The Phantom of the Opera is a haunting classic, Lon Chaney in the lead role is fantastic - he delivers a magnificent performance and is genuinely scary at times. If you are a fan of more recent horror movies I would definitely recommend that you watch this as most of the films you watch today will have been influenced by this and other films from the same era.
