet,he was x-rayed, put on tramadol, and anti inflammatory tablets.Vet still could not make a diagnosis, sent claim to Churhill who refused to pay out as it was not an emergency, the dog had been in pain and taken right away to vet, what do they class as an emergency. Had to pay £800 this policy is not worth the paper it is written on, I am not even sure it's legal. The company the size of Churchill need to look into this and pay out.

“Excellent service from Churchill”

★★★★★

written by on 23/06/2014

My cat tore a ligament in her knee and needed urgent treatment costing £520. Within 2 weeks of making a claim Churchill paid the full amount less my £55 excess. Their customer service is very efficient and my calls were answered within seconds. The monthly premiums are very reasonable at just £5.70pm and I have recommended Churchill to all my friends.

“Absolute rip off- bunch of sharks”

written by on 31/10/2013

My dog had to have his tail amputated as an emergency over the August bank holiday. He was on a morphine drip and very ill. He had to go to the emergency vets over the weekend as there was no way I was qualified to care for him at home. Despite letters from my own vet and the emergency vet, Churchill refuse point blank to pay out for this hsopitalistaion as in their opinion, it wasnt essential. As far as my vet is converened it was the emergency vet or a dead dog! Do not use this company, they make every excuse possible not to pay out. They pay the absolute minimum they can get away with. Steer clear.

“OMG”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Tyers on 30/05/2012

I found a lump, rather large one on my dog on Sunday. Very concerned we took him to the vets on monday. Due to the sudden appearance and the size and because it could not be determined exactly what this was, they recommended immediate removal. This has amounted to a £554.00 bill which Churchill, after informing them of this, about 25 seconds later stated that we aren't covered and it is for emergency accident cover only. the policy does state that this policy covers us for up to £500.00 for sudden illness and the vet confirmed that due to the location of the lump and the now knowing what it was, my dog would be suffering. i rang another agent who also said, i could increase the cover, thank you i really feel i want to do that, but wouldnt be able to claim for this incident. i am so upset at this and consider that it is another get out clause for them and would never insure through them again. RIP OFF MERCHANTS.

Same thing happened to me - now going through ombudsman. I only insured with Churchill because it states " Emergency accident and illness" - if mast cell tumour is not an emergency illness what the hec is ?? My bill is nearly £700. I will never use Churchill again for anything and will make sure anyone else I know does not either. They are dishonest and word the policy in an obscure way to deceive pet owners.

I also went through the ombudsman who advised that in their opinion, Churchill were correct with their decision, hopefully, this will be different for you but don't build up your hopes! Please let me know the outcome. just to rub salt in the wounds, the ombudsman then sent me a survey to ask about my satisfaction with their service! Good Luck!

“COMPLETE SCAM”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/04/2012

We took out our pet insurance with churchills as we "thought" they were a repitable company....WE WERE SOOO WRONG!..When we took out the policy, we called to confirm that if our dog became ill we could make a claim, this due to being ripped off a few years prior with our old dog. They said yes this is the policy you need. We are now in our third year, having stayed with them, paying £35 a month. Our dogs legs were buckling under him and he was struggling to breath, so we took him to the vets. He has been on 5 differrent tablets, had many blood tests done, loads of xrays to name some of the treatment he needed. We called churchills and they said we were only covered for emergencies!...What a joke! This is not what was said when we took out the policy years before. We are now in legal proceedings, as we feel they have missold this to us. So far we have spent about £1000. IF YOU LOVE AND CARE FOR YOUR PET, STAY WELL AWAY FROM THEM!

“Complete rip off”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/03/2012

I recently made a claim regarding my dogs shoulder!! Churchill initially refused to pay stating my dog had previously had a previous condition for his leg. This was a condition relating to a puppy which had cleared up. My vet sent a report disputing their findings stating his condition was bursitis in his shoulder. Churchill then accepted this but then refused to pay out because in previous vet notes there was mention of a stiff elbow!! Something which was never treated nor claimed for. Churchill's basis is that my dog must have had bursitis in his elbow at the time which is somehow linked to his shoulder!! This company will look for anything to get out if paying up. My vet states you cannot get bursitis in an elbow. I will be passing this on to the FInancial Services Ombusman but i won't hold my breath.

“Teribble claims service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Rob_ross on 07/02/2012

Had Churchill Pet insurance for nearly 12 months when had to make a claim, dog had an ear infection. Churchill asked for the pets TOTAL medical records from the birth of the dog! They then waited 4 weeks before calling me to say that they would not pay the claim as their nurse had reviewed all her notes and had linked her ear infection to one other 12 months before.. I called my vet (Churchill would not do this) and he explained that it is impossible to link such cases so I asked Churchill how they had, they would only say that their Nurse had decided and they took this over the Vet! I asked for the claim to be reviewed and they said this would be done indpendlay (by their customer review team) - Cancelled insurance and moved on... DO NOT BUY FROM CHURCHILL COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY..

I just want to point out that this is not for life cover. It is per condition, so once your dog has used up the benefits for that condition, you are on your own.

Extremely helpful customer services - recently found problem with my policy which had accidentally been cancelled by them some time ago, they let me back date the policy and pay the full premium and make a claim immediately - can't say fairer than that !! (although they had cancelled the policy by mistake, I hadn't checked my statements either to see that the money wasn't being taken from the account by DD). In all although they don't cover as much as other more expensive companies I would certainly recommend them as a very good honest insurance company (which it seems that many aren't and will try and wiggle out of paying you)

A good policy for anyone with a new or younger dog. I didn't like that they only offered 5% online discount, I liked Direct Line's £20 towards vaccinations offer, but still decided to go with Churchill as they were the cheapest provider.

“I had been with Churchill for 11 years, my premiums...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/12/2007

I had been with Churchill for 11 years, my premiums suddenly went up 280% in one year, even though I had not made a claim that year. I understand that as my dog was now 13 that the chance of making a claim is higher but the premium increase was almost threefold and an astounding jump in price. I am going elsewhere for my insurance

This review just highlights the general problem with all Pet Insurance i.e. when your pet gets old they all charge you a lot more. Its not something unique to any insurer, in fact there are some like Pet Plan who charge even more for old pets than a value for money player such as Churchill.
