“We went on a Sun Sail flotilla holiday (2002),...”

★★★★★

written by Rachael. on 17/03/2003

We went on a Sun Sail flotilla holiday (2002), starting at their base in Vounaki, Greece, travelling round the Greek islands, under the watchful eye of the lead boat. Each morning we were briefed by the Sun Sail skipper before setting off at our own pace using his advice on how to get to the next destination (line of sight for our level of experience). Most of us were novices, although we did have an experienced friend aboard. It is possible to take a boat out with only the Sun Sail training course under your belt. Those in the flotilla who had done this really enjoyed themselves at the end, but seemed to have more stress along the way, due to inexperience. The staff were brilliant, supporting us practically, mechanically and socially. You can choose to be as dependent or independent as you like, just make sure you're in port at the appointed time.
The weather was fab (early May) and the boat was incredible (brand new, second week out!). The sailing was amazing - it's definitely an activity holiday, although if you have more than two people aboard, there are times in the day when you can relax. We learnt so much. And remember, at the slightest hint of a problem, just down sails and turn on the engine (you pay for fuel). Although all mod cons were included on our boat(check the brochure for individual boat specifications), it is cramped living, so don't go with someone who will drive you crazy (or snores loudly). However, there's nothing quite like sleeping aboard, anchored in a deserted bay, with your cabin window open to the stars and the water lapping on the hull. After all the sailing, fresh air and sun, everyone sleeps like a baby. All food is locally bought (so bring things you can't do without from home) and most meals were in harbour restaurants - and were fabulous. Most nights we would ask the waiter to bring us a selection of the house specialities. We'd recommend this holiday to anyone with the slightest interest in sailing - everyone we have ever met who has done it would do it again (and with Sun Sail). Personally, boat wise, we wouldn't do without the heated water, electrically controlled anchor, in mast furling and wheel steering, but each to his own - so pick the boat which has what you need. And don't forget the CDs - you can play them as loud as you like in the middle of the sea! We should have taken the theme tune to the Onedin Line.

<br>That's a great review. We're going on the Sunsail Vounaki flotilla this October and your review's really helped me get an idea of what it'll be like.
