This NEC ND-1100A DVD burner is a joke. Every disc is a coaster with a seek complete error. Mine is an OEM and Dell has no firmware updates.

Basically, Burning DVD's at 4X with the NEC ND-1100A is totally unusable. Maybe two or three tries out of ten results in a usable disc.
No matter what media or software I used, this drive would constantly produce bad burns at anything other than 1x speed, which pretty much defeats the purpose.
I will definitely not be buying any more NEC drives after this experience.

The NEC ND-1100A would be the best drive for the money ($50 for a DVDRW drive is great), if you would not have to fix it yourself later. I read of the same problem all over the internet, most people just buy a new one, I got lucky and could fix the problem (after several months of trying and research).
I did not experience the slowness problem at all, its an amazingly fast and quiet drive and it has never burned a cdr that did not work perfectly.

my rewiew was on 29th Dec 2004, sorry but i barely remember, since then i changed DVDrw drive 2x, look for that bios on the internet, i do not have that anymore and links we cant post here anyways, google - that how i found it, you can get a used DVDrw this days for like $30 and a reader for $10, you have to know if that $20 diference is worth the trouble

You only get what you pay for i'm affraid. I Bought this Mirror NEC ND-1100A DVD Writer a few months ago, its slow, wont recognise disks, loads of coasters. Have since bought the sony +/-R burner £20 more Worth its weight in Gold. Faster quieter has never burnt a coaster much better all round. The savings on the disks have paid the price difference already.
So in summary...........You Only Get What You Pay For !

I have just bought some DVD's to burn and found exactly this problem - 1st time I have tried to use burner - thought the hardware was faulty!
It came installed in my new Dell computer. This review has saved me lots of fiddling around - only question - which blank DVD's does it recognise????

Thats not true, mine recognised any dvd's fine a few months later it wont recognise any dvdr's, searching on "ND-1100A recognise" you find large amount of people having same problem but no solution, they have a very short life time and no warrantty usualy, mine worked fine for 3 months and had only 30 days waranty

on xp and up you do not need drivers for it, i cant help you this happened like 4-5 years ago, just get a new DVD writer for $5 - $10, they brand new in the store like $25 its not worth to play around with it anymore

Can you give us a step by step so we can try? I am at my wits end. I can't even find the original driver for mine and HP is no help at all. I had to buy a new OS and do away with HP's recovery disks so I can't access the drivers from that anymore.

It means with a little program you delete the original software and copy a new one on to the dvd-drive, this means of course you void any warranty and if something goes wrong you can destroy your derive. In my case I had nothing to lose,I could throw the thing out or fix it myself, it worked for me the 5th time I tryed and I'm an "expert".

hi, what does flash firmware mean and how do i get my nec nd-1100a to recognise + and - r instead of just +r's? Would be grateful for any help thankyou.

Also I just flash the nec 1100a firmware to a nec 1300a v 1.0a so now its a -/+ format drive - cool or what.

Actually the next day I wrote that I gave it one more shot, I over wrote sucesfully the firmware with an unofficial version downloaded from the internet, it works great now, it recognises as a 1300 not a 1100 but same deal.

Mine is still working great eventhough I use it everyday.

Yes its very fussy on dvd won't read some dvd-r. It is hard to rip to hard drive unless its on a +r I'm getting another one when the cost come down again.
Go for a Liteon or Panasonic unit.

I just got one from a friend who has been saying he has the same problems as everybody else. I'm interested in how you fixed yours(what programs you used and where you got them from). Are there any manuals to help fix it? I'm kinda a noob at this kinda thing so anyhelp would be great!
