Brand new 1.6 DTI 2010, two weeks old and had to have a new box fitted, ever since then I have been getting a banning sound now and then.I tend to keep cars for three years, cant wait to get rid of this one. Mind you the doors are quite when you close them.

“BRILLIANT RUNAROUND”

lOOKS GOOD AND DRIVES WELL. VERY ECONOMICAL. WOULD HAVE PREFERED THE 5 DOOR AS THE 3 DOOR, THE DOORS ARE TOO BIG AND DIFFICULT GETTING OUT OF THE GARAGE. FANTASTIC VALUE FOR MONEY. WOULD RECOMEND THIS MAKE.

what ever you do people do not buy the 1.4 1.6 mk4 golf, skoda fabia ,skoda octivia ,1.4, seats they all have gear box problem. when the gear boxes have been either hard driven or reached a high mileage they tend to fail estimated failure mileage is around 96K .. so do your self a favour get ur self a TDI or GTI since they are better built gear boxes but defo sure the mk4 golf tdi are reliable and good fuel consumption and cheap on insurance if you buy the 90bhp version not the 110 bhp so good luck =]

★★☆☆☆

written by on 19/04/2011

Have just bought a VW golf 1.6se automatic 2000 reg. Thought i couldnt go wrong buying a Volkswagen, but how wrong i was.

Terrible drive and handling plus the automatic gearbox races and struggles to find fourth gear. Just paid 2 grand for this car with only 66k miles and cambelt changed. Be interested to hear of any other drivers experiencing same problem on the automatic.

Car is going back to garage where purcased from. Bloody frustrating.

Had i known this beforehand about the reliability on the auto gearbox i would have walked away.

Would certainly never consider buying a Volkswagen again for the remainder of my life expectancy.

Had the same 2001 1.6 auto clutch slipping at 40k miles yes 40! Turned out needed new gearbox, ended up losing a grand on it, never again.

I bought an 1.6 SE golf about a month ago. It is a lovely looking car but it is taking a lot of getting used to. I find that you have to give the car quite a lot of revs when setting off to get the car to move with out chugging (or stalling sometimes!)may be the having to get used to a new car but i have never had this much trouble getting used to a car before, dont get me wrong when you are on the move it is a very nippy thing doesnt take much to get it moving.

I bought a Golf Varient in 2008. The Gearbox needed to be changed after just 20,000Km and thank God it was still covered.
My brother bought a Scirocco and his Gearbox was fried at about 20,000Km as well!!!!!

I don't think I will be buying VW anymore

I have the 1998 Golf S mk4 1.6. I have been looking to get a second hand g/box for over 3 month now. My Garage told me that this is a common problem and that the g/box are quite a nightmare to find. At first i did not believe them but now my car has been at the garage for over 3 months and i do not know what to do with it, Rang VW dealer and they said it will cost me about £1300. Only if i knew this, i wouldn't have got rid of my previous car to car a car that looks nice but cannot do what it was bought for in the first place.

Excellent little round around and i haven`t had any major problems. All MOT`s passed except for tyres- which was my own responsibility. Good on petrol. It`s taken me further a field to London and Leeds a number times and never caused problems. Fast and nippy for what it is. I would definately look to get another Golf in the future as they`re great cars and also keep their value.

Same issue with gearbox. $12,000 for one in Australia so I got a second hand one. I bought the car new for $26,000 and after 80,000kms the gearbox went, leaking oil, cracked bell housing and so on. I complained to VW and they would not even send me a letter just ignored it. It really will come back to bite them as I tell everyone not to buy a VW so far put of about 5 purchase. I spread the word stay away. Bad move VW. I sold it to get a Toyota as 300,000kms and no issues. I don't want to see a person ripped off as I was. I had to get another loan to get to work on a car just over 3 years old (just out of warranty) .

Greetings people i have had exactly the same problem with my Audi A3 1.6 Sport. I cant understand how a company like VW can get something so simple so wrong. I havent got a quote on getting it fixed but i know it is going to cost a bomb to get sorted. i do know Theres a company based in kent that sell a refurbished box with the bolts instead of the rivets so im exploring possibilities at the mo. i know if i can get it sorted it will run for ever and i dont really wanna part with the car as there damn good cars apart from this obvious problem.

“Hi! ”

★★★☆☆

written by on 01/10/2009

Hi!

I own a Seat Leon from 2004, manufactoring year 2003. I have never been happy with the way, the gearbox works on this car. The first 2 years everything was fine, but hereafter shifting gears between 1. and 2. started to become a struggle. Gearbox is fine at first, but after 20 miles, when the car has run warm, your are struggling with it. It feels as though you have to shove it in to gear, especially when shifting into 1. gear at a red light.

Now the other day running at 5 miles an hour, coming from a parking lot, a loud Bang shuts the enigne off (revit?). Someting came loose but i can start the engine. It starts to raddle from the left/front side of the car and sometimes a banging sound can be heard.

I talk to my mechanic and we agree that he schould check the clutch for maybe a broken clutch spring, as it sounded like coming from the gearbox / engine area. (what do i know??)

Well gearbox pulled off engine and there is no fault to the clutch!? The mechanic told me that there where nearly no oil in the box and it looked it had been leaking out at some point (when the revit broke?). I'm not gonna pay for the mechanic to open up the gearbox, to verify the fault. Just ordered the car repaired for £1400 (New gearbox not recon.) ...

Dont get a recon. gearbox ... they all have the same fault. Its not worth saving a few £, as it will break again!!

written by cmorrison07511 on 18/08/2009

We were recently left with virtually no brakes on our 2003 1.9 TDGTi Mk 4 Golf, that luckily did not cause a serious accident. On inspection we found the power steering pipe jubilee clips had eventually rubbed their way through the brake pipe exiting the brake master cylinder. Customer services at VW asked us to have the cause of damage confirmed at our local dealership, as they would look favourably at the repair costs if we were correct in our diagnosis. As it turned out the dealership owner said the pipe had been moved during a cam belt replacement (his opinion, certainly not ours), and VW did not accept any responsibility for what we pointed out as a design fault. We replaced the brake pipe ourselves (a very awkward job),and can confirm it would be virtually impossible for anyone to bend the power steering pipe onto the brake pipe, due to the limited space of movement and the fact the power steering pipe always returns to its original position when trying to move it ( try moving a springy pipe onto a solid object and expect it to stay there, impossible without tying it). We pointed out to VW, this serious safety issue created by their design fault, could easily be remedied by a small fixing bracket from the engine block on to the power steering pipe, thus ensuring a safe maintained distance between pipes. VW do not want to know.

5 months ago I upgtaded my 1.1 fiat punto (extremley reliable even if a terrible looking car) to a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 SE. It had 58k on the clock and so I immediantly changed the cam belt.
However, I have a screeching noise occasionaly upon starting the engin, which my local garage seems to think could be the starter motor, and also is alot lot slower than I thouight it woudl be. All websites I have been on say the toop speed is 117mph, but mine tops out at 105mph and that is at around 5200rpm! Somebody told me that my car sounds as though the exhaust is going to blow....

written by wikidzmon on 07/04/2009

We got a T-reg model of the Volkswagon Golf 1.6 SE recently and it had clocked 80k on the meter. Apart from the shift between 1st and 2nd gears being a little stiff it run very smoothly for other cars of that age still on the road. It handles like a dream, is very comfortable at pace and has plenty of space for a small family. I'd love to say the size of it makes it a great city car but seeing as i used up all my driving skills before i go to 'parking' i try to stick to the car parks but my sister assures me it is fine.

My 1999 T reg Volkswagen Golf 1.6se drives like a dream, super smooth gearbox, super excelleration, quiet, super comfy seats with lumber support and fab stereo, what more could I want. After reading the above reviews and judging by the amount of VW`s on the roads, these faults amaze me, or am I just one of the lucky ones ?

I have had 2 VW mk4s, my first one was manual and it was fantastic it drove brilliant until my clutch slipped (Bad driving) and after I replaced it my Gear box blew while I was driving it, with my second one automatic it seems to be that the gear box is not going into gear and really irritating me as I should be at work.
