Now I'm no great fan of compilations, I think music fans should always buy albums to hear songs as they were intended. Then make your own compilations. But, sometimes, when you're just learning about a genre, it's nice to get an overview of things and find out which bands' albums you should purchase first. For people just getting into punk, post punk and new wave this is a pretty good place to begin. It's mostly hit singles that everyone will already know but they all work well together here bringing the slightly more unsual tracks to help ease you into them. From the pure, original punk energy of "White Riot" by The Clash and "Orgasm Addict" by the Buzzcocks to the new wave quirkiness of "Turning Japanese" by the Vapours, to the angular post punk art rock of "I Am the Fly" by Wire to the sheer joy of "Shot By Both Sides" by Magazine, this takes you on a nice jog through the best of the late-1970's British music scene.
Buy this for yourself if you're a youngster looking to fill yourself in on some musical history, or for your mum if you want her to put away her boring David Grey CDs. Either way, it's a treat.
