Rush, In Rio Review: To whomever suggested putting on a old pair of headphones and imagine you're right there in the middle of the crowd noise unable to hear the band properly, I say this: Why don't YOU imagine yourself amidst horrible seats with an inability to hear the band. The DVD is to show the visual amazing "oneness" of the crowd that night. We don't need to HEAR them wash the band out on CD too. It just doesn't work and is a major audio disappointment as a CD testament to the great… Read Full Review

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with your review. If you were to watch the DVD (disc 2 specifically), you would know that they were unable to do a sound check for this due to heavy rain. This is the major reason why you cannot hear the band. In addition, it is also important to realize that this is in Brazil, where the national language is Prtugese. When you watch the DVD, you see how many fans are there, and if you listen, you'll hear them all singing the exact lyrics to every song...in English. This is the magnitude of the show they put on in Rio. The sound qualitly on this CD is actually very good. RUSH music has awesome lyrics, but nothing overpowers the sheer intensity of the music. It may not be the 30th aniversary tour, but it is not far from it.

Okay, maybe I've got you wrong, but it seems to me that you want a studio recorded CD that sounds like a live CD with recorded crowds, etc.

Sounds like an awesome live experience...

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. I am not bothered by "crowd noise" when I am at a Rush concert because that ambience is something I am experiencing in a live setting. The music live is also washing over you live and is not hampered by inferior or problematic recording issues.
The fact that I don't do lawn seating and make sure that my seats afford me the best view and sound might factor into this disagreement.
I want the BEST possible experience I can get at a live show. I also want the best experience possible from my CDs.
I can hear the music, but I should not have to struggle to listen hard on a CD. It's just my preference to have a better mix, which Different Stages has.
This is no knock on Rush in any shape or form. It's just not a pleasureable live album for me.
The DVD sounds great, looks great and the crowd noise is a perfect complement because the mix is better and has the visual ambience to back it up.
On the CD,it just becomes a hindrance.
I am not the only person to feel this way. The general consensus on this CD is that the sound (through no fault of Rush) just isn't up to their live standards.
If you were at the show, that might make listening to this a different story. Otherwise, enjoy the crowd noise. I have RUSH bootlegs that sound better than this disc.

It is possible to hear the greatness of the band on the CD, don't let a sound difficulties get in the way. This is the best live recording of the band to date, and includes special aspects of a live performance that are exclusive to the CD. "Resist", for example, is nothing you can get form an earlier CD. RUSH continues to improve with every live performance. My first experience with RUSH was "All the World's a Stage", and, although it was a great recording, Rush in Rio tops it...by a great margin. Don't dismiss this CD for the crowd washing over the band between songs. The music can be heard perfectly over it, but maybe I only feel this way because I have the patience to focus on the MUSIC. If you are so distracted by the crowd, pay the Canadian power trio to give you a private live performance, so that you can hear the music without any "distractions".

You've missed the point completely. The DVD is awesome, the CD is not so awesome. The DVD is the best representation of this concert. I watched the DVD and know about the problems with the mix on the CD end of it. These problems don't manifest themselves on the DVD.
The CD is inferior in sound. You buy a CD for the sound, not to hear a band known for it's precision audio muddied by crowd noise.
It's just an inferior live release on CD. Different Stages is far superior if you're looking to LISTEN to the band live.
